i also died during that
bro the dude sitting to my right smelled so bad it was a struggle 😔
That's rough. It was definitely a cs person
chm256 exam destroyed me
i aced the chem 115 exam
I have a dumb question. I'd like to do the math - cs major at purdue. on the website it says this: "Important note: When applying for any specialization within Mathematics, select “Mathematics” as your major. You will have the opportunity to specialize as you progress through the curriculum."
But on Common App I can select every math major, including math - cs. Is it bad if I do that? It's a bit hard to find more info about the program online.
Also it shows up in some places and not others, unlike other math + whatever majors
Applying EA!
also is the Indianapolis campus good for alternative major selection
nobody knows because it’s brand new, this year is the first year it’s running. with that being said every student here considers it as a branch campus and generally not worth going to, despite what the university itself is trying to push
Thats a different school bro
nah
i didnt even choose indy
didnt even want to be considered
indy would be good if it wasnt so brand spanking new
dont wanna be a guinea pig for the education that matters
Fair
Ill move alternative major to main campus then
we dont do chancemes
oh my bad!!
Going off of what has already been said but Indy is essentially a branch campus. They are essentially brand new and everything is being constructed and developed now. The only reason why you would go to indy is if you want to do motorsports engineering or want a much smaller student population. Right now, west lafayette is where it's at cause most of the resources and clubs are all here
how the hell havent i met u yet man
I mean this is a big campus and we live very busy lives. We should meet up. What dorm do you live in?
mccutch
hbu
nahnah im saying like we shud coordinate smth with all us a2cers
Damn, you on the edge of campus. I live in t block
I see. Honestly not a bad idea
wait whats tblock
ive literaly never heard if it lol
is it an apartments?
Compared to places like Winifred and Meredith south, it sucks. We are the least renovated building. But it's a great experience excluding the heat wave. It's character building and we have a great common area. Also good location.
is getting cs acceptance hard at purdue
😦
Not as hard as uiuc cs but still competitive
whats acceptance rate like
r u in state or oos
oos
what do u mean my character building lol
cuz ive heard 3 tark ppl say that so far lmao
technically, 30%, but the in state acc rate inflated it
oh ok
In state acceptance rate to Purdue is like 75% of something lol
what parts of ur app does purdue value mroe
oh dang
check the cds, cuz were not rly sure abt that
im new to this sry, what is cds?
oops mb, the common dataset
lemme just screenshot and send
Lol. We bond over a shared experience and no ac and what not. Also, people are more likely to leave their doors open, especially in the beginning of the year. So great way to meet new people and see what people are up to. Also a lot of the stupid things happen here
Just type in purdue common data set
ok bet
It should show up on google
here u go
Not sure if it's up to date for class of 28 data
But it's accurate within the last 2 years
Isn’t demonstrated interest on there aswell
OH SHOOT THEY REMOVED IT?!
dammmm
I’m litterallly maxing it out no way they remove it

I need thattt
Didn’t Purdue have a took where you could check the ar for every major
Or am I tripping
Like it was like a graph or something
There may be something out there but I have never heard of purdue having one
ah okay
there was one for college but not major as far as im aware
How competitive is the math major to get into? Especially as a second choice?
ah okay thank you
for the polytechnic school how much do you think the acceptance rate varies by major?
its gonna go down
how similar can the 1st choice and 2nd choice major essays be? i'm applying to closely related majors, but idk if the AOs read all of the essays at once
so
from my understanding they evaluate you for your first choice, and if you dont make the cut for that then they'll look at your second choice
so i imagine if theyre similar it'll be fine. just make sure to have specific reasons for why for both of them
ok
doesn’t purude offer full ride to intls
Does "Math Circle" still exist at Purdue? It's on the department of Math website (https://www.math.purdue.edu/outreach/circle/), but I don't see it in the Student Organization Catalog (https://boilerlink.purdue.edu/organizations).
