grade deflation is not an official policy, and tbh what students often call grade deflation here i feel like is actually fair? like a class being curved to a B/B+ at the median seems normal?

the trend is towards becoming more generous, and classes that issue the full range of grades A-fail are usually introductory requirements whereas the more upper level you go the grades start becoming half A half B or mostly As.

i would say its not like harvard where the average grade is an A, but you should definitely be prepared for the possibility of getting your first imperfect grade lol

also the times where i felt like i was overworked were mainly adjusting to the diff type of workload in college in freshman year, and subsequently ahving horrible time management (i always start psets the day they're due and this habit still continues lol)

afaik if you want to get involved in research at either caltech or princeton its very easy for professors to take on undergrads, and caltech has SURF which most students do and at princeton the equivalent is OURSIP and various dept opportunities for funding. at both places i get the feeling that they'll throw money at undergrads to do research lol.

on top of this, princeton has additional structured requirements for students to complete comprehensive research projects during the semester in their sophomore and junior years (through what we call "junior papers" or junior theses), and ofc there is the senior thesis requirement

for both schools i get the vibe that in the natural sciences at least they're very academia-coded and primarily funnels a lot of students into graduate school or industry research

also think it's important as a STEM undergrad to be exposed to more opportunities and breadth of careers and activities beyond research, where princeton recruiting for undergrads is stronger in this case for stuff like finance or consulting or civil service or whatever, and the humanities.

i decided early on that i was going to do research and go into academia and thats what 90% of ppl in physics are doing, but i feel like almost everyone i know around me had a small change of heart of what they thought they wanted to do in freshman year or explored keeping other doors open
