#All UCs (2024-2025)
1 messages ¡ Page 42 of 1
does anyone know if there is a discord server for accpeted ucsc students?
Competitive, but you will have a small advantage
I know all classes up to 28 have one, haven't heard of one for 29 yet
Absolutely. I got WL'd at Berk, UCSB,UCI and got off the UCSB, UCI WL's when I applied
I see your point, but Iâd argue that UCs are stronger if you plan on going to graduate school overall.
While itâs true that research positions at places like Berkeley can be competitive, there is such a large amount happening at UCs means that there are still plenty of opportunities, especially for students who are proactive. Many labs actively recruit undergraduates, and while it might take more initiative to get into a lab, you are still being prepared for life after college. As a UC student myself, I have cold emailed and have received multiple interviews and offers for labs by emailing roughly 30 PIs. Of course, there were more rejections than acceptances, but itâs very doable. In addition, many labs prefer underclassmen as they are able to stay for a longer amount of time, giving them a larger return on investment.
Also, many UCs have formalized research programs specifically for underclassmen (like URAP at Berkeley), which helps guide undergrads while reducing competitiveness of traditional lab positions.
Another factor Iâd argue for is funding. UCs receive significantly more research funding than CSUs, meaning that students at UCs are more likely to have access to a larger variety projects, better facilities, and more experienced faculty. This can lead to stronger research outcomes, potentially increased likelihood publications, and ultimately, a more competitive graduate school application.
And yes, while it might be easier to connect with faculty at CSUs, the connections of UC faculty can be extremely beneficial when it comes to getting strong letters of recommendation and determining where to apply to grad school.
Perhaps you may be better fitted for a CSU, but I believe if someone is proactive (as many a2cers are), they will do perfectly fine at a UC.
who usually created them? Are there any other social medias with communities for accepted students?
I know there was a class of 2028 insta, idk who creates the servers
Also, Cal's huge size is a Cal problem
Agreed with this. UCSD undergrad->UCSD grad here. A couple of my friends in Undergrad are now in Stanford/MIT/Berkeley doing their PhD's
It's not the same issue at each UC
A lot of the UC's have too many students for too little land area ngl
I know freshman and sophmores here doing research, this is a by campus issue
yeah i know freshmen who've done URAP at berkeley
Essentially every premed at ucla is in a lab by sophomore yr latest
Maybe but the point I'm trying to make is that research is accesible to all levels
there's also so many tiny programs for different majors
Some are in labs before they even come in
Yeah Ik.
like there's a data science discovery program where you do ds research
Yeah having a hospital on campus is nice
Lowkey our hospital program is mid asf
i dont know anyone who's actively put in the effort to find an opportunity and has not been able to find one here
But it is cause of the med school labs
UCSD's is ultracompetitive lol
^^ esp in terms of research
The med school labs?
my premed friend is dying to get research here atm
yep
like yeah you do need to grind a little stuff won't fall into your lap
Wdym
but i truly believe hard work pays off
I mean I think thatâs the case everywhere you just need to mass apply
The med school labs allow for clinical research
And different types overall
yep
How does that make the hospital mid though
No no like the actual hospital volunteering program we have at ucla that is accessible to everyone
Probably the amount of funding the hospital gets + research grants and stuff
All the competitive stuff is amazing
Oh ok
Itâs like not volunteering
Itâs just for resume
UCLA med stuff is amazing though
I see
But yeah CSUs are inherently designed not for grad school but to help you get a job, while UCs are inherently designed to advance research causes, so by design UCs are better, no matter which UC
I see
Are tuition costs very different for in vs out?
do the UCs ask for additional information in the intent for waitlist??
i wanna submit my ucsd and uci forms
but i dont know if they require anything extra
and i really wanna send my senior year grades
They do not
oh đ
Yes, they will take something like a 25k tuition supplment if you are oos. Also, you will have fewer fin aid support
@tropic minnow on the website for ucsc it says only people with 2.5+ cumulitave gpa can take up to 22 credits. How does this work for the freshmen class? Do they take the highschool gpa?
I see, makes sense
You'll take 3 classes your first quarter. After that, you can do more than that
That's what I'm doing this quarter, I'm gonna do 4
Ya it does unfortunately suck
so how many quarter credits are you approximately getting per semester?
1.5 quarter creds = 1 sem cred
Roughly
15, classes are generally 5 credit units, this is not including labs if stem
Berkeley did ask for 1st sem senior year grades and an optional LOCI. UCI solely asked for an optional LOCI but I didn't really put in the effort for it as I wasn't planning on going there. Tbh I don't really know why I opted into the UCI waitlist cause I was deadset on going to UCSD at that point(unless I got into UCLA/Berkeley or somewhere higher)
You can in fact, go all the way to 27 units (5 classes, 1 lab) but you must petition
That's my understanding at least
I would not recommend that
you have no will to live if you're taking more than 16 units a quarter...
Me rnâŚ
Well that's why I recommended not doing that
I am dropping to 17 next quarter cannot be doing this again
Which UC do you go to?
La
Do you know where the optional LOCI form is? for UCi
But also I'm doing 20 to test myself. I have backup plans in case I need to drop down to 15 though, so if you prepare I think it's not a bad idea to try
or did they get rid of that
mind if you DM?