Also, in general, can you join student organizations that are not from your deparment? I'm interested in CS at the College of Science, but I've been doing Math Circles at my high school (for middle schoolers) and would love to do an analogous version at Purdue for high schoolers. :D
I’m not sure about math circle, but yeah u can join any organization u want
Got it, thanks! I’ll do some more digging for math circle lol
should i bother writing the honors colege essay
hey, theres a list of pros/cons about the honors college pinned. if you have any additional questions feel feee to ask!! im in the honors college and ive really enjoyed it so far
sounds good
i read up more abt it and ill probably abstain from writing the essays, it seems a scholarship is not guaranteed for it
Math circle does not exist anymore :(
i know this because i also wanted to contribute to this supposed math circle x_x
Better housing is the main pro of it
easier access to opportunities is an unspoken pro
Oh no :( thanks for lmk anyway I guess
Is it true that most dorms at Purdue don’t have AC?
I stayed at the honors college this summer and they had ACs but I heard the other dorms don’t
some do some dont
like mccutcheon harrison meredith honors etc do
wiley tark owen etc dont
but u dont need it after the first 2-3 weeks, since it starts to get cold
i havent used mine in like 2 weeks
my dorm does not have ac
its not that bad
maybe the first few weeks are a bit bad
but if youre from somewhere that has ever been hot and humid, its like that
afterwards, its just not that bad
I see
with a fan, its essentially like having ac
I’m just not used to the concept of cold weather
the cold weather is not that bad if youre prepared
I never really understood how some places don’t have ACs
Mk
you do not want ac blasting when its less than 40 degrees
that is horribly cold
Yea that’s true
wait where r u from
I used to live in NC and Georgia
Not really
It’s so humid
Like I had to wear shorts and t shirts in early march
It only gets cold in the western parts bc that’s where the mountains are
Climate change is messing everything up rn so it could be different
Most have ac
I live in non ac and you definitely need a fan
Unless you used to no fans or ac
You will probably use it until mid September
The funny thing during the heat wave was ac people were complaining about it being too cool while the non ac people were suffering
At first, it will suck but you get used to it
If anything, living with no ac makes the community friendship much stronger
older buildings that havent been renovated to have AC
every single person ive spoken to says that not having AC only isnt great through september and otherwise its fine and not needed because itll start getting cold
i cant speak on personal experiences because ive lived with AC both of my years now but 🤷♀️

Can someone at Purdue confirm if undergrad NE students operate the PUR-1 reactor
Or if it’s only research
any idea how to write an alternate major essay for FYE? I mainly wanted to do computer engineering and not too interested in the others. (first choice cs)
Plz purduvians
Is it worth it to apply to the honors college
I would say yes
If ur willing to write the essays
if you want good housing, then yes
especially cause the housing crisis is only getting worse
when you come in, already have apartments in mind
best to start looking for apts in like sept if you want an apt over UR
i did not heed your warning
now i am freakig out cause of it
just take a deep breath, it'll all be okay
the numbers definitely seem a little scary, and it's okay to be a bit worried, I am too.
There is about 8k beds, and probably an expected 11k students going for UR housing if the numbers are similar to last year. That'll leave 3k students out of luck in UR housing, but that doesn't mean all hope is lost. Truthfully the lottery might scare more people into apartment hunting right now because they're worried about getting a slot. The good news is that if you make it through the lottery (and I'm reading the emails correctly), you will get UR housing. Last year was very scary because there was no guarentee you would get housing just because you were able to access the portal, this year will be different in that aspect.
I know a lot of people got into housing off of the waitlist last year, so it's not impossible. The most I can offer you right now is to start looking for potential apartments/find roommates for potential apartments in case UR housing doesn't work in your favor.
R u in favor of lottery system or do u think the previous system was better
Anyone else stuck on the honors college supplement
as an upperclassman id have preferred the old system but i can see why people would prefer this one
a lot of anxiety with housing last year was the uncertainty and knowing so late
i secured housing like the week before thanksgiving but thats way too late to get an apartment
this year youll know oct 28 which is much better
hopefully
@sinful viper
I added Purdue to my list like 2 days ago and honestly the essays seem like way too much 😭 and honors makes up more than half so idk if I should do it
imo its definately worth it (depending on your goals)
For most colleges, honors just has better dorms and early registration. Early registration doesn't matter too much for me but I'd be willing to do the essays for better dorms
the essays seem long, but I found them pretty easy to write and I was able to reuse some content from my other essays
the honors housing is the best housing on campus imo
you only get it for freshman year but it is leagues better than the other dorms
let me see if i have a picture of my room last year
this was my half and there was a good bit not shown behind me with the closets
Oh wow
I'm gonna do the 1k words then ig
Oh also, how hard is it to double major inside the College of Science (I'm applying first choice CS, second choice fye but I want to ultimately do bioinformatics so the bio majors interest me)
in terms of being allowed to do it, since you'd be trying to add bio it wouldnt be too difficult
the act of actually doing it is a lot. bio degrees are very stem heavy. there are 4 semesters of chem, 4 of bio prereqs, 2 of physics. some of your CS credits would definitely overlap but unless you're coming in with a lot of credits you'd have to heavily overload and do summer classes and shit if you wanted to graduate in 4 years
if you dont mind staying 5 years or whatever then it wouldnt be an issue
I have an AA from a florida CC...would that help?
