#Duke University (2024-2025)
1 messages · Page 3 of 1
damnnnnn, this might seemed bias but i want to go to a small french town
like lyon
Ooh that sounds really cool
my bestie lives there and is the reason i started taking french
i can't believe it's been 6 years
Very similar culture
On my bucket list is to definitely study abroad in Europe, I wanna spend the weekends travelling to different countries and exploring the cultures and histories
and i've been through 4 diff french teachers.....
As Duke?
Jeez lol
i wrote my essay on being able to visit so many places but at no price
When I took french the conjugations killed me x_x
No as you described
Also I never really figured out feminine and masculine nouns so I had a 50/50 chance each time lol
Ooh
Yeah my mom's kinda competitive in that regard
one of my french teachers quit a couple years ago bc her ex fiance that she. met on twitter took her kids to "disney world" to hook up with another woman
Jeeezz
and also my school is on national news for sexual assault so i actually need to leave this place
i need to go FAR far away]
Wait he brought the kids while hooking up? x_x
wait that's legitimately crazy
Back in middle school we had a few scandals too, someone put cameras in the bathrooms and stole like 10 laptops
oh my gosh that's crazy
like bruh this is why my state has a republican governor now
idk wanna say too much though bc it'll be really easy to find my school lol
Lol yeah I feel like if someone compiled all my messages on this server they might be able to find my school too x_x
wait that reminds me
Okay
Like a few weeks ago
I was on the chance me reddit
Because I was bored and stressed
And someone at my school found it
And posted it all over the group chats
omg that place is so toxic
And it got spread to like half my grade x_x
found your posts?
wait i feel like i've found all the duke chance me
So if they know me then they know me
i will never post on there though LOL
Wait then you might have read mine LOL but I deleted it after a day or two when all my classmates started spreading it throughout the grade
Yeah probably a good idea, I was just crazy stressed that day
LOL then that was probably me
UX design majors are so rare
lowk don't listen to anyone there though
All I got was a bunch of my classmates trolling me x_x
they're not admissions officers and all applications are viewed holistically
LOL
Yeah definitely, chanceme is kinda crazy tbh
like my SAT is equivalent to a 33 ACT and I know plenty of people who got into duke with that score
Yeah if you are like that as well Berkeley would be a good fit
but on chance me id prob be an auto reject if i didn't share i was low income
Yeah, I've seen people saying that amazing posts are gonna get rejected
Nope that's not me at all lol
Chanceme is idiotic
the only thing ill say
My entire college list is comprised of schools that are the opposite of competitive
is i feel bad for aid seeking internationals
It’s just high schoolers telling other high schoolers they won’t get into college
Oh yeah definitely
my neighbor in india goes to duke
Sometimes I have to take a step back and realize how fortunate I am
i feel privaleged to even apply tbh
Yeah same
Yeah same all the intls at my school are rich asf
my dad had to drop out once his dad died
My roommate is from India and is stupid rich
to support his family
Aw that sucks
I'm lucky enough that I don't even have to worry about funds for undergrad
although i am not first gen, my mom's college degree here is useless
But I'm applying for robertson because that would help me pay for grad school since my parents aren't paying for that
cause she got it at a no name school in india
i want to go into renewable energy consulting
Wait that sounds cool
hopefully i dont need grad school for that
What major are you applying for?
well maybe an MBA
major is environmental sciences and policy, minors are econ and gender studies
Ooh that sounds really cool
people don't understand the climate clock is at 4 years!!!
If your mom isn’t using her degree some schools will still consider you first gen
I don't know about environmental science but I know Duke is top of the line of public policy
i don't want it to be 80 degrees in november LOL
wait what neither of my parents are using their degrees
well she's a concierge and until recently was unemployed
If I apply to Duke I’m gonna do EvAnth And Global Health double Major
Yeah like even though I love warm weather I don't want it to be that warm x_x
like omg i need snow
Ooh that sounds really cool too
I love the snow
Like if your parents got their degrees internationally some schools and that’s the case some schools have modified definitions of first gen
leo dicaprio i know you don't date women over 25 but your a slay for your envi sci advocacy
I'm happy because at Duke I get warm weather most of the year, then go home for the winter and see the snow, then go home in the summer to the nice Seattle weather
It’s very school dependent
Huh then I guess I'm first gen for some schools
Like I’m first gen at my school even though both my parents have college degrees
i feel like i major helps me stand out a little bit
bc everyone here is cs or pre med LOL
#asian parent core
my dad got concerned when i told him my major
Duke doesn’t gaf about your major iirc
but i told him to trust the process
well i'm sure they don't want a class full of 80% CS majors indicated on their common app
Sorry based on trinity or Pratt
well yeah that admit trinity or pratt based
SAME
My dad freaked out so much
but they do take your intended major into account
Yeah
i read my friend (ed admit last year) admissions file last week
Ah I see
Should have done marine bio then
maybe i think they want more envi sci kids because recently they have spent so much money investing in their envi sci offerings
like the marine bio lab, climate commitment, duke forest, sustainability green devils program
totally didn't drop this all in my supps 😌
Yeah, and they just became climate neutral this year which I think is great
Also can I just say the duke forest is so pretty
Like
When choosing colleges
I hated schools like NYU because they had no green spaces
It's refreshing to call a university that shares my commitment to environmental responsibility home.
straight from my why duke LOL
I NEED green spaces
Lol yeah
7060 acres of beauty
And it's the perfect mix of modern and gothic
Like the outside is so gothic and old and beautiful
exactly omg campus is so pretty
And the inside is so modern and nice
it's sad that i probably won't go there again unless i get accepted
I applied to UNC and even though I love them I feel like I would be so sad living so close to Duke
i am kinda jealous of all the mid private school kids who get duke ED
but it's alright
i am a nepo baby in another life
do you have higher stats than them?