Iâm in 22 rn âšď¸âšď¸âšď¸
Never again
Godbless your soul
ooh I have a couple friends who went to UCLA. One's still there atm
It will be a lot of reading and writing next quarter, but I think I can do it
I would have done 23 next but this quarter was enough for me đĽ˛đĽ˛đĽ˛
W what major are they
Might have been. LOCI for UCI back when I applied was solely to appeal a decision. I wasn't really in the mood to go through that much effort for a school I wasn't really gunning to go for. UCI admit for me was kinda luck of the draw.
Math-Econ. He's working on his MFE now
Well hey, now you know your limit lol
I think i did one quarter where I signed up for 22 units. Luckily I had a course that I couldn't get off the waitlist so I dropped back to 17
Do UCs give credits for A-Levels?
I would've died if I stayed at 22
Dang my ra is that major
I lowkey still mightâŚ
Weâll see
La does
Noted
SD does too
I think itâs harder to do 22 if itâs pure stem
Bet
I should be able to avoid a lot of entry-level physics/chemistry/math classes then ig
Oh hell yes
Mine this quarter were like 3 stem and 1 humanities so it was ok
22 units in STEM is đ
Don't want to clog this thread up, can I move this to DMs?
Depends on your score and if your A-levels translate to an actual class/rip a GE requirement
Makes sense
If youâd like Iâm not sure if others would like to see as well though
I have predicted A*'s in A-Level Physics, Chemistry, Maths đ
And a's in the AS Levels for all three of those
You may be able to knock off some course pre-reqs and maybe a couple GE requirements
Noted
Just to establish where Iâm coming from, my parents are professors, and we have many friends who are faculty at UCs, CSUs, and private universities. Iâve also lived in undergraduate housing since I was nine and have been taking courses ever since.
I see where you're coming from, but while UCs receive more funding and conduct more research, that doesnât automatically translate to better opportunities for every student. A higher volume of research means little if access is hypercompetitive, restricted, or favors those with prior experience and connections.
You mention cold emailing 30+ PIs to get a research position, which I think is the main issueâUC students face a highly competitive process just to get into a lab, and many still come up empty-handed. Saying students âjust need to be proactiveâ assumes persistence guarantees results, but not everyone has the time, resources, or connections to email dozens of professors. Your success is great, but itâs not the norm. At many UCs, undergrads can feel like an afterthought in research-heavy departments, whereas at CSUs, faculty are more accessible, research opportunities are more inclusive, and students arenât just another face in an overcrowded applicant pool.
At CSUs, undergraduates donât have to fight tooth and nail for research positions (partly because fewer students are competing for them). Faculty actively encourage students to get involved, and research isnât dominated by graduate students the way it often is at UCs. This means CSU students can often get meaningful hands-on experience sooner and build closer relationships with faculty (which are both critical for grad school applications). A strong letter of rec from a professor who knows you personally is arguably more valuable than one from a big-name researcher who barely interacted with you.
I think it all boils down to the student, not the institution.
If someone is proactive (like you said most a2cers are), the skill ceiling at a CSU can actually be higher. While UCs may offer more total research opportunities, access can be limited, and undergrads can struggle to get actually meaningful roles. At a CSU, a dedicated student can take on more responsibility, gain hands-on experience earlier, and develop stronger relationships with faculty. The difference isnât just about the number of opportunities but how much you can do with them. If youâre willing to put in the effort, you may end up with better experience, stronger letters of recommendation, and a more competitive grad school application than many UC students who were stuck waiting for their turn.
(oops, wrong reply lol)
I mean it all really depends on what you do in your college life and what experiences you want to make your undergrad life all about. I know plenty of people who went to Cal States and did great things with their lives and others who went to Berkeley and have a pretty mediocre life. I know a friend of mine who turned down UCSD to go to UCR just cause he'd have a better chance at med school due to lowered competition. I can't really say how the situation is like at Cal States cause I've never really had academic experiences there.
Same thing can be said of people who went to HYPSM. It all depends on what you make of your college experience.
Godspeed if you do, you're incredibly smart so I believe in you
Totally agree, 100% comes down to what you make of your uni experience. One of the main advantages of CSUs is the lack of graduate students and much less competition for research positions, which means faculty have more space and willingness to mentor undergrads, therefore giving proactive students better access.
ah thats teue
the whole appeals process is kind of useless for mw tho bc they apparently dont want senior year grades n activities???? so what do u even say in there
wrong. im getting in next year. LOCKED IN
Valid benefit... Usually at UC, it's an experienced PhD/PostDoc really doing all the mentoring rather than the PI themself lol
but I think the extra research money that UC gets really goes a long way. UC literally pays you to go to high level research conferences and present at some pretty hard hitting areas. I'm pretty sure that CSU has the same type of research opportunities if you look hard enough but it's more profound at UC...
I donât disagree that CSUs offer unique advantages, especially in terms of accessibility to faculty and research opportunities. However, I still believe that, on the whole, UCs provide a stronger foundation for students aiming for top graduate programsâthough, as you correctly point out, that doesnât mean theyâre the only path.
I agree that research volume alone doesnât automatically translate to better opportunities for every undergraduate. But Iâd argue that even with competition, the scale and prestige of UC research still offer significant advantages. While getting into a lab might take more persistence at a UC, students who do secure a spot often gain access to renowned faculty whose names carry significant weight in academia. Connections still matter in grad school admissions, and a letter from a highly regarded PI in a well-funded lab can open doors that might be harder to access at a CSU. Moreover, thereâs plenty of smaller labs where you can get direct exposure to your PI. Also, in terms of my success not being the norm, perhaps thatâs true. But every single undergrad I have met at my UC who has wanted to get into research has gotten there, regardless of their path.