let me find something for you
https://selfservice.mypurdue.purdue.edu/prod/bzwtxcrd.p_select_info you can use this and see how the credits would transfer. i know its a little nitpicky with taking cc classes but im sure at least some will come through and definately help you out, especially with like geneds.
if you've taken AP chem, AP bio, physics C, Calc AB/BC those will also all be very useful to help you out with adding the degree
I've taken all except chem, thanks lemme check!
I kinda hated honors chem...how bad is chem at Purdue 😭
truthfully im on my third semester of chem rn and ive enjoyed orgo for the life sciences
genchem was rough, even with taking ap chem
but if you dont add bio right away you'll probs be taking a different chem then I did which might be kinder to you LOL
or you might be able to enroll in 129 anyways
the orgo professors though
i can not praise enough
theyve been really great
im in orgo 2 rn
Can you just drop out of the honors college after a year, if that's the only time you get the good housing
I'm guessing there's a lot of useless/annoying classes as well
it can be, but the orgo profs in the bio department are wonderful.
yep
just 2, and theyre both only 1 credit 8 week courses. you have to get 24 honors credits but theres really easy ways to get them that arent HONR courses
you can contract any course (make an agreement with the prof to do a bit of extra work and get honors for it), honors sections, research for credit counts, and so does any level 500 course which all degrees require a few anyways
ill be done with my honors credits by the end of this year i think
and then your scholarly
project but thats whatever
Yes the honors dorms are rly rly nice
For the exploratory studies on the common app, what does the Area of interest matter? Does it change what courses I'd take?
I couldn't figure it out online
I'm mainly trying to figure out of I should put engineering or technolkogy
i imagine it just helps you get into those intro classes that are technically major locked since the point of exploratory is to explore and you cant do that without access to those classes
@pliant garnet @tulip harbor did yall go to starry nigh
No did you
I’m at a party right now
Wait no what’s that
yeah it was fun
hii
so I was wondering, what specifically do yall like about purdue? what's off campus life like?
aand I'd like to do research in my undergrad, if possible. Does Purdue have any reasonable avenues for this?
purdue is actually huge advocate on undergrad research
oh? 👀 what does that look like
its different for different departments but i found my research through the honors college
they called it a matchmaking fair
and it was kinda like speeddating but i got that arranged spring of freshman hear
that yes, but other departments do diffwrent things
I see
ik people met their PI through like a semimar class thay arranged speakers
👀 oh that's cool
or they saught help via the department of undergrad research
honestly I'm liking purdue more and more the more I hear about it
hopefully I get in 🥺
as far as off campus life its pretty rural but theres def still things nearby
tonight thwre was a festival basically on campus which is fun
im not really into partying so i cant talk about that
what major?
I see
CS haha
my second choice is physics
I'd really really like to do research
how hard was it to make friends?
are the people generally friendly?
campus events like this seem pretty fun
I definitely want to go somewhere with a solid school culture
i got really lucky and met my core friendgroup online beforehand including my boyfriend LOL
but my other friends ive made through clubs and stuff
so i didnt think it was too difficult
it doesnt happen super often but it is a thing 😎
no im back in taybfs room
oops lol
A lot of people form friendships groups through BGR
Awesome
this too
BGR? 👀
orientation
oh found it
It’s the orientation program at purdue
that seems cool
it’s worth I’d say
its advertised as one of the best orientation programs in the country LOL
I just wasn’t lucky
idk how true it is but bgr is a must
also @vocal solar its defo worth going for honors imo
yeah I'll apply, at least
I just dragged all the A2C Purdue commits into a group chat and half of us became close fiends
My failed talking stage I found on the gram
I'm not sure what my shots are at getting accepted in the first place though, especially since it's CS, and I come from a competitive school district 😔
I told you right
Where you from?