All my other classmates called me crazy for applying ED because she's getting in
i feel like legacy is becoming less and less valued
Idk she's kinda secretive
And I don't know much about her
True but duke still considers it
Depends on the school
so many legacy kids got rejected last year from college confiedential thread
duke still heavily values it
but its not like auto accept
But Duke is literally perfect for me
California is trying to ban legacy rn lol
Yeah
It’s so funny
rip all the stanford legacy kids
pretty sure that's just for public unis though right?
maybe you would've been nepo babies 4 years ago
So many of my classmates are applying for stanford this year it's crazy
No for private as well
Oh huh I didn't know that
Ucs dont do legacy
It’s a new bill
my friend wanted to rea stanford but ended up ed to upenn m & t
It’s stupid
legacy admissions or banning it?
The bill
no more legacy admissions
Upenn M&T is so competitive
starting next year
I applied for M&TSI a few years ago and I got rejected ;-;
they took like 5 kids from my area last year lol
oh wow that's a lot
Because essentially what they’re doing is cutting off state funding to schools like usc if they don’t ban legacy (which usc obv won’t) and that just hurts the kids on finaid because the amount of finaid given is largely due to state funding
So they’re essentially making things worse
This guy at my school got into UChicago last year after lying on his apps x_x
Ooh
Ouch
so fabricated
Yeah honestly fin aid is more important than banning legacy imo
and then he's putting tiktoks about how his scholarships are helping him pay for college LOL
x_x
There’s always people like this
i wanna be a nepo baby
LOL same
theres prob plenty of people who lie and get into duke
Alas Chinese unis don't care about legacy and I wouldn't go back to china anyways
my biggest ec is like pretty easy to verify though LOL so im not worried
also if you search up my name everything is so easy to verify on google so im lowk chillinh; rip to all the flops who lie
Yeah all of my ECs are ridiculously easy to verify
but im gonna play it nice
Yeah honestly karma's gonna catch up to him eventually anyhow
Don’t dox people
omg bruh there's one kid with duke legacy at my school
and he has a higher gpa than me
but he was one of the kids who got his latin honors stripped for cheating
x_x
so rip flop 😌
A few kids got expelled from my school last year for cheating
Like repeatedly cheating not one time cheating
People cheat like crazy here
it makes me mad too because that's why there's so much grade inflation
They legit set it up in a way that makes it easy to cheat
when some kids actually work hard for their grades
and are bad test takers
(like moi)
Jeezz
lowk im not even bad i took the sat once and got a 1460 im just not rich enough to take it 8 times lolol
lowk i need to delete some of these messages
i dont wanna get doxxed
Lol yeah
1460 isn't even bad though
I feel like for me my ECs are the type where if you don't know me there's no way you can find me, but if you know me then it's obvious, which is how I got anti doxxed on the chance me post lol
. i explained in my additional info that bc of fam responsibilities i didn't have the proper time to dedicate studying for it and that i was able to retake it in november and update with my scores
Like a lot of my ECs are politics, and realistically how many UX design majors are there with politics extracurriculars lol
Oh yeah that's good
When I took the ACT I kept screwing up on one section even though on practice tests I could get 35-36 on all of them consistently
So I just gave up and superscored lol
guys how did my high school's football team go from state champions in freshman year to 2-8 this year
as a senior this is so embarassing
i mean superscoring is good
but our legendary coach retired this past spring
real
i am slowly deleting LOL
it's low the athletes bringing our average sat down
ill never forget how the starting qb my freshman year chucked a water bottle at me by accident and gave me a bruise
Jeezzz
wait also how did the email for the interview look like?
Hold up lemme copy paste
Thank you for applying to Duke University. My name is XXX, and I have been assigned to offer you an alumni interview. This year I'll be conducting interviews virtually or by phone. The interview will last 30-45 minutes. In accordance with Duke policy, recording any audio or video of our interview or conversation is prohibited.
As a reminder, the interview is not a mandatory part of your Duke application. However, it is an opportunity for Duke to learn more about you and for you to learn more about Duke.
If you are interested, interview summaries for early decision must be submitted by the end of the day on 11/25/2024. I'm looking to schedule between 11/18 - 11/22. If you are interested, could you please send me some dates and times that would work for you?