I also think itâs important to note that while CSU students may have more immediate access to faculty and potentially earlier research opportunities, they sometimes miss out on the depth and rigor of research environments that UCs have. Many CSU research projects are relatively small-scale due to funding limitations, whereas at UCs, even undergraduates can contribute to major, high-profile work that gets published in top journals. While I agree that leading a smaller project at a CSU has its benefits, collaborating on cutting edge research at a UC can be equally valuable when it comes to graduate school applications. Also, many undergraduates lead projects here after having a few years of experience.
As for your point about CSU students getting into top PhD programs, itâs doable from everyone as there are incredibly talented students in every place, and strong mentorship at a CSU can absolutely help. That said, much data still favors UCs when it comes to graduate school placement rates, especially for top-tier programs
I think our main point of disagreement is our priorities in terms of accessibility vs opportunity. CSUs for sure, can provide a more supportive and personal research environment, but UCs offer opportunities that, while harder to access, can be more impactful in the long run. It ultimately depends on the student. If someone thrives in a more personal, hands-on environment, a CSU could be a better fit. But if they are willing to work through the competition and utilize the resources of a major research university, a UC may be a better fit.
Plus with the faculty research quality at UC, working at a high value lab could make or break your application to HYPSM tier universities
^^
Also if being mentored directly by the PI is super important to you thereâs always smaller/newer labs
I cracked my B.S./M.S. application to UCSD cause one of my recommenders was a high level researcher
this is very good discussion actually kudos both @orchid pine and @dry pollen i enjoyed reading ngl
UCSD Grad is cracked af ngl. I've seen people turn down Ivies to come down here
oh and pranav as well thanks for all of ur guys's thoughts
In CSU's defense, I think CSU prepares you better for vocational/industry jobs better than UC's. Most UC professors are researchers and are more inclined in that direction. At the same time, those professors often have high level industry connections that you could leverage to get a job if you use them correctly
I fully agree. I do think the industry you are planning on entering does play a large role though
That and from my understanding UC teaches theory more than CSUs so it's a different curriculum also
I think UC's have a PhD apprentice program where you can work on a mini project with a PhD student to build lab experience. You're not tied to an official research lab but you can add it to your CV, which you could then use to crack lab applications. Plus, it doesn't hurt to ask your professors directly if they have space in their lab for you. I asked a professor of mine if he could refer me to labs that do research in planetary sciences. That professor literally went out of his way to recommend me a lab and even put in a word to the lab PI on my behalf.
Did way more to help me than just random cold emails
Absolutely.
Yep.
I see what youâre saying and I think you summed up the core difference well of accessibility vs. prestige. UCs do have high-profile research environments, and for students who can break into them, the name recognition of a well-known PI can certainly carry weight in grad school admissions. But as you also pointed out, not everyone gets those opportunities, and I think thatâs the crux of the issue.
Every single undergrad I have met at my UC who has wanted to get into research has gotten there, regardless of their path.
Thatâs great, but it also doesnât account for the selection bias at playâhow many of those students struggled for months to secure a position, and how many simply gave up? At UCs, even the smaller labs are still competitive, and plenty of qualified students donât get in, or end up doing grunt work that doesnât translate into meaningful research experience. At CSUs, on the other hand, access to research isnât a privilege that you have to fight for, but a given if you put in the effort. That immediate and consistent access can be more valuable in the long run than spending years just trying to get a foot in the door.
Many CSU research projects are relatively small-scale due to funding limitations, whereas at UCs, even undergraduates can contribute to major, high-profile work that gets published in top journals.
While UC labs may work on high-profile projects, that doesn't mean undergrads play a meaningful roleâmany just do routine tasks. At CSUs, research may be smaller in scale, but students often take on real responsibilities, from designing experiments to publishing papers. And CSUs do secure research grants, meaning undergrads still have access to funded projects and opportunities to get publishedâoften with more hands-on involvement than their UC counterparts.
CSU students may have more immediate access to faculty and potentially earlier research opportunities, but they sometimes miss out on the depth and rigor of research environments that UCs have.
That really depends on the field. Yes, some UC labs work on groundbreaking projects with massive funding, but that doesnât mean every undergrad actually gets to contribute in a meaningful way. A lot of UC undergrads end up doing routine lab maintenance rather than conducting real research. Meanwhile, at CSUs, undergrads are much more likely to take on leadership roles in projects, design experiments, and even get publishedânot because the research is inherently lower quality, but because thereâs simply more room for them to grow.
Thatâs pretty cool! I havenât heard of that specifically but thatâs really great for exploration. Sometimes, weâll have journal clubs you have to apply for with labs that are recruiting which basically guarantees you a spot and we have a minor that places you in a lab as well
W prof
My boy Pranav in the house
Btw, apologies if some of this does not make sense and/or is disorganized. It's 1am and I'm a bit tired lol.
(If I don't respond, I haven't diedâI just fell asleep đ)
Thereâs a lot done at ucs to increase accessibility in research, especially in underrepresented fields. Programs like PEERS, SPUR, CARE, MARC, Bioscience scholars, and more are programs just in the life sciences.
Smaller labs are not competitive, even if you have 0 research experience and they are not explicitly going out of their way to recruit undergrads. That is where the competition comes from, which is why cold emailing can be successful if the lab is planning on recruiting. As long as you are dedicated and are able to show interest in the research, many labs are willing to take you regardless of your experience levels. I think you are generalizing UCâs research experiences into one as grunt work can be done anywhere. I am sure what you are saying regarding CSUs is true, but I believe research at UCs is a given if you put in the effort as well. Whether that is networking with your friends or professors, emailing, or another method, you will find something. I understand not everyone has the time for this, but if they cannot spend time to find a lab, perhaps they do not have the time to be in a lab since they have other priorities, which is completely understandable as well.