Bay?
always worth trying
yeah
Yes agree
northern virginia lol, D.C suburbs
Just apply EA @vocal solar
yeah, I'm doing EA
And you’ll be fine I believe
always try to EA publics
RD is tough
yeah I've heard as much
gotcha
If you have the time. I sure didn’t
i TA the honors seminar
I'm pretty great, so i'll probably be fine
its not extra time
hopefully 🥴
For context I have a friend that got into Cambridge and CMU for engineering but waitlisted Purdue RD
its only technically 2 extra 1 credit classes
No like the essay
oh what 😭
I know someone who got into purdue RD, but they were rejected from CMU
Eh Purdue RD is harder
I see
I also know Caltech admit Purdue RD waitlist
it's because spots fill up, isn't it?
oh i tgought they were chill but im jist really passionate about psychobiology
LOL
I would say so
I see
interdisciplinary education is so cool
I was so burnt out man
oh, how hard is it to dual major?
Depends how interdisciplinary we’re talking
Depends on the major
I know CS math majors
I was thinking I could do like, Philosophy + CS.
And CS physics
or linguistics + CS
That’s gon be hard
fr
Try UIUC
you could do degree plus
yeah I'm applying there 👀
CS and Phil I’ve only heard from Oxford
so it would only be an extra year i think
If you wanna try
their CS-X programs are pretty great
😭
I see
Does engineering have that
im planning on doubling if i get the RA posistion
all do i think
At Purdue, Degree Plus offers a streamlined path for students to complete a degree from the College of Liberal Arts along with a degree from another academic area.
Thanks
btw, what's your major?
Oh fuck it’s 5 year
oh, lol
but I’ll be specializing in ME
that's pretty hard isn't it 👀 good luck
lolol
alright then, I need to finish up my essays
thanks for the advice and insight yall
Good luck bro
hopefully I'll get in 🥺
I'll keep that in mind, thanks!!
yea 100%
Look up EURO and FTR
I will, thanks!
I had to glaze tf out of undergrad research for the honors essay
i didnt think they were bad at all tbh
They are not bad at all
I actually fw Purdue heavy after really basic research into the school
So I just kinda talked
Bro ikr like I took it off my list but it kept popping up and convincing me to apply 😭
Purdue is actually so good
My counselor shit talked it so hard I’m not gonna hold u
She does not fw Indiana
I don't talk to my counselor about the colleges I'm applying to cuz lowkey she only thinks the Florida ones are valid 😭
so real so true
Fact checked by real Purduvian patriots ✅
Real Boiler Makers
Nah why is the mascot Boilermaker
What does that mean
That's almost as bad as Vanderbilt 😭
What I learned was that there was a football game where Purdue destroyed another team
And the team got mad and put in the newspaper “Purdue’s big burly boilermakers beat so-and-so 49-0 (or whatever)”
Boilermakers being the big strong guys who worked at the railroad, not actual students
our mascots are confusing we generally just say purdue pete / trains
i'm on the fema declared disasters list but didn't actually have any damage, should/can i still select this?
for reference, i qualify for a waiver for georgia tech
I think you can
Given how it's written I probably wouldn't, since it implies you've been directly affected, but I think it's defensible
I really hope they like my second honor's college essay
I didn't follow their hint at all and kind of just yapped about whatever I wanted to
which one was that one/what did you write about? you can DM if you dont wanna share im just curious & im pretty involved in the honors college LOL
Yeah idk, I want the fee waiver but I'm not sure if I really count as a "victim"
I am in the red here
Yeah that's valid, I'm not happy about spending the fee either haha
I would probably just do it
Only $500/year for nmf is crazy though
Like why even have that
Is it ok to reference other essays
Like for my why major essay I talk about the research I've done, and if I could reference that in my four pillars essay for the honors college that would be nice
shuold purdue's "why major" essay have anything about the school since there's already a "why purdue" essay
idk about in general, but my why major essay also included how the schol specifically will help with my majors, and opportunities for my major
they won’t get read by the same person so i wouldn’t reference other essays
Wait
So do they only consider your honors college essays if you are initially accepted?