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
I stalked her social media so much x_x
She's a public policy major at duke which is cool cause I have so many politics extracurriculars
I'm actually so excited for the interview lol
Nervous but excited
I usually do well in interviews
Not in asynchronous interviews though as I learned the hard way through the robertson app x_x
I don't think so, why?
it says ed interview report need to be submitted by the end of the day on 11/25
makes sense my friends first read last year was 11/2;
11/24
second read was 12/08
that's crazy cause that means they might've already read mine x_x
If I get accepted I'm definitely reading over my report
i’m getting nervous bc someone on CC said they submitted on 11/04 and alrdy got an interview
i meant 11/24
I think it really depends on the area where they are
Ah lol
i think committee read happen on the last day
last week
my bad
her only comments are from her first reader
Ah makes sense
and the committee read
they mentioned the summer program we did together too
bc she listed it as an ec
and they talked abt how many ecs were related to her major
and said her why duke was more convincing than other applicants
bye!!!
Anyways nice talk, cya!
For anyone still missing their portal I applied November 4th and just got mine this morning.
Got mine too!
guys I'm so cooked
I spent the last 2 hours doing college related stuff
Like watching college decision reaction videos
Reading over my supps
Reading college results posts
Etc
Oh my gosh the wait is killing me
Also fun fact apparently the supps that I wrote weren't as bad as I remembered
Even the supps for 4 schools that I wrote in 2 days LOL
So that was a pleasant surprise
i’m just waiting for my sat scores to come out friday LOLOL
for anyone who hasnt gotten their portal you can actually just do a password reset with your email and you can access it
majority of the time your portal is already setup, it just takes awhile for the email to be sent
I'm so cooked I had two dreams about Duke last night x_x
The first one the decisions came out a month early for some reason and I got deferred and I felt so numb
The second one featured this guy I met who's also applying to Duke ED this year and was super passive aggressive and toxic and competitive and he was like that in the dream too, and in the dream it was the day before decisions and he was like "Yeah I'm getting in and you're not" and overall just being mean
I'm thinking about colleges too much someone help
yall harvard is releasing rea decisions on december 12, so i think duke comes out that day too
i saw someone’s likely letter on tiktok
Getting a likely letter is crazy
Ahhh only a month away
interesting since yale's is dec 17, youd think harvard and yale would be on the same day
have they confirmed december 17? it’s usually never that late
yes
on the yale portal
does it say “by december 17”
not what i was shown
cause dukes says “by december 15”
but obv it could come out earlier
and they usually always release on thursdays
it was dec 12 last year too i think?
last year was thursday december 14
We had Wednesday the 15th in 2021 btw
Only the last two years were Thursday
ohh that makes sense
well if they’re continuing the thursday trend it should be either the 12th or 19th
Wednesday for 2020 too
What are this girl’s credentials tho I will ask
Like why did she get early
I didn't know exactly what date but it's definitely around then
It shouldn't be 19th because it says out be the 15th
It's usually around the second week of December though
So if I had to bet on a date then I would guess the 12th
wait I saw this tiktok too. I didnt know recruited athletes get likely letters
Has anyone not gotten an interview yet? I'm getting a bit nervous because i live in competitive suburban area with plenty of Duke ED kids. I submitted november 4th.
I would give it some time
It took me like 2 weeks to get my interview request
Actually that's a lie I just checked
It took me over a week though
So yeah I would give it another week or so
When’s the latest i can expect to get an invite? It’s looking pretty gloom rn lol im not sure if ill get one. I regret submitting it so late now ugh
got a 1490!! is this something that i should submit since it’s still below the 50th percent
I think most ED applicants will get interviewed
Maybe give it one more week and if still nothing then email?
Congrats! Yes I would definitely submit
1490 is a good score and if you don't submit they'll assume you got something lower
scores already came out for november???
ya didnt it come out last friday
or idk
i heard people at my school talking about it
no it’s supposed to come out tomm morning
r u sure?
prob
but last friday hella juniors were talking about sat stuff
probably just anticipating their scores lol
nah
they got their scores back
it might have been school day or something im not sure
sat school day but i also took the november one so we will see
idt late submission affects it
i submitted nov 3rd and got interview before someone in the same area who submitted 2 weeks earlier
I think its all about availably esp with a interviewer who was a similar major
I think they try to match majors because I had diff interviewers than 2 other ppl from my school
and our interviewers matched our majors so I just made the assumption
im not rlly sure
you’re probably right then
i applied envi sci and policy and not a lot of people from this area do
it’s usually pre med, cs, and econ
ya idk i wouldnt stress too much its out of ur control
do you feel like you did better on the november day?
i feel like i did better on the english portion so hopefully my superscore is decent
oh you’ll be fine then
i have no idea how i did but atp i don’t really care anymore
like what’s done is done
true! i have no idea if i would’ve benefitted going test optional but i alrdy submitted so oh welllll
wait yeah I think I heard one of my classmates saying that
Yeah probably
Yep
you were environmental science and policy right?