Again, I think you are generalizing into one UC research experience. Many undergrads, again, do lead projects, coauthor papers, and take on âreal responsibilities.â
^
Youâre all good dw!
Ultimately, every research experience will be different regardless of where you are. I believe that if you show initiative, you will most definitely succeed at a UC
I also believe if you have niche interests, a UC will likely be better suited because it will probably have some sort of research in that field
I have some very niche interests and I was still able to find something similar enough, which I likely wouldnât have found at a CSU
Not just in research, even academics. UC literally encouraged me to explore fields outside of my major. That's how I was able to take Econ/Finance classes as a CENG major and literally got hooked on them
damn we got a full ass debate here at 1 30 am
It's Saturday morning lol
fair
Good luck on UCSD though @strange cloud
Still 1:30 am though lol
dude i would commit on the spot
if ucsd takes me from their waitlist
is it ranked
as in?
I agree! UCLA has this one major only offered at one other school. I would have never considered this major anywhere else for obvious reasons
Nope
Not really. It's more dependent on whether your major or undeclared has space
if you get in, then they'll try to put you in to your higher preferenced colleges
hopefully atmospheric science or probability and statistics clutches up
i have hope tho cuz not a lot of ppl apply in atmo sci
Atmospheric Sciences is an uncapped major I think. You should be better off...
same thing with prob and stats but that major is probably full
I think that major is half DSC wannabes and the other half is Math-Econ people
Sorry for the diss, I just had to lol
lmao
i wanna do a mix of ds + atmospheric sci
You could do Atmos Sci major + DS minor
my first choice was ds and second choice was oceanic and atmospheric sci
or vice versa
i wanna focus on ds/stats due to the volatility of the meteorology field in the current administration
there isnt an atmo minor somehow
idk
isnt a minor just when you take a major and hack off some class requirements
Dude I did a Finance internship as a Chemical Engineering major. You never know how your major may play a role in your career. Maybe analyzing a lot of data sets of atmospheric data could help you land a Data Science Job.
Nah it's more of an abridged major.
oh!
But you're free to take more classes than the minor minimum requirements
basically yeah
well
if ucla doesnt clutch up
im committing to uw for now
and the logo for the uw ultimate team is uncanny bro
look at ts
Honestly though, I think UCSD WL is an achievement in this day and age. UCSD's gotten so competitive the last couple of years that I don't think my high school stats would land me an admit now
literally a trident
like come on
i do admit a husky with a trident goes hard
I'd honestly love a bear with one though
has stats really gotten that popular
Ngl I love bears.
ye
i thought that itd be a pretty niche major since most people go data sci
Everyone and their mom wants to do DS one way or another...
CS wannabes=DS. DS wannabes= Stats
wait me too i did stats bc i hate cs
i like cs im just not good at it
but statistics math
Engineering ruined any love I had for math
All I can see are Diff Eqs
I learned a bit of SQL
man

The fact that these programs exist highlights the underlying issueâwithout them, breaking into research at UCs can still be an uphill battle due to the sheer volume of students competing for spots. Cold emailing can work, but success depends on whether a lab is actively recruiting, and many proactive students still face rejection.
Iâm not saying that all UC undergrads are stuck doing grunt work (I have friends at UCLA who lead projects and coauthor papers) but those opportunities are often concentrated among the most competitive and well-connected students. At CSUs, research involvement isnât something you have to fight for; itâs actively encouraged from the start, with direct, experienced faculty mentorship and fewer barriers to entry.
I also disagree with the idea that if a student canât dedicate time to finding a lab, they wouldnât have time to be in one. Searching for research isnât the same as doing research, and requiring students to grind for access naturally excludes those without extra time for networking and cold emailing (e.g., those who need to work a job to attend college).
My argument isnât that CSUs are inherently a better system or that UC students get a bad research experience. Itâs that the skill ceiling at CSUs can actually be higher because students have more opportunities to take on leadership roles, drive their own projects, and gain meaningful hands-on experience without waiting years for a meaningful opening.
Statistical Thermodynamics is a b***h and a half
So much that the math itself doesn't really make sense
meteorology
that is
a solid 85% of meteorology is thermodynamics
im a bit cooked
plus the stats major
dont forget about math+cs majors
they are the tryhard cs wannabes
i alted poli sci data analysis for the 2nd alt choice
yep
ICAM isn't actually much computing.
you're better off with Stats
oh really?
Hopefully you won't deal with entropy much
tbf i applied as a fine arts major to all my reaches with the intention to switch
unless a lot of mfs wanna do atmospheric science in the big 2025 i have a shot at getting off the waitlist
did u get wl
i believe đ
there is entropy in atmo
just not the entropy you think of
like
UCSD Atmospheric Sciences is actually a very well acclaimed program. We have Scripps for a reason lol
idk how to explain
I know
I'm literally taking Stat Thermo right now. Grad edition
i presented at a conference at scripps there last summer bro fym they waitlisted me
it was meant to be
I don't know what to say at that point
this is likeme wantign to do physics after watching oppenheimer
getting hit by 15 atmospheric rivers every winter convinced me to do meteorology
real
plus weather channel and my local news
That movie was so good lol. I was out of state for my internship and I was bored out of my mind. It was the last weekend too before I flew back to California so I decided to watch a movie before I left. Best choice of movie ngl
bill martin and steve paulsen my goats
with the current state of affairs + global warming i think it has great potential
dont forget mark tamayo and jim cantore
right omg
the trump admin is killing noaa bro
I loved and still love Weather Channel
new favorite airplane movie
^
bro ice pilots was my comfort show
yeah but once we grad it might not be republican
so more funding
Bro I was jamming "Ain't no love in Oklahoma" and "Out of Oklahoma" all the way during my walk back home from the theater
im kinda screwed too i wanted to go into research but its being defunded
my internship advisors at noaa ncep are scared they have to pause operations due to a govt shutdown
Hurricane Hunters was mine. Along with Strangest Weather on Earth...