Or are they considered as a part of regular admissions as well
they are seperate admissions. so yes, they wont look at your honors college essays unless you get into the school itsself
meaning you can get into purdue but not honors
ive only met one person that got into purdue but not honors
i knew a few actually
but theres deff a good bit of self selection bias in actually applying for honors
a lot of ppl dont bother bc they dont wanna write the essay so the people who apply are usually 1) very qualified and 2) actually want it
Ah ok sounds good. Tbh I think my honors college essays are better than my regular essays but I'll survive
I wrote my purdue application 2 days before the ea date so I ended up not applying to honors
Nope
For purdue's supplementals, they give you a why us and a why major. Is there any point then in mentioning certain aspects about purdue in my why major essay if I'm already talking about all the opportunities for my major in the why us essay?
what other reasons aside from your major? personally i didnt mention anything about my major in the why purdue, i ended up talking about clubs but they also gave you a longer word count
lmao this is actually so bad how did this get me in
i wont even be taking viruses and viral diseases because the professor sucks ASS
Well cs is part of my niche I'm trying to convey in why purdue
addressing clubs is only one aspect of the why us
there's also research institutions and cs classes
for ex. I want to combine my passion of music with CS, particularly with AI since my ECs align with those
so i said i wanted to join the AIM lab which utilizes machine learning tools that optimize practice sessions
which is very valid, 100 words vs 250 words is a large enough difference. i would probably recap on the opportunities, i wouldnt be shocked if different people read different essays in regards to your application, but if you have multiple things maybe shift some of the "why major" stuff in your "why us" essay over to make more room for other things in why us
Actually that's a good solution
thanks
im in fye but for why us i wrote about the research a purdue prof does and the aamb (you can also talk about the clubs). for why major i just talked about a specific field that i was interested in.
can i send you both of my honors ones? i am planning to apply this friday when i get my october sat results
hi, absolutely!
thank you! i'll send them in DMs soon
Look into the data mine learning community
You could yap about that
I yapped about epics somewhere in my application and now I'm in it
what abt honors
i didnt apply
but shouldnt be hard if you make the effort
alright
data mine my beloved 🙏
id recommend datamine over honors (im not biased at all)
For engineering, it's definitely getting harder. I know a bunch of people, including myself who were deferred
Oh mb
you can do both 🧠
mhm
oooh i shudve 😔
i didnt realize until it was too late either lol
otherwise id have applied for wisp
i enjoy honors though so its an all well moment
Ur good
The point i was trying to make to current applicants is purdue engineering isn't a safety
Cause a lot of people think that it is
i thought it was
thought uiuc was a safety
theres a reason im not there
reaches
I would disagree honestly
things getting spicy nowadays
Some guy in the UIUC channel really didn't like my reasoning but some majors at UIUC have had relatively high acceptance rates for the past few years
Like
idk how much to trust the word of the purdue overlords
I can give you the major I'm applying to as an example
like i said
things are changing this application season
yea, idk how much purdue actually gonna act on it
purdue
but they tryna reduce acceptance rates
and engineering might reduce
we shall see
could just be a bunch of malarky
it was mine lol but i also didnt know how selective it was
They have been reducing the overall acceptance rate, but the yield is going up
this year is gonna be the hardest app cycle of all time
for all schools, but especially purdue
I actually fw purdue really heavy so if yall reject me I'm gonna be a little annoyed
praying for u 🙏
08 stock market crash
less kids, more value of money, less value of college among parents
etc etc
Yo fock the market
theres like an nyt article on it or smth, but i lost it 😔
ive seen folks with 1100 to like 1600 at purdue engineering
I see
I've got a 1480 right now, waiting for october scores to come in
honestly not sure how to feel about my score
what about high school GPAs?
mine isn't amaazing, but I do have an upwards trend and a pretty challenging course rigor.
youll be fine
just have like above a 3.5
its all about how you rpesent yourself in the application
this is true
the numbers alone wont save you
i know my freshman year the AR had dropped from googles 60-some% to like 50%
you gotta hae somethign tangible
and i know that bc i got an email from the university lmao
😭
what did yall decide to write your personal statements on, and how did you get there?