I think it's maybe a bit less niche than me since I'll likely be going through program II
But yeah still comparatively a niche major
But I don't think that's a bad thing
My interviewer is a public policy major but I have a lot of politics extracurriculars, not sure if that was a coincidence or if she was matched with me intentionally cause of that
yeah
Duke cares about test scores a lot
So yeah unless you have an actually low score then definitely submit
And when I say actually low I mean a 1200 or something
Which is still above the national average
But low for duke
I'm not sure if that's true considering they're not quantifying them anymore. Plus around a third of the ED class last year got in TO which is still a lot
35% admitted ed last year to is a lot compared to the 28% overall with ED + RD
essay arent quantified and they are still really important. just because they arent quanitifed doesnt mean they dont have weight u just dont know their weight
I think it’s showing they’re going towards a more holistic review. Also essays are def still as important for context but not quantified bc chat gpt can craft a “great” essay with tweaks
It means they are going towards a more subjective review
if anything essays and test scores could be weighted even more it just all depends on the context
and it could vary depending on the applicant
true. someone who goes there said the new non quantifying for test scores is to help urm's but idk
how would what someone who goes to duke know about how their admissions office works lol
idk its that really annoying guy on reddit
under every chance me post
he said i shouldn't submit anything below the 25% percentile
idk but just bc he goes to duke doesnt mean anything
yeah i think hes letting his experience with admissions factor into what hes telling people
but that isn't helpful because everyones application is reviewed differently with different contexts
they did for ed
idk if thats true or not
test scores can be ap no?
i think ap factors into academics
according to her file
well actually idk
they did mention her ap scores though idk if they're taken into consideration for a certain category
also btw some guy read his admissions file on youtube last week and they def did rate test scores for ed
because he said he got a 4
True but the acceptance rate for TO people is lower compared to those who submitted scores, but that could definitely also be correlation not causation
Yeah definitely
Yeah in terms of writing style but people should still write their own essays otherwise it won't convey any personality and will just be generic
That makes sense tbh, even if they don't have experience with the admissions office
Either way test scores provide good context and "optional" stuff often isn't truly optional
So yeah if you have a good score definitely submit
YOOOOOO NICEEEE
Thanks you!!
I was freaking out all night but updating my score this morning from a 1460 to a 1510 felt so nice 🙂
Congrats!!!
Okay now definitely submit lol
1510 is a great score
🔥🔥🔥
definitely submit
btw for anyone who applied for financial aid
my css profile just now shows as recieved
i submitted it around 2 weeks before the november 1st deadline so dw if urs hasn't updated yet
Talk about Duke specific things
I would recommend you do both optional supps
The supps are all really a "why us" which is basically a "why is Duke a good fit for you"
And show personality
Not much else tbh
i agree. the optional supps aren't really specific to duke and the why duke is p much the standard why college so make sure you do ur research and ull be set. Try to write is so they're envisioning you on campus and what you'll bring
Also i still haven't gotten an interview i think i am officially moved to cooked status
Try emailing them maybe?
On Monday
idt its dependent on ur application
Or I guess email now and they'll reply on Monday
so i wouldnt worry
Yeah
It's always nice to have an interview though
if u didnt get one idk if u emailing is gonna get u one
but I don't think duke weighs it heavily
but ig u can try
Imo there's no harm in trying
ye the worst they can say is no
the last day for interviews are 11/25
alumni reports are due that day I think
oh wait
Then yeah @quartz bridge definitely email
It's just based off availability not your app but still no harm in emailing
I really hope we all get in
that way I'll know some people before moving in on campus lol
yeah i think im gonna email them monday or tuesday and ask if all interview invites have been sent already
I think i put myself in a good position now because I improved my SAT atp all i can do is wait because i've done everything i can on my part
I would email now because they won't respond on the weekends so they'll likely be able to reply on Monday
Yeah
Yeah
Should be 11:59 EST because it's in NC
And it's 1:35 EST rn
I mean the deadline already passed
But they give you a prompt
On video
So make sure you have your sound on and the environment is quiet
And you get a minute to think
Then you record
No rerecording
where does it say that?
If I were you I would finish that essay and do the interviews ASAP, and email robertson and see if they can extend the deadline
Especially since it's not too long after the deadline
So they might feel generous and let you still submit
Gl!
Email them ASAP explaining your situation and asking if you can still submit
Wait give me 5 min
Wait
Yeah I think you might be good lol
I had no idea that was the account creation deadline
The website is so unclear x_x
Congrats!
I would still email them just in case though
omgggg
did you rd???
isn’t robertson like a seperate application
wowwww
my anxiety could never
Same x_x
My interviews were terrible
Yeah
I've given up on all my other apps legitimately x_x
So if I get rejected ED I'm screwed lol
I've given up hope on Robertson's too cause of the interviews x_x
I submitted Robertson by the Oct 15 deadline so that's coming out same time as Duke x_x
Well you’ll have some time before rd so you’ll be motivated if it doesn’t work out
LOL yep that's the hope
for the first essay do i need to make it narrative or more direct
if ur talking about why us
Ye
I think my process was a short paragraph thats narative/ personal talking about what i hope to gain from duke
for me it was I would learn stuff at duke which would solve a goal of mine
and rest should be direct you should refrence speciic things and what they would teach u
that would help ur goal
that was my process
Im the opposite of a creative writer tho and ive seen essays that are very narative based but
hmmmmm
schools have started to come out with ed application this year
yale had a 14% decrease prob because of their new testing policy
and Northwestern had a 10% increase
i wonder what duke will end up looking like
Yeah same
Mine was split into a few paragraphs:
Hook/intro
Two paragraphs about academics
One about student life
Conclusion
I don't think it should be different from last year, probably a slight decrease in acceptance rate but that's normal
Because Duke doesn't have anything really new this year
Maybe a few more applications as the Carolina promise becomes more established
I wonder if some kids were put off applying to ED because of the Acceptance rate last year. But I don't think that will be the case. I agree that the NC + SC applications will probably increase, but they can only take so many from there.
