I've spoken to people who have viewed their admission records or called the admissions office, and this is actually a thing. Of course, I don't know exactly how big of a thing it is, as there are many people in +X majors who have told me outright they have little to no interest in the +X portion of their major and just BSed on their application, but be aware they do look at your essays to make sure you have some interest in the +X side of things.

Technically you're enrolled in both colleges, not just the one. Ostensibly I'm labelled as being as in LAS, but I have access to all the resources in LAS and Grainger, which is quite nice. There are other reasons to want to do a CS + Xm ajor, too. Class requirements for the pure CS degree are notoriously stupid in many areas, with poorly taught classes like 361 that are required. On the other hand, CS + X majors have more lenient requirements that allow them to take better versions of a lot of these core classes

A ton of people apply for higher acceptance rates, very often with the intent to transfer immediately to a different, more "prestigious" major (often into a more desired CS + X major, which is a big thing with CS + Math and the like)

I think that's the best path, really. There are lots of people I talk to who "played the game" and chose an easy +X major, only to complain about how the +X classes are boring and how they don't want to do them. Compare that to people in a pure major who are enjoying the classes, it's just a much more pleasant experience

My roommate got in for CS + Astronomy since he wanted a higher acceptance rate than pure CS (basically all California students do this for some reason?) and he enjoyed the one astronomy class he took in high school, and now complains to me about his astronomy classes. I constantly talk to others in my major who don't really care about linguistics beyond ChatGPT.

Linguistics is a very broad field with different applications, but it's the scientific study of language (not languages, or any particular language). Instead of something like a German major where you learn the grammar and study the culture, linguistics is interesting with studying the universal properties across all human language, whether that be trying to understand the theorized Universal Grammar that biologically determines part of our understanding of language (assuming CHompsky is to be believed), studying how language is acquired different in children versus adults, creating methods for computers to interpret and analyze human language, or anything else
