Boston is always super cold, which can be depressing, but so can a super warm environment, bc it’ll feel like you’re at vacation 24/7 and having to study at the same time

co-op is basically a 4 or 6 month paid internship that you do. you apply through NUWorks, meaning there is a specific application ONLY for neu students (less competition and thru a connected company so that increases ur chances) and instead of having to apply for internships 1 year in advance you apply on demand, meaning you can apply weeks before it starts

so theres a good number of people who are unable to get a coop and have to search again the next cycle (at least in cs, other majors are less cooked)

As a student interested in engineering, I can't speak much to the academics at Babson, especially since it's more focused on business. But in terms of environment and social life, the two schools are pretty different. Babson is in rural Needham, and honestly, you're kind of stuck there. There's a town, yeah, but it's very white, and the food options are limited—there’s maybe a Chinese place and an Indian spot, but nothing exciting. You can head over to Olin College down the road, which I think has better food, but you only get a limited number of swipes there.

Socially, it’s a mixed bag. Frats and sororities are very present, and depending on who you talk to, the experiences range from fine to downright scary—especially some of the initiation stuff from a few years ago. Frat guys seem calm on the surface, but there’s definitely some questionable stuff. On the flip side, the women I’ve met are fun and down-to-earth. It does feel like more of a “classic” college environment, just without a real college town.

Academically, you're locked into business for the most part, but you can take classes at Wellesley or Olin if there's space. The smaller class sizes at those places can be a nice change, and you're also able to join their clubs. But again, space is limited. In general, I prefer Boston to Needham—there's just more to do, and more room to avoid people if that’s what you want. In Needham, you'll run into the same people all the time, which might be good or bad depending on what you're looking for.

Culturally, it’s complicated. There’s definitely partying and open drinking—it’s not hard to find a party if that’s your thing. But racism was a real issue for me. I’ve been told I look white or Asian depending on the context, and I still faced problems. A Black friend of mine heard people casually say the n-word, which was really unsettling. It’s something to seriously think about if you’re a person of color.

In contrast, NEU feels way bigger and more flexible. You have more class options, more clubs, and more people—which means it's easier to find your crowd or avoid people if needed. There are social issues too, of course, but it's just a very different vibe. Babson definitely has strong business connections, so if you’re committed to finance or entrepreneurship, it could be worth it. But overall, you’re kind of choosing between a tight-knit, limited-town experience and a bigger, more diverse city life.

Also, keep in mind that getting into Boston from Babson is not as easy as people make it sound. Don’t fall for the whole “it’s close to Boston” thing—technically, it is, but in practice, it’s a hassle. It’s about a 30-minute drive if traffic is light, and that’s a big if. If you don’t have a car, you're looking at a combination of shuttles, commuter rail, and/or the T, which can easily turn into an hour-plus trip one way. So yeah, you’re not casually popping into the city for lunch or a quick hangout. It’s a real effort.

Just a heads-up—my experience with NEU is pretty limited, so I can’t really speak to what it’s like there. If you're seriously considering it, I’d definitely recommend talking to someone from the Class of ’28 or a current student who knows the campus and culture better. Same appiles to Babson.

the only instance i can see northeastern possibly lowering ur aid is if ur scholarship amount is gonna cover more than what you're billed so that you're not having excessive refunds every semester
