most of my friends wanted to move off campus after freshman year but penn wouldn't let them 💀

it used to be that you only had to live in dorms freshman year but some time in the early 2020s it was changed

there was a reddit thread discussing this, what i said:

Living in the residential colleges is expensive, the food options are getting exponentially worse, and no one wants the risk of living in a double junior year... If I were a sophomore now, I would be renting off-campus because of just how degraded the experience has become within the last two years.

The only fix is probably building more colleges (without adding more students). Nearly all the colleges were designed to have far fewer students than they currently have, and so the dorming situations can be nothing short of atrocious. None of the colleges, except Murray/Franklin, were designed to have doubles, but they've managed to squeeze plenty of them in.

and:

yale was awful during covid — shutting down just about every social event on campus, but they lacked the ability to do anything for private spaces. any reasonable person would try and get away from that. and once those leases are made, it's easy to repeat them. you can befriend upperclassmen and get your furniture and sometimes even the lease passed-down -- far less work and cost than before.

and:

new haven is seen as a much safer city, and student standards are higher. those standards can much more easily be met in the rental market, but they are not particularly insane ones. the food isn't good, the colleges are expensive. you can live off campus, order take out every day and still not be spending much more money. there has to be some tangible reason beyond "community".

i also like hopper and trumbull in terms of aesthetic but they are universally considered kinda mid for everything else in a way JE isn't