I think that does happen, with one year's ED being lower and the next being higher
But if I had to bet I would say that the rate is going to go down
was ur hook related to ur major or jus smt interesting
A few weeks ago I posted a chance me where my classmates found me and posted it in the school group chat and according to a classmate it scared some people off from applying to Duke ED LOL
So I'm eliminating the competition for us 🙏
Major related
Because I'm going for Program II
So it's kinda unique
period girllll
omg ive been scaring people off atc too
i also feel like if ur unhooked with lower stats (like test scores or you go TO) ur ed chance is gonna be low. Like last yr i think duke said only 4500 out of the 6200+ were qualified or something
Yeah stats are extremely important
i wonder when prereads start
my friends app was preread by her AO on 11/23 last year and then her first read was the day after
her second read was 12/06 so interesting it was almost 2 weeks after
Yeah so they're probably reading our apps now
Also honestly if they get scared off then they didn't like Duke that much in the first place anyways
But either way less competition for us lol
there was a random kid on the duke subreddit admissions mega thread that randomly decided to apply ed 2 days before the deadline LOL
That is not a good decision lol
So uh good luck to them on the why us essays
I'm going rd, hope the luck still comes
Sry better question, do u think a hook should be major related?
Cuz then the essay is kinda a combo why major why school
Not necessarily
Do whatever works for you
Why the major at the school
Not why major
My major is unique so that's why I mentioned it in my hook
But most importantly why does the school fit you
lol
i got that email and thought it was my interview request ughhhhhh
dont come to duke the frats dont know how to throw shit
mb withdrawing my application now 😕
is it bad if 1 or maybe 2 other people are applying duke ed1 at my school? one of them I know for sure might be slightly better than me. im really starting to doubt myself rn 😭
I have a classmate with 4x legacy applying and I'm still going for it lol
I mean the facts are that people from ur school are the people ur gonna be compared with. That being said two qualified people can also get in it’s not only one alllowed
from my friend's school only 1 person got in ED but like 4 other kids got in through deferral
ur chilling trust
U can’t do anything about it so shoot ur shot I say
💯
even if their stats are better your essays could be better or the school could need someone more like u than them
even if they also are applying it doesn’t mean they’re gonna get in over u
ur right. when you put it like this, it definitely helps me feel a bit better about my chances lol
yea i should definitely not be complaining lol
my hunch is that they start doing prereads this week but idk for sure, esp since rec letters and other late stuff are due tomorrow
how do you know when they do prereads?
and when do they start actually reading them?
like after prereads
yeah prereads before the app gets a first read by an AO
i read my friends admission file from last year her app got preread on 11/23 and her first read was 11/24
I wouldn't be surprised if they started pre reads earlier tbh
Dw you'll be fine
You miss 100% of shots you don't take
What are you going to do about them applying? Nothing so don’t even think about it
i am too scared to email duke about interviews because i dont want them to think im annoying
but i also wonder if anyone has ever gotten in ed without an interview
I might be cooked
no don't be scared
that's their job, to answer emails
At this point in time I would definitely email
Probably, interviews are based off availability after all
ok i emailed
i think i was pretty polite with it and this was my first time emailing them
Yeah that's good
ok this is what they said: Alumni interviews are an optional component of the Duke application process. Due to the volume of applications to Duke, we regret we are unable to interview all applicants. The Admissions Office will prioritize interviews for students for whom we need additional information. Not being offered an interview does not affect your chances of admission. After students submit their applications, those offered an interview will be matched with alumni volunteers who will contact them via phone or email to arrange a virtual interview. Students may expect the interview to last 30-60 minutes. We do not offer on-campus interviews with admissions officers, nor can students request an interview.
i feel like this is an automated response because i heard from numerous people they try to interview everyone for early decision but idk anymoreeeeee
Okay yeah that's definitely automated
Maybe try calling?
Plus a Duke AO said that interviews were based off availability, she didn't say anything about only interviewing people who they need more info about
what duke Ao said that?
i think the more info part is only for regular decision applicants
im scared to call them
i feel like the automated response was a message to not ask again LOL
HELP i was right i lit found the same exact message copy and paste from their webstie
it lit didn't answer my question either i asked when the last day was to be contacted for ED interviews
@craggy wren do you know anyone who got into duke ed class of 2028 without an interview??
