1. just clearing up that usc is not strictly in dtla, but it is still kinda close nevertheless to places like skid row compton etc
2. there are lights everywhere + yellow jackets (basically usc police) in the hotspots like the row
3. in general mind your own business and try not to go anywhere alone at night, carry pepper spray or something if you really feel like you need it and you'll be ok

which is a big plus bc it can be a lot to deal with when you have a lot of suitemates like parkside residents tend to

parkside is really popular but i dont know anyone who didnt get in there, i was originally assigned to parkside A+H even though i did not request it at all on the housing app lol

i was able to apply for reassignment and i got into webb which imo is the best freshman dorm possible next to cale + irani and cardinal gardens, the only downsides to these three are that since theyre apartments you have to clean your bathrooms and they're much harder to get into as a freshman bc theyre also open to upperclassmen

its worth noting that mccarthy is also by far the most expensive freshman dorm

Also, a warning about New/North. Because it is full of predominantly White students who are interested in Greek Life, it can create a somewhat hostile environment for students of color. I have friends who were victims of racist transgressions at New/North and switched to different dorms as a result. It is just a warning that the version of "social" advertised at New/North is not safe or welcome for everyone. I would be scared to live in that dorm as a student of color or a queer student. It has vibes of an idealized "Whites-only" space that people who romanticize history would be attracted to, but USC is so much more diverse and open than it used to be and it's important to expand your horizons and get to know people who aren't exactly like you.

and the biggest motivating factor for EA is that its not restrictive and at usc its the only way to be eligible for scholarships

Probably the students who'd benefit most are fgli (who already have tuition waved and a decent chunk of aid for COL already), and the full pay students

If ED had the same deadline and announcement time as EA, just higher consideration odds and a binding agreement, it feels a bit like a win-win