wait did you watch it 4d i wsih i could do that
Nah standard lol
at the same time a severe weather outbreak is killing people in the dixie alley
i watched it in a long ahh plane ride
omg dont forget weather gone viral
That was a great show lol
plane ride i mgiht be stupid ** flight
i might have been too little for hurricane hunters
The goat of 2013 Weather Channel
dude
Hurricane Hunters was something else... especially for a plane buff like me
the soundtrack too
the storm alert update music goes inexplicably hard
same thing with the winter storm update
I loved Twisters... definitely up there in my favorite movies list along with Top Gun
i wanna watch the first one idk if its as good
I was literally hooked on Weather Channel when we had Tropical Storm Hillary hit California a couple years back
i watched twisters like 2x in the same sitting it was so good
that was fun
i think the san fernando valley got a couple nados
dude that was me with the ones in florida last year
YES. I watched that movie twice in theaters + multiple times on planes. It still looks fresh everytime I see it
I literally dragged my friends and my parents to watch it IN THEATERS
color grading of that film is candy
Nah I was there for the Engine noises in theater sound...
There's just some magic listening to afterburner on stereo sound
i do photography so i always pay attention to composition and cinematography in general
Idk the color shading was more orangish than usual
Definitely suited well for the desert scenes
Homage to the original
definitely influenced my photography style for a while too
i was making all my photos warm even when they werent supposed to be
I live close to MCAS Miramar. If you know you know...
JET ENGINE SOUNDS
dude at the conference one day (it was a 4 day long conference) i saw a couple ospreys just chilling off scripps pier
(i went on scripps pier too)
osprey as in the aircraft
Yeah I've seen the lot. Hornets, F-35s, saw a couple of F-16s, F-22s once. Nighthawks paid a visit once in 2020
@runic grail
@runic grail
đ
Yeah Ospreys are pretty common. Same with the CH-53s. F/A-18s and F-35s are also pretty common. Even caught some aggressor F-5s I think 2 days ago. KC-130Js are also in the area đ
LMAO
wowo
not a massive avgeek like u but planes are very cool
im more of a trains person
basically if it runs on a track i think its cool
dude i wanna see one of those F-5s so bad
they're so cool
Maybe come to the airshow we have every September. They bring a couple out from Yuma
Don't think they have them based here in Miramar
Oh yeah fun fact... another reason why I chose UCSD is it's proximity to Miramar. Pretty much have an airshow everyday with the amount of military air traffic that flies over campus.
what does this mean
does this mean he got blocked from the thread
LMAO
real
why is this so intimidating da heck
Looks like a boring educational game for kids 3-7
does anyone know if uci scholarship comes out later or have they already come out
When do LA and Berkeley come out?
Berkeley decision date been on the portal
probably 21st
the button unironically is so clickable
what is it
i don't have my portal set up
27th
so ivy day
yuh
Can someone explain the CHC waitlist? Does everyone get it?
day 2 of manifesting i get off the uci waitlist
day 8 of manifesting i get off the ucd waitlist
Is the UCI honors college somewhat hard to get into?
Any UCLA decision date predictions? I just wanna get rejected already so I can know where I'm going lol
probably next fri
uc dragging it atp đĽ
They tryna act special
Can i go 9/9? Iâm 6/6, but berkeley and la might f me up
đim 0/3 rn i might go 0/6
Bruh uci ruined my chances at a sweep
i'm 2/5 can i go 9/9
didnt apply ucsc but im 6/6 hoping 8/8 (ucla & berk)
my access is restored
Man getting rejected twice in a row sucks.
worse part was SD and Irvine were 30 minute intervals. đ
ikr
Dw, youâll get in!
Yo do ya'll think its worth it to submit an appeal?
for irvine and sd
or am i coping...
I was thinking about a waitlist appeal is that even a thing thođ
for which school
some might have it
UCSD
lemme check
Nope.
they said you can only appeal if you get rejected
anyone know if i get waitlisted at ucsd will affect ucla and ucberkeley decisions
like is it an indicator or nah
As someone who did appeal, I say sure
U never know
cant hurt
Welp time to go starting to dig up random shit i forgot to say on the uc application. đ¤ˇââď¸
what was ur UC GPA
i only have one in my hs grades portal
oh wait
i mean the weighted & capped one
bc isnt that one like max 4.40
ig my portal only calcs that
Backup for if i get rescinded frfr
holy shit lmao
???
is ucsd wl ranked
There always was hope
Use this: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
ok ngl i thought it was like 20% wl acceptance rate for some reason
at least theyre better than davis
nvm it is
thats fall 2023 tho tbf
wait whats this then
idk this yr their cds isnt out yet
why are the numers so different
id assume its the same
Dayum this goes crazy
oh ficm that was irvine
On the ucsd website it says the waitlist isnât ranked itâs based on institutional needs
does it say if what rank we are for waitlists tho
lowk irvine infested with intl and oos premed applicants, tough for california students
Irvine is a pretty small school ngl. I used to live close to UCI and the entire campus is a giant circle
is ucsd also considered a mid uc?