yes
one that came to my city + my school, she said that for ED specifically
nah it's automated
I say call them
so ur saying it's possible i can get in without an interview through the early decision round. Is this a sign that there a ton of more applicants this year if I can't get an interview and I'm from the DMV
Not necessarily
I talked to an alumni interviewer when I was prepping for my interview and he mentioned they are selected not necessarily availability
he did interviews 2-3 years ago tho so it might have changed
some ppl got interviews like 2 days after they submitted apps tho so i don’t think they acc reviewed the app in that time
I mean it could be selected based on area and stuff
need more information is pretty broad
wait the need more information is just for regular decision
how u know that lol
i spoke to an alum interviewer for duke this yr and they're trying to interview everyone for ed, which is why im concerned
idk if it is or isnt
like i spoke to them today
maybe
i think that if u dont get an interview now ur not gonna get one
and they claim it doesnt affect ur chances
so just let it go unless u wanna go call them
and then interviews end in 7 days so idt u would even get one
yeah im not calling them, ik someone got one 11/22 last year but im not holding out any hope lol
the date the reports are due are 11/25
if u havent been contacted yet I think any notice would be way too last min
yeah the person said they had to hurry they were due 11/27 last yr so idkkkkk
I'm pretty confident not having an interview wont hurt ur application
but having a good one will boost it
not much u can do tho
true, i do have an extra letter of rec from an alum so hopefully it makes up for not having an interview
if it makes u feel better I heard most people get 3's
from alumni interviewer I talked to
yikes, i def wouldnt want it to hurt my app
oh alr
lmk how it goes and good luck lol
duke 29 in ur name is such a power move
ye honestly the main things is to show u care alot about school
obviouslly talk about ur ecs personality and dont give red flags but I think showing ur obessed about the school is key
yeah imma try n go over my essay and memorize a buncha stuff abt the school
heard duke interviews are just chill convos for a lot of people
yea but they are rated 1-5
or similar way
so its still an interview for the most part
more than other colleges
yeah
thanks you too
did u get ur invite today?
today, i think most people in my area got theirs today
oh wow
yeah prob takes time to set up by region
wait what region
I'm bay area
houston ish
cause lowkey i feel like people from here have alrdy gotten interviews
wya
could be there's no alumni near you
i mean im majoring in chem and the person they gave me was politics? i believe
^^ yea
I got econ as econ but its not matched i guess
oh dang thats nice ru planning on talking about major
i stalked their linkedin but idk if i should bring up anything from there
about politics?
interview is like 2% idt it does anything
since she was into econ and entrepreneurship as well
wait did u get your request like in the morning?
yeah
did she mention it to you or did you look up her info
yikess i lit just updated my sat scores friday so maybe they looked at my app at first and decided im not worth interviewing LOL
looked her up
honestly idt so now that u mentioned people got interviews
before they got their portal
trust me i do NOT have a high sat
how r u gonna bring it up in the convo lol i feel like it's really awkward to basically admit you've been stalking them
i just find it hard to believe they ran out of interviewers in nova like that just doesnt make sense to me
what did u study? -> oh did u do any certifactes ?
or there could just be a butload of kids applying from this region who knows
uhm i guess make it come naturally
smart smart
like ask them about how they appleid their interests at duke
i would assume they introduce themselves tho
like hi im a ___ major graduated x years ago
maybe they haven't gotten instructions from duke yet to do interviews
and what specific things duke offered them for their interests that they believe were beneficial
see i would believe that but we have like tjhsst in this area
like there are so many kids prob applying they can't leave it this late
then prob they have their hands full for now lol
Yeah
Yep that's what I heard too
I literally got my interview reminder just now and I'm in the middle of a play rehearsal x_x
I guess that's my reminder to always put my phone on silent lol
whens ur interview?
u haven't had urs yet??
can you get your admissions file even if you don't get into the school
oh okay
Thursday
No
Yeah
I would not ask again
Not getting an interview doesn’t mean anything
There’s no need to bog down their office even more when there’s people who have real issues like financial aid related and what not
My interviewer said the same thing last year
But it was for rd
Ummm I think it depends on the interviewer 😭 I wouldn’t say you should seem obsessed, just that you really like the school
sorry idk if obsessed is the right word but I think showing u researched alot and know specifically why its a good fit for you - outside of it being a t10
is a better way to phrase it
Yeah fs
I would say also just be normal and yourself
Also ultimately your interview can help but only to some extent
My Penn interviewer said I was the best person he’d ever interviewed and I still got rejected lol
Meanwhile my Duke interview made me start hating Duke and I got wl
They don’t always try to match you w your major
I got a French alumnus interviewer and i applied as a bio major
Please don’t 🙏 if it comes up naturally that’s fine but don’t mention “hey I saw you did x y and z”
yea all that stuff about them came up naturally during our dicussion anyway, theres really no point in bringing it up
lol yeah dw
how was your interview?
amazing. had it about 2-3 weeks ago and the interviewer said he was super impressed with me
obivously he could just be saying that, but he sounded very genuine. the entire thing just felt like a conversation
i spent days before trying to think of the answer to every possible question when it really wasnt that deep.
just make sure you have the basics down of why duke and what you want in a college. after those first initial questions it kinda just went from me asking a question to him asking questions
thanks for the advice!
ofc 😁
could you elaborate on what you meant by it isnt that deep lol
Like dont overthink it too much. I literally spent the week before writing down a million answers to questions I wasnt even asked, just to be "prepared."
were there any questions you weren't expecting
Actually no. The questions I was asked were:
-Tell me about some of the things you do outside of school. (Extracurriculars)
-What do you want in a college?
