Nuh uh, but being serious you are significantly more likely to get in (and enjoy the place you're going to commit to) if you focus on applying to fewer schools that you like (and spending a lot more effort into those applications) rather than shotgunning to a whole bunch of schools with very little individual effort for each school (and you may not even like the school in question)

I guess you're right. I guess it depends on how much the essays and application part matter over my raw stats and ecs, because otherwise due to applicant overlap it's inevitable that chances of getting into 1/20 is higher than just 1/10

As for likiing specific colleges, my needs and requirements for college isn't that high. I'm not gonna apply to every single t20 like i could hardly care about notre dame for example (cuz of the high amounts of religiousness and catholicism) or UCs (cuz i'm not wealthy enough to afford them), but in general my standards are pretty low and I can see the best in most of the other t20s.

He does not have any of that. But that doesn't mean he's any less or more talented because not only is it a matter of context but not everyone has the same generic interests of doing olympiads and research just to get into a top school. MIT saw that AND saw his talent, which is why they let him in

Basically, in college, many unis offer transfer programs where you study abroad in a different location that's affiliated with them (like they have other local unis affiliated with them) so you can experience studying and living in another country. Many times it's at little to no additional cost, too.

almost certainly true. not speaking on MIT per se, but Ivies definitely base their brand off selectivity

of course recently they're all about inclusion and access but for the longest time, selectivity was a very explicit part of the Ivy brand

I’ve talked to economists about this, and they cannot countenance an explanation for why a school might remain smaller beyond “they must be trying to become Veblen goods”

as opposed to something like: “there are qualitative distinctions that change at scale; you cannot in fact scale small communities, it is a contradiction in terms”

also, the effects of MIT are not (I claim) primarily something to do with the education; it is mostly about elite signaling at the hiring and grad school level

but there’s two ways to solve that. One way is to invest billions and billions in expanding MIT. Another is to tell companies to recruit at UMass Amherst (my Alma mater)

or getting grad faculty admissions to make their opinions something other than reproducing their own elite intellectual kinship networks
