Each school has standards for what placement AP gets you. At least in my experience, it wasn't worth that much in terms of replacing course credits, it's more for skipping classes.

The thing that especially touched me with the scandal was the fake portrayal of SEN Kids (specialized education needs)
Because when these systems are abused by preppy rich kids, the kids that actually suffer from physical/learning disabilities face the consequences because their credibility might come in question.
In those cases as an individual, I would much rather a university be transparent with its preference to sideline certain academic requirements to admit high interest candidates (legacies, etc) instead of trying to fraudulently fulfil those requirements.
As bad as it sounds, it is more honest, and more humane than having photoshopped pictures of athletes or other proctors taking a test.