-Why Duke
-Then he asked more questions about the things I wanted in a college and things that I mentioned about duke and why I wanted that
After that everything was just me asking questions about his time there and his career etc. It was honestly very nice speaking with him, I learned alot about the school
Also make sure you have questions to ask them
Ofccc. obviously every interviewer is different and will ask different things, but thats the general idea! If you have an interview soon, good luck!!
thanks!
dang u got urs really early then
i regret not applying earlier maybe i would’ve gotten an interview
i applied on the day of deadline
idrt u should lose sleep over it ong
me too😭😭
yeah i’m trying not to but it’s hard when it feels like everybody has an interview but me
honestly it's just less stress for you lol interviews dont rlly make an impact on your application anyways
my blood pressure definitely rose today and it's not going down
if i get accepted in december i will be the most shocked human alive and probably pass away from cardiac arrest LMAO
ur prob right i can't imagine how i would feel atp if i somehow got an interview so im going to stop thinking about it
just manifest by putting duke in your bio and everywhere else
yeah no i can't jinx myself lol
i got a hoodie but i told myself i can't wear it unless i get accepted
so it's just sitting wrapped in my closet
😭 😭
wait what happened
nah trust it's still in the amazon package
i can't see it
doesnt duke say that if you arent offered an interview it wont affect ur chances of admission
yeah
but still it's a little weird bc i don't live in a rural area or anything
and for ed i think its based on availability
i have this intense fear that i got an alum but they accidentally mistyped my email address or something
and they'll think i just never reached back
How long was your interview?
i think 35-40 minutes. not too long
I run a merch shop at school and I'm planning on designing a cute sweatshirt for myself if I get accepted
I'm honestly kinda sad Duke doesn't do in person, longer interviews
I feel like I would enjoy it more and it might reflect on me a bit better
But I'm gonna make the most of mine
def
duke food is too expensive
i want a job
to buy gsoy
i want infinite salmon poke bowls
those who get it get it
5 dolalr kraft chicken tender wrap on top
fuck snu
rugby players r my idols
marketplace brownies slapped tday
someone stole my cafe mobile order
fuck snu
ong bro
rotting in trin caf rn
krafthouse slapped today
L c1 had me waiting in the cold
trin caf brownies > marketplace brownies
Students who submit their Common Application by the Early Decision deadline (November 1) or the Regular Decision priority interview deadline (December 20) will be contacted by alumni on a first-come, first-served basis. While Duke makes every effort to interview all applicants who submit applications by these deadlines, interviews are not guaranteed.
@quartz bridge
You'll be fine
Don't worry
This lines up with what my regional AO told me
Though that says otherwise
If you want, during my interview on Thursday I can ask my interviewer to see if I can get any more info for you to help relieve some anxiety
"The Admissions Office prioritizes interviews for those applicants where additional context is helpful, but rest assured—not receiving an interview will not affect your chances of admission."
But the AO said that they try their best to interview all ED applicants based on availability
Either way you'll be fine dw
ok thanks!
someone on college confidential also said they received their invite yesterday. and the interviewer included dates for next week so now im not sure if 11/25 is the universal report deadline for all interviewers
my alum rec just emailed admissions his rec today so even if i dont get an interview at least i have an extra piece of info they can now look at
take a deep breath ✨
and chill
anxiety won't change anything.
just relax
ik someone, not Duke, who got his Harvard interview the week before decisions came out
so just trust your app and believe it is good enough to get you in
it's never over until it's over.
love this thanks 🙏
i never got an interview request so i think it doesn't matter too much
were you rd tho? i think for ed everyone gets one…
i was rd
rip someone got an interview today in the college app question thread and it said in the email is was a late assignment
i guess if i haven’t gotten one now it’s too late but oh well dartmouth here i come 😍😍
Dw it doesn’t mean anything
Love Dartmouth though
Both are amazing schools
The interviews are on a volunteer basis by alumni, I got reached out to saying they needed more people to help, so it's also just possible that they don't have enough interviewers for everyone.
I got into Duke without an interview, and I know people who get interviews that don't get in.
Most interviewers only get to know you for a few minutes so what they have to say (which is always generally very positive) isn't going to have a significant sway on your admissions decision.
ohhhh ok thank you! I'm now under the impresison they just simply ran out so i'm feeling better
do you remember when they reached out to you?
Uhhh I don't remember but I want to say a few weeks ago?
I just finished my interview
the questions were pretty simple 1) tell me about urself 2) greatest acomplishment 3) greatest challenge 4) what do u like about school 4) why duke
the only kinda negative part ig was the length
it was on zoom so it was cut short at 40 min
I had more to say but ig i would have felt that way regardless even if it was 1 hour so maybe its chill
ohh ok, thank you! this is prob bad for us bc this means they prob got more applicants than anticipated LOL
No, they run out every year. It's also based on how many are in your given area and/or how many people choose to volunteer. So # of interviews isn't inherently reflective of # of applicants, less alumni could have signed up this year
kk i submitted 4 letters of rec and i read somewhere that interviews are factored into the rec rating so hopefully they don’t need anymore info
Yeah you should be more than fine. Most interviewers also just reinforce what's already written in your app anyways if your app was comprehensive when you sent it in.
ok! I'm from the DMV region so it's a little head scratching that they ran out of interviews here, but i guess people don't wanna interview here anymore lol
Apparently the next 3 days is going to be the biggest storm in my area in 20 years x_x
And my power is already going out
And my interview is on Thursday
RIP me
And I've been practicing so hard for my school play too ;-;
And the performances were supposed to be on Thursday Friday Saturday
I really hope the power comes back on tomorrow
RIP me lol
could you do it on your phone with cellular data?
good luckk!!!
