That being said.. the tone of that email is so positive that it feels like that might actually be a good sign. I wouldn't read too much into it though

Two things

• There's a good possibility they just haven't read your application yet
• Even if they did read it and thought you'd be a great candidate or whatever, they probably don't want to hint at it

(Also, a lot of the time, generic responses are just because it's a commonly asked question - I remember I once got something literally copied verbatim from their website (that still didn't quite answer what I was asking lol))

Basically things where you can give a blurb of text a name and use that to easily copy paste it

For example maybe I have a snippet named “extension” where using it copy pastes a message about my hypothetical school’s application deadline extension

And applicants who email in will receive that as I see fit

I disagree. There’s virtually no chance you can be genuinely passionate about more than four things in high school to the degree you’d be proud to showcase them on your application (and that’s not even counting summer activities which are separate and in addition to the four). Having ten slots just pushes people to cram in more superficial, cookie-cutter commitments they claim to be “passionate” about. MIT doesn’t buy into that nonsense—they want to see YOU, not some super impressive robot. They know no real human feels deeply connected to ten different activities, and pretending otherwise just dilutes who you really are.

Sure, it can be annoying to narrow it down to just four when most other applications let you list ten, but make no mistake: that’s not to make things harder.
