My guess is that colleges start by checking if ur academically qualified or in range. Then they determine what kind of stuff you will be doing on campus either through what you’ve stated in your essays or extracurriculars

If you have particularly interesting extracuroculars, then it could effect their view of how qualified you are/what you bring

Once all that is figured out, your essays will determine what type of person you actually are and if you are a match with the college. This will ideally differentiate you from others seeking to do the same stuff
