I know I'm late to this thread but that's just not true. Clinical research is widely seen as "softer" than bench work (cell biology, etc). The most worthwhile and impressive research to have on your resume for med school applications is robust animal models. There's a reason why burnt out med students frequently quit their previous lab work and do clinical research instead once they get in.

i'll take a look at some wet lab opportunities but i'll see if this program also offers some opportunities, someone who works for the program says there may be some wet lab positions if you really want them

You are correct that you have a higher chance of getting published with clinical research. A good way of saying it is that bench work has a lower floor but a much higher ceiling. It's up to you whether you think you would be able to wrangle a meaningful paper out of bench work. However, most students in top programs don't have publications at all. The adcom will look at your CV, essays, and your PI's recommendation instead.

ofc yeah research is not required but i've already started since i'm a research associate volunteer at ucsd health

atm i just collect data from patients no publications or anything but it's gonna evolve into actually doing the research rather than collecting the data

I just screen the ED track list on EPIC, find patients who match open studies, and go and survey them/collect info regarding their disease/condition/etc

Enroll them in studies if applicable

I like what I do, it's different from generic hospital volunteering which is what I did all of hs