that shit took way too long
my ideas switched
I know im having a terrible time 😩
and changed
supposedly the overall oos acceptance rate is 45%
over a course of 6 motnhs
I see
I can manage that hopefully 🥺
i wrote my personal statement about cross country
i wrote about covid being ass for me
I kind of feel like mine is all over the place, im not really sure how I like it
a sob story and a little light at the end of the tunnel
it will be lower if you want cs/eng or anything competitive. its evened out with the liberal arts and other easier to get into majors
I see
mine was a revenge story
it was so silly
one of my ideas was to write about my browser tabs on my phone, and sort of use them as a way to discern my character
wow
thats insane
it's not really a story type thing though, so that's worrying me.
halved in 4 years
i wrote about roly polies and squirrels in my backyard
lmao, I assume AI comes under the engineering school, yeah?
nah its under the dept of cs
in college of science
it will continue to drop im sure. im hoping purdue locks tf in with actually dropping it this year to account for the higher yield so housing isnt screwed overrr
not nearly as much as cs, but its not un-competitive
I see
its also rly hard to tell how compettive it is cuz its so new and small
ikrrr i need the housing
i kinda wanna go in and poke around
yeahh the inside has like a silicon valley startup office feel
but the outside is nice brick and mortar
stop me too 😭 hoping and praying RA works out. my roommate for next year is also applying to be an RA so i hope we both get it so that we dont abaondon the other in whatever apartment/dorm we're in
we aint gonna be the ones who reap the benefits of the housing
im tryna be an RA
tark here i come 😔
best of luck!
glgl 🙏
if you get lucky enough to stay in UR, you probs wont be in tark unless you end up becoming an RA
yea, was not planning on doing that until next year
I know someone who got in RD, they had a 4.3W and a 1520 or something, I think.
but yknow its just how the river rolls
OH is tark mainly for freshmen?
1520 was my superscore. I got 800 on math
yes
oh I see
for sure for sure, i wanted to my freshman year but i self-handicap so i ended up not applying but i locked in this year
hopefully october turns out well 🥺
chances arent 0, but they usually reserve it for freshman
owen, tark, wiley are all predominately freshman
yay :D
others may be considered 'upper division' or 'lower division' but its not super majority
cuz id mentally resigned myself to tark/owen
like technically windsor is upper division and mostly for upperclassman but we have lots of freshman here this year
i mean
There are a couple of sophomores in tark
sit on it
if you get housing
and the only option is tark
take it
because it will be cheap
I know someone in tark who rooms with a junior
and you will be on campus
The ghetto life is great. Great location, people, and low price
it def happens, not saying it doesnt. but its not that common
dont be picky when it comes to UR housing, be grateful that you get to stay
yk
like if i end up in wiley/owen/meredith its not ideal but i will take it
but traditionally wiley is all male so idk the odds of that happening for me
Is it actually
I thought it was coed
yeah
i think this is maybe its first, or second year being co-ed
but in previous years it was all male
the all male dorms were honors north, tark, wiley, and cary while the all female dorms were honors south, meredith, meredith south and windsor
Isn't mccutcheon also all male
but wiley is currently co-ed and theres one guy room in honors south which is so silly
yes i forgot about mccutcheon
Or was it coed at some point
Lol
Fair
lmao
i miss honors sometimes
no
wait mccutch is coed?
no
My RA does not care at all
mine like didnt tell us about anything, literally didnt do her job, and was borderline homophobic and as a bisexual girly that was just
mine this year is way better
Oh. That's rough
my RA is chill
like i didnt learn that hall club was a thing until this year
???
bc mine just never said anythig
and there was other stuff too
but
i digress
not my problem anymore
unless i miraculously get RA in honors south
its just kinda like
they plan events for the whole hall
im involved with hall club, its fun
ik hillenbrands took them to kings island
Nice
windsor and meredith combine and do a winter formal
lego night is popular
we just had a buildabear and plant event
I heard tark and Meredith do a dance
sounds about right
I think there is a UR field trip going there this weekend
it very much depends on whose on the board but im sad that i didnt know about honors
so jealous
id love to go
They are also going to six flags
but alas im stuck on campus
im doing pumpkin painting though with an org im in
so thats something at least
That's cool
not fair
On top of that, they made it a lottery system to go on the trip
What is with this university and lotteries. The freshman football passport was a lottery, the amusement park trips were also lotteries, and housing is now a lottery
so fun..
