I feel like freshman year I ate at least one free dinner a week from a club or sm and then at least two off campus, and I rarely ate dining hall breakfast

parent contribution for Brown is only $26,100, with me needing to pay out $2,700 as student responsibility and another $2,950 for work study (so 31K total family contribution)

for a school taht claims to be undergrad focused

it's woefully not so in the math dept at least

it's actually worse than some state schools or comparably massive ones

the curriculum is genuinely whatever

if you want to do applied math because you lvoe applied math

do pure math and then do grad applied math courses

applied math courses here are like. operations research. deterministic models. stuff like that

you will learn... formulae, i guess?

so to some extent it's "math" and if that's all you want to do with it, then go for it and that's fine

but if you love applied MATH as in

"i want to understand every inch of waht i'm learning"

it's probably better to run hands on undergrad pure math and then grad applied math

unfortunately both undergrad and grad pure math at brown are severely lacklustre in the resources so

you end up with 45-student upper divs and no extra sections 👍

e.g. my abstract algebra 1 class had 41 students

complex analysis has 44 preregistered rn

there is no recourse you are pretty much doomed to massive classes

this is not reflective of the humanities experience i think however

but if you're interested in math i'd be willing to detail more on why it's bad

or at least likely not what you're hoping it is