Probably but it's not ideal
Yeah if my power isn't back by tomorrow evening then I'm gonna email
She also lives in the area so she'll understand
Ughhhh a second cyclone is projected to come in another few days
I emailed my interviewer
I talked to someone in my area who got in duke ed last year and he also said he didn't get an interview so i'm finally chilling 😭🥳
dartmouth's app is so funnnnn
have you guys already been hit with the storm?
did they close school for you guys?
Nice lol
Yep
Also yep
Power isn't projected to come back on for days
ru from seattle
now i feel bad for complaining about udub portal taking so long
Yeah
LOL
Yeah I'm lucky that the storm hasn't caused any actual damage, I know some couldn't say the same
A tree and a downed power line missed my house by only like a feet or two though
what gets sent back to duke after the intereview? had mine 2-3 weeks ago and I was just curious how much and what parts of the interview get sent back to duke
ay its still possible to get one so who knows
also have the AOs started to make decisions on applications? like could I possibly be accpeted or denied as of rn?
i think first reads/prereads are going on rn
second reads and committee sessions don't happen until early December i think
GUYS
i got my interviewer
no cause why did he email me at 1 am EST LOL
thank god at least i won't have the what if's anymore
OMG he works at the Nicholas school wow
he's not from my area prob why it took so long
finally, now we can all rest 😂😭
Congratulations by the way.
Hoping you get in.
You are clearly obsessed with Duke
you and @pallid fern
idt I can be so obsessed 😭😂
i wouldn't say im obsessed, guilty confessio but Yale's always been my dream school. But Duke i decided I wanted to ed here in September and now that we're getting closer to decision date my nerves are wracking up which is probably why I'm on here too much 😭
I def won't be upset if I get rejected tho everything happens for a reason
i have an amazing state school that has a world class business program so I'm extremely grateful
Ayyyeeee congrats
LOL I was literally planning on asking my interviewer tomorrow about how interviews are assigned for you
I'm gonna go to my dad's workplace because it has power there to do the interview
Yep I'm obsessed lol
Why'd you ED here if Yale is your dream school then? Just curious
That's really good
I love my state school but I've known that I wanted to ED Duke since the end of my sophomore year and confirmed it junior year
I will cry if I get rejected lol
I’m not competitive for Yale sadly and also duke is closer to home
HYPSM is just a different level tbh
also i hate the idea of REA and wanted to ed somewhere to boost my chances
that's good 😊
well then, we just have to pray you don't get rejected 😭
confirmed 👌🏻
REA really doesn't boost chances
That's fair
I like Yale but I know for a fact that I would be happier at Duke
I know it's cliche but I really did feel at home when I visited
Yep lol
It does by a tiny bit but that could also be from legacy + athletes, but either way the boost is minimal compared to ED
Honestly you should go for Yale RD if you get rejected/deferred from Duke
There's no harm in trying, and there are always cases of people getting rejected from a bunch of schools before ultimately getting accepted at a crazy good uni
yeahhhh
have you read this book by Jeffrey Selingo
Who gets in and Why.
He was explaining that sometimes the policies vary from year to year
a school might decide to pick more legacies in ED or more athletes.
they can also decide that they want to pick more low income.
let's just say admission process is a bizarre one
you really can't pinpoint what got in you and whatnot.
there are too many variables in the equation of admitting a student 😂😭
but yeah, irregardless, the ED boost is very significant compared to REA.
although one might consider the fact that schools offering REA are already madly competitive and very difficult to get in.
If they offered ED, it might not have much of a boost
i didnt know duke interviews were competitive... i got mine like really soon...
I haven't read the book but that makes sense
Not for ED it isn't based on my understanding
Dw you'll be okay
ahh okay
youll be okay
2 MORE HOURS UNTIL MY INTERVIEW
It's a general write-up of the interviewers notes and maybe some answers to a few questions I don't exactly know all the details since I myself haven't done it before
GOOD LUCK!! 🙏
someone told me duke got 500 more ED applications this year. AR will probably be less than 12% and that's with QB and recruited athletes...
Okay so I just finished my interview and here were some questions she asked:
Why Duke
What's your favorite part about your school, and what's something you would change
How would you spend an ideal day
Any extracurriculars ideas in college?
From there it was mostly just based on my responses to her questions
She was super friendly though
She said what happens is that she'll write up a quick summary and send it to Duke, and she gets notified whether or not I get in
nope didn't prepare at all
oh wow
I spent like 5 minutes thinking about how to answer "what's your greatest challenge/accomplishment" because that's a common question but it didn't come up
But that's it lol
I think it went well
She said I have a very contagious sort of energy/enthusiasm
Hopefully, we spent some time just chatting about the power outages here
And overall it felt super chill
I didn't get a sense of "omg it was an amazing interview best interview ever" but more like "it was good but nothing extraordinary"
that's probably a better feelin than i'll have 😭
Dw honestly interviews don't matter that much