Got to love purdue
gotta get folks addicted to gambling
gambling is banned in indiana
unless its for housing ofc, then its perfectly legal
Lol I saw the photo of them condemning gambling on sports right next to telling you to enter the housing lottery
Taking Purdue off my list 😡
😔
If u do Econ then u can legally gamble (invest in the stock market)
I prefer putting all my net worth on green and spinning the wheel
ok so
I just got my sat scores, it's a 1490, is it...well, I know the application has more to it, but it is decent enough?
I was really hoping for a 1500+ 😭
that should be fine :)
Anyone have some examples for the honors college essays 🙏
a 1490 is beyond well for here
i aint even get that close sat wise
yeah but I'm cs 😭isn't it a lot more competitive
I see
I'll try not to 🥺
I'm super confused about how to write the why major essay for purdue for FYE. I have a specific engineering major in mind (Computer engineering) so should i talk about that mostly or engienering as a whole?
Yeah same here, anyone know?
i hate that we have to write another essay if we chose an alternative major
But OOS is kinda cracked isn't it
if i apply for a not-so competitive alternate major but extremely competitive first major, would there be any chances of atleast getting the alternate
I'm from a small ass state
That helps
yep. theyre looked at independently. if they decide you dont get your first choice then they will look at your second choice and evaluate from there
I’m writing about CompE specifically but I’m not sure if it’s the right move
so I'm currently in the midst of writing my "why purdue" essay, I've mentioned a handful of things that are academic in nature (e.g I mentioned research opportunities provided by EURO, and PurPL) - I'm looking for things that aren't as academic in nature now, though, and might be more unique to Purdue. I know that it's a very diverse school, which I'm a fan of, since I'm from an ethnic background myself, and I feel like it'd prevent me from feeling alienated. I also know there's a loot of student organizations, and I'd like to know some more about those and which ones are cool/interesting.
I think there’s a website
Discover unique opportunities at PURDUE UNIVERSITY | BoilerLink! Find and attend events, browse and join organizations, and showcase your involvement.
I found a couple I liked and mentioned why I like them
would you recommend picking an alternative major?
to be honest, I'd rather study CS at a safety school than not study CS at purdue
I was thinking of putting physics as my alternate
physics or math
if you'd rather do this then i dont see a reason to put an altnerative major down
gotcha, thanks.
can CS majors do research under EURO?
euro?
What are something things you guys don't like about Purdue?
Besides the housing situation 💀
engineering undergraduate research office
im not sure about that
but if ur engineering
look into VIP
its research for credit
the fact its in indiana
tho i havent rly felt it yet
its still in indiana lol
not rly
i dont got a car
and everything i need is off campus
just like the fact that im in Nowhere, Indiana is off putting to a bunch understandably
How is parking?
I'm going to get a car so I'd prefer if there's decent student parking
Yeah that's fair
Honestly not having to drive sounds like a dream
I'm sick of it ngl
nah, cs
check out datamine VIP
I'll look into it, thanks
i cant seem to find this online but whats the deadline for when the school needs to send in transcripts for EA
because i have just screwed up big time
because i have to send my transcript through a online website, and rn its locked until nov 4th so i cannot request transcript. If the deadline is like 2 weeks after Nov 1 i can still send it in
does purdue superscore?
phew ok thanks
also should i send my ap scores to purdue? do they even consider those for admissions?
ap scores are only sent for college credit after you get accepted im pretty sure
omg purdue has such a pretty campus
te food sucks
bad
the vast majority of things youll need you can find on campus or get to via the bus system
yeaaa :D
fr i remember walking down a road and seeing some old boiler thing in a glass display in a building
i rly wanna check those out someday
so pretty, would recommend
its just an outdoor garden
its horticulutre park lol, horticulture gardens is just some greenshouse
nope
ooooh theyre rly close
im in mccutch, so ill def check it out
ty!!
the park is pretty but the gardens are prettier
park is >> tho
taybf and i do a lot of walks over there
Oh ngl that's sad to hear
I hoped at least the honor's college would have good food
it doesnt work like that
the honors students have the same food as everyone else
bland, poorly cooked
Yikes
Are you forced to buy a meal plan or can you cook for yourself
If I can cook for myself I'm chilling
you need to get a meal plan if you live in UR
are there kitchens in the dorms?