One of the top pnes
Third bear
After Berkeley and La
Your first point is invalid considering CSUs have them as well. I think this is becoming a very repetitive conversation so I think we can just agree that you should decide if a CSU or UC is better for you based on what kind of academic, social, and extracurricular experience you are looking for
Nah
not according to uc berkeley :)
UCLA whereâŚ
AYEEE UCSD
No wonder we got cookedđ
Ucsd said 160k
For sd rejection letter they said 160k
đ¤ĄđŤ
Including transfers
Ahh
sd over la is crazy work
is getting both uci and ucsd a good sign for ucla and berk?
they're all independent
i heard ucla cares most about weighted/weighted capped gpa is this true?
they said in the waitlist faq that it isnt so idk
oh my capped is 4.20
Capped is weird ngl
Why they do this
ucsd got 160k this year so ucla def got 175k
Yeah UCLA and UCSD are the first and second most applied to universiites in the country
GPA don't mean jack shit bro
can everyone who got into ucsd get into ucla so i can have a chance at wl
GPA ain't even allat
lmao ik people here who got into ucla but chose ucsd
Beaches over city
A lot more people here who got into berkeley
but chose sd
valid
bumass school berkeley
ik someone who went to cal day cuz she was planning on berkeley and everything
Went to cal day
Fucking hated it
Committed to ucsd
Depends what u want to do
If you're intending to go into medicine and you got into UCSD but don't choose UCSD you are stupid
Out of schools in the UC system
i should cut down my hope for ucsd waitlist
We just passed a bill to raise our fees by like $2 in turn we got extended time for the trolley and more access to stuff
please give it to internationals
Trolley access is until midngiht or sum
Intls gotta pay their own stuff
Thats fire
Wait i gotta apply to this
Smh
Another app đ
man UCI had a 56% accceptance rate for OOS engineering kids and i still got rejected
cant believe it
Ur from Ontario?
No
how do i find csu to uc transferable courses bruh
I donât think ur reading the acceptance rate right
Just go cc đ
If ur tryna transfer
nah
wym
Why go to csu if ur gunna transfer ultimately
my parents wont let me
Uci is hard to get into
i have a better option oos
Then Iâd lowk do uc to uc transfer
yea true
but its like 65k a year
I think thereâs better guidance there
yeah
i didnt get any ucs except merced riverside and sc đ
and im doing aero, so riverside sc dont have it
Considering SAT is straight up erased. yeah
my gpa is strongest thing in my app and ive gotten 6/6 so far and 3 regents scholarships
Iâve seen ucsc to berk and my friend is at ucr going to uci or ucsd
like i woulda had a higher gpa if i didnt take so many ap's and honors đ
my gpa is down the drain and i still went 3/3 đ
Ya itâs unfortunate
3 regents is crazy
what was it
tbh i was surprised i even got waitlisted from UCI and not rejected bc my uw gpa is like a 3.7-3.8
Who knows berk might come through
Same.
but i got rejected
the thing is ucsc doesnt have aerosapce so like wont transfering be hard then? from like computer engineering to aerpspace engineering?
LMAO 3.75 UC GPA is not getting into berk ieor đ
i only took APs and IB since hs, its around 3.5 UW
Oh fck ur doing engineeeing and trying to transfer?!
rn my best option is UMD
whats ur uc capped
yeah
Who knows
Bro
4.19 uc gpa not getting me in berk engineering bro its over
UC GPA DOESNT MATTER
Mine was like 4.4 I think
wdym
it does tho
do these colleges not want my oos tuition??
ong bro
IDK WHY UC GPA IS A THING IT IS SO STUPID
whats wrong with it đ
i'm too lazy to calculate my uc gpa
Highkey idk id personally do cc and transfer engineering is much harder
Ok. đ
buddy no it don't gpa is literally not as important as anyone thinks
Itâs so hard đ
Do we look like we care?
in the common data sets its literally listed as very important
đ ay if avaneesh can transfer from oos into a impacted major at ucsd
Are you seriously looking at the common data set
yeah i am
Donât bring him up
surely.
"very important" i promise they throw that word around everywhere
surley
surely
UCSD is possible but berk has such strict rules for engineering transfers
Itâs so tuff
gpa is like 1/4 of the story bro
oh i want ucsd lmao
1/8th
im not tryna transfer to berk
Yeah more like 1/5 ngl
Uci is def possible as well Iâd say
1/5.5
my uc gpa was 3.7 bro and a 4.0 W
yeah im fine w uci or ucsd
almost same as mine
look at ucsd
they dont throw it around too much
i applied environmental design as my alt major at berk bc applying engineering is pretty much an auto reject for me there đ
I go to UCSD and I got almost straight Bs my sophomore year
god damn
same here
Herman goes to ucla and got like 6 Cs
and i got rejected
Who gaf abt gpa
Ya idk cuz u will have to look at some articulation agreements and ensure all courses match up as well
yeah bc progression in academics is taken into consideration
Ik 4.0 mfers who got rejected ucsd
yeah i couldnt find anything on assist
So many 4.0 people
ur mom.
yeah cuz everyone has 4.0+ these days
If you got your Bs everywhere who cares bro
my mom
Bro died and got revived as his UC 5 đ
the colleges that rejected me
Generally for engineering itâs like calc 1 2 3, Lin algebra, chem, and maybe some cad class
If you're getting rejected from UCs it probably wasn't your GPA unless you got like straight Cs
oh deadass đ i can waive a lot out with ap credits
maybe my ecs
Then u might be able to do one year transfer
to be fair the number of people who get into a uc with a 3.7-3.99 uc gpa is statistically 1/2 or 1/3rd less than the people with 4.0+
ill see i wanna go to uni for 4 years tho
not tryna graduate early and go in corporate world
đ
I mean u wonât be necessarily graduating early just transferring early
Sure cuz those nerds r tryhards but i'm saying if you have a lower gpa it's not the end and probably not why you got rejected
same
oh ucsd said they only accept transfers at junior level
so like
yeah but tbh you might not survive the cutoff. i sure as hell didn't
if you get most your credits done
agreed but astronomically high gpas surely get taken into consideration
i mean i gotta see
There is no cutoff
i need 60 transsferable uc credits from sjsu
does anyone know how u can find umm what the freak. the uci financial aid package or does it come out later
My uc gpa is pretty high and i still got wl from uci so it goes crazy
no idea been trying to find it
I have a UCLA friend who got 11 Bs or something in hs or something
my entire school got wl bro
Nothing is a constant raaaah
i got wl ucla with 8 Bs
what major?
Don't they look at a bunch of the lower gpa first and start cutting them off starting from 3.0s?
like major plays a role too
L&S
or was that in the past
i got into ucsd bio w this gpa bro
what major in it?
oh dang
bio at ucsd is a selective major and gets your application scrutinized mroe
ucsd is very good for bio and all
doesn't matter
pretty crazy ngl
great biotech scene!
im tryna go there for my masters too
UCSD doesn't consider major unless its impacted
then they'll offer u alt
well i had eng lol
Moral of the story, if you got like a 3.5-3.6+ your GPA probably wasn't the reason you didn't get in. Also UC admissions are insanely rigged and super unfair
yeah
schools js kinda rigged
ig its was prob the fact my ec's were pretty mid
unlike most poeple here i did not infact get crazy awards or make a club.
i dont quite understand what uci thinks they are đ last yr ppl got rejcted uci ucd and got ucb
like how đ
I got rejected UCI
uc irvine is not all that compared to berk la
UCI is historically the one uc that loves playing around with admissions
tons got to ucla/berk but not irvine
last few years
at this point i think UCI waitlist is my best bet bc my oos acceptances hardly gave me aid đĽ˛
my school has been a massive feeder for berk tho
prolly cause proximity
but not sure
berk and uci r the only two that flat out rejected me and are the most unpredictable ones too
last year alone we had 20 people who reported they comitted to berk
4.6 weighted interned at ucla and have a national highschool rocketry record and ive been rejected from ucd ucsd and uci for engineering tf is going on bro
in my school
dude im in ur same shoes
well except intern
It's so unfair man i'm sorry
i had soem crazy research
Maybe berk got me i do have a lot of social justice experience and i've heard they like that but idek
welp guys i've got cooked by most my decisions. prob cuz my ecs were mid.
ao's def on something LOL
praying on sb now lol
tbh after a certain point they just start drawing lotteries.
hows social life at ucsd if i transfer
is it hard to get
like
i'm blessed enough to have been admitted to such a good school but ik so many from my hs who would have done so well here and got rejected it's just so rigged
adapted
No it's great
how ab transfers
do they fit in well
find groups
and all
my brother went there he said the school is pretty dead you can still find parties and stuff but you have to look really hard
it's literally fine the one thing to say is ANY presitigous university with a low acceptance rate so everyone here was nerds in HS is gonna have losers
LOL
high gpa gunner nerds r losers, you will find losers at any prestigious school.
is it hard to maintain grades there for pre med sake
you mean the ones who no life?
dude icl most people in my hs have cheating scandals going on đ
a lot of people at my school lied on their application
Like academics or relationships
thats insane bruh đ
academics
Prob both
Bruhve
and due to this my ap physics teachers made like 16 versions among all 4 periods on a quiz
someone said their startup company was worth 2 mil
I'm premed and still have my 4.0, one thing about college is that some students will come here with a 4.0 in high school, never got an A- in their life, then come to college and get like 40% on their first test. It's hard to get adapted unless you know what you're doing and how to study.
at my school theres a 17 year old guy tryna get iwth a 13 year old. Don't worry he got jumped. đ
dang
Everyone lies on their application everyone cheated in hs it's normal lol
oh hell no
can you guys jump him again
don't worry we jumped him
can't else he'll die.
Fuck I shoulda lied on my app /j
bro people in ap stats đ the teacher was lazy to make versions so people shared answers and stored it on their ti-84s đ
damn
The problem with these preastigious schools is that you come from being like Top 10% of your high school to being insanely average or even lower tier at the prestigious school you worked your ass off to get into
Did UCs drop
ucr, ucm, ucsc, ucd, uci, and ucsd dropped
uci and sd dropped yesterdat
75% of ucs are done aint they
ucsb drops on the 18th, ucla on the 21st, ucb on the 27th
only ones left is sb berk and la
just waiting on ucla and berk
I think UCSB was waxk last year
oh and sb ig
same im praying one of these got me
My classmate got a ucsb likely
Itâs so over idk ucla please let me in
LMAO valid
i have no hope after my double rejection.