I know there won't be any per room, but is it like a per floor/per building type thing?
also how are the dorms in general?
per building
at least in mine
they range from rly good, to rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly rly bad
lmfao ok
depends
university residences
also depends
lolol, gotcha
if your okay with parking far away its not too bad
do people tend to get apartments and stuff after freshman year?
a good amount, yeah
we may even be forced to 😔
Like how far we talking
How long do the essays take btw? If anyone's written them 😭
I'm applying to honors so if I assume I get that housing
edge of campus by mcchutch
Will the parking be not so bad
I have 2 schools to do before nov 1 still 😔😔😔
its like a 10’minite walk from honors
Oh not bad at all
theres street parking on russel but its competitive
Do u need a car?
How much is parking?
For Purdue?
nah
How much work to get to airport?
uhh reshall pass is 250 a year i think?
Oh WTF
you could walk there, it’s kinda far but
maybe less idk i don’t t’énerver
Most places its like 60-100 a month (other than U-M which is 200 a month)
remember
LMAO
you won’t be getting a pass as a freshman
yeah
That goes to airport?
Oh
purdue has ur own airport
Are you fr
has a flight to chicago
No parking pass as a freshman sucks
there’s buses to ohare and shit
Do they enforce it
theres also a bus for free to purdue indianapolis, and then uber to aiport
it’s possible but not likely it’s usually like you work off campus
or shuttles to chicago aiport
Like we'd need a valid reason
why do you need one lol
So I'd need to take a connecting flight to my location
To need parking
I want somewhere to park my car
New York parking sucks
yes and they don’t save a lot of spots for freshman
Super expensive
why do you need your car here
^
idt they would take that as a valid reason tbh
Oh ok, I thought Chicago was kinda far?
That's kind of annoying
it’s like a 2.5 hour drive
Is it easier to get one after freshman year?
Oh damn
theres an airport in indianapolis that i use, i like it cuz its small and goes direct to where i needa go
anything you need is a bus ride or walk away
but there are shuttles to chicago
Idk how the north looks tbh
Alr
ehhh
Well it's more of like
it was a nasty fight to get one this year
Idk it's complicated
Oh fr
Did Purdue over-enroll or smth?
if they add your car sure but only one car on campus per permit at a time
Oh fr
yes
you’ll be fine without a parking pass i promise 💀
All the cali kids migrating I bet
nah
IU protests made ppl commit to purdue instead
indiana university
There can't be that many people in indiana
Fr
not just IU
Like 3 right?
yeah
mung specifically referenced IU
4?
yield in general was higher than expected due to palestine protests
but the reason isn’t really relevant
i feel safe here
My school in New York got encampments cuz ppl came up from Columbia
i havent seen any protests on campus yet
Did Columbia have lower yield then?
It was low k bummy but at least we had online school
but tay can speak on it better
i mean irs columbia so probably not
True
it is
Low key I want a college town that gets cold in the winter / snows
there was a palestine protest last semester but it was very peaceful
it was more of a sit-in type of thing
i signed their petition
I thought Gainesville was cold am I cooked 💀💀💀
yes
it’s going to start dropping so bad
😭
yeahh there was one a few weeks ago, they just marched and put a bunch of fflags on a lawn
I'm a florida man
i think last winter the temp dropped to a feels like of -35
WHAT
yeah outside of lilly and the hillel
Does it snow
This is what I'm looking for
yeah it snows
you should definitely walk under the math building then when it’s windy
I'm gonna be doing ROTC so I can't wait to see what they make us do in the middle of winter
Shenanigans for sure
@pliant garnet how is AI as a major? I was considering it but just afraid it wouldn't be as recognized as CS
im just a freshman, so im not into the ai curriculum yet, but also no one is since its so new
its in the dept of cs in the college of science, so administratively i would suppose its the same
but perception wise, its rly weird
current students see it as a scam or jumping on a bandwagon
Oh ok
based
but cs professionals and researchers see it as a rly good and worthwile major that will def pay off
so im sorta a guinea pig and will have to see how it goes over the next 4 years
Wait if it's in dept of cs then no point of applying for it for second choice right? Because if I get rejected from CS, I'd prob get rejected from AI?
AI is fake they're gonna turn it off
no
if u dont get cs
u can still get ai
yea
I like how this implies AI = 0
first 2 years is simlar to cs
because to be honest I'm not that interested in AI, my big thing is being able to take more theory based CS courses.
and more phil and psych and ethics courses
I see
3rd and 4th year its more ai oriented
Purdue admits by major?