UCLA mid
me too
alr bro js put the fries in the bag
Ay tbh he was going to turn 18 in like the next month so if anything we did him a favor.
oh i see, if you don't mind me asking, what study techniques do you use especially for the harder classes in pre med like o chem and what not
Sent in my job app for my campus McDonaldâs
Dw
oh yeah đ u cudnt even report the 17 year old to authorties
fr (unless they accept me)
good job!
Prayers
Same mine usually sends 15-20 ppl to berkeley but i can think of 20 ppl in my class better than međ
better see that mcdonalds acceptance come thru
Iâll burn your order
lmfao yes
Sent my app for the Taco Bell in the pentagon
yeah i think we get more admits but like not every commits lmao
they can't go if they withdraw. đ
bruh i don't think i'll get UCLA atp
tru mfing sb rejects be getting into ucla
Have hope đđ
There are genuinely ppl who ED and got in and didnt withdraw their uc apps
Its so unreal
davis rejects too
I got rejected from Davis, SD, and Irvine
copium supply is running out.
That better be me
oh yeah lol i know one person who got into their ed and forgot to fucking withdraw đ
sb hasn't even dropped though... 3 days
I donât wanna pay near 100k a year đđ
What's the ranking of the ucs for engineering
nah it's hard to have hope atp, i'm fine with going out of state to UMD and at least I can leave this state finally
Early predictions ykwim
100k a year is actually crazy
do ED schools not inform counselors bruh đ so counselors can js email all the schools the student got in for ed
no they straight up confirmed it.
Northeastern better give me financial aid else Iâm going to cc
very good
all uc's have good engineering
well idk abt merced
merced is growing though
Yeah but tier list of ucs
but they might not get finaid
Should i rather take sjsu or ucsb for mech eng if i get in
Like best to worst
sb
my best choice is sjsu rn
for aero
Sjsu is ok
im only fine w it cause internship
I heard SJSU has good recruitment for CS
It rlly does
like lemme get that lockheed intern bro
and engineering
even nasa
But theyâre usually startup companies
yeah
Cs is sjsus thing yeah
Iirc
all these top tech companies recruit sjsu students
I could commute there too
Hmm ig so
me too
The campus sucks ass
but im dorming
not that bad
ngl i've lost hope for the rest of the uc's if i got rejected from all but riverside...
Idk it gives me depression every time I gotta go there
its decent
cause its like in a bustling city
no rural areas
đ
True ig js not my preference
Dropping morals for bank ic
you got it!
đđđ
theres nasa too
4 years of engineering will probably break anyone taking the moral route ngl
LOL
the location is its appeal
ANOTHER VICTIM OF UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO
Isnât it the big flat open space w that big ass metal dome thing
yea
ive been to it on a field trip LMAO
in elementary school
The ressearch center
its not that big
LMAO
Drive past it on 101
not too big but I js stare at it when I drive past
Nahh js to skate around
oHHH
Yea they have public
Right next to sjsu I think
Im so used to living in a dead town that all my hobbies arent associated with going to places
I skated there competitively till this year p much
i think i went there for skating lessons
Itâs rlly nice not too cold inside
OH
i rmbr that
HAHAHA
bro
That place
We used to go to the aviation museum for field trips
Is it nice? I lowk havenât been there
i forgot last time i went there was like 2018 or 2019
never been
one time in 4th grade my school took us to a grabage center
cause we were on some preserving the env unit or some
i take o chem in the fall. iâm currently in the gen chem sequence and i do a bunch of practice problems, take GOOD NOTES in class, and make sure to ask questions and use ChatGPT so much to explain hard topics to me
o chem đ
oh my god
my ap chem did a mini lesson on o chem after the exam for fun
i was locked out after the first slide bro
when i saw lewis structures
Ight bet, thanks for the advice man
dawg that's like barely o chem đ
i hated lewis structures
deadass it was my least fav
thing ever
deadass got an 83 in chem last yr bcz of ochem đ
Highschool???
Junioryear????
Ochem????
yes
Oh hell nah
intl in canada our ap courses are weird
canadian ap curriculum is based off of our provincial curriculum not the college board
Huh
so idk if its in the college board's ap chem but it was def in ontario's
its weird up here bro we have pre-ap and whatnot it's a whole mess esp for admissions
nah, exam is written by our teachers based off of our provincial curriculum
Thats lowkey not ap
curriculum generally follows the college board but it can be tweaked
Thats just chem on steroids
yeah ap also spans four years for us
sigma bonds my aass
our teacher got preggy too so self learning ochem railed my grade
Why
itâs just the way the curriculum is lol
They should stop
makes college easier!
Makes life harder
tbf i heard first year chem is brutal so im not complaining that i got a head start
im ngl my act score is the only thing saving me from getting rejected everywhere
i should've taken ap chem im ngl
Saying this in the uc channel is âŚ
im gonna have to do chem gen eds and get murdered đ
light work you're sigma u got this
true
check if your college accepts credits
im taking biochem for premed so 3 yrs it is for me
my first ochem test will be fearing me đ
If my 5 is worth nothing imma crash out
i'm signed up for 7 ap exams this year but i'm going to drop any that aren't accepted for credit
UCs really hate ap bio
ap exams are kinda scammy in general unfortunately
I never took ap bio or chem i went physics all the way đ
so i can transfer to ucsd!
WHY ELSE WAS IT MY DREAM COLLEGE BRO
LOL
i was in love
Not me with a 3.86 uw gpa and a 4.55 w getting waitlisted
me too
I keep getting them on my fyp after i got rejected
I hate the Bay area
me getting rejected
SAME
ITS TEASING ME
My school so competitive I hate it
its making me wanna transfer even more more
whadya have rn then
