#REACH, SAFETY AND TARGET SCHOOLS FOR ROBOTICS AND ENGINEERING Programs!
275 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Georgia tech is nowhere near a hidden gem
its very well known nationally
and very competitive to get into
One thing to keep in mind is that Engineering undergraduate programs in the US are HEAVILY standardized by ABET
You mentioned Michigan for a state, so I'd have to recommend the University of Michigan for engineering
but
I completely get your finaid circumstances
and so it likely wouldnt be the best option for the cost
even as an instate student, i am going to be having to take out substantial loans
am stuck in ur typical middle class spot where i dont get any aid but my parents are contributing anything - but enough of my situation
for a great safety I would also recommmend Michigan Tech
it is way up in the UP (where I am from) and if you want a city atmosphere or not terrible weather, then its not for oyu
but it has a very cooperative and I know plenty of really smart students and great people going there
also if you are a top student you are pretty much guaranteed to get paid research positions with their top professors - super easy to build rapport with them
people sleep a lot on school like Mich Tech because it isnt rated crazy high like UM but they have (I believe) one of the largest engineering job fairs there is, and that is spreading into their CS program - if you like the midwest and want jobs here, Tech would honestly be a really good choice
every company within Michigan, Wisconsin, and Chicago area knows about Tech and it has a great reputation
Northwestern may be a good choice, but idk how good their engineering is
if you could get in (reach), their aid would be very nice to you
what's that?
I actually need good amount of financial aid
I heard that Ut Austin has really good engineering and cs programs and an exceptional maths faculty, but will they offer me about 85 to 90% financial aid?
ABET is an organization that accredits engineering and CS programs
They pretty much dictate the majority of what is taught in engineering programs
So for engineering degrees in the United States, what you will learn is 80-85% the same at every accredited engineering program
With the difference being electives
It's not as common for CS degrees as software engineers typically aren't the ones signing off on things
For Michigan you could also look into Kettering University
You have to do 5 internships to graduate and 8 are baked into your 4 year plan of study
There are plenty of research opportunities, but most are automotive or manufacturing related (even the AI research)
i see, thanks a lot sir
but can I still get some more university suggestions
Oh definitely
i want to at least apply to about 25 unis
plus I don't want to go to a state that has very harsh winters
I've seen snow that has buried cars from bottom to top in Michigan
but do they provide finaid?
You have to check their website
But for public schools, typically no if you aren't a resident of that state
ohk
Merit scholarships are a thing at some
But you'll likely have better luck with private universities
btw does winning olympiads guarantee a place in top schools like Umich?
No
so it's all about the overall profile i see
Nothing guarantees admissions at US universities unless they have an auto admit program like Arizona State does
yea a lot of students from my school went there in the last couple of years, but I want better unis
But typically auto admit schools aren't competitive to get into
yea
ASU is a top 40 university for engineering in the US
damm
How hard a place is to get into doesn't directly correlate with how good it is
okay
Especially with engineering
can u tell me how should I search for unis in the first place?
You pretty much learn the same content everywhere
yea u said it before
about 90% is same everywhere
Id suggest looking into places that offer merit based scholarships
University of Alabama has pretty generous merit based scholarships for example
okay but isn't that a bit of a gamble?
ohk alright
You can check each university's website for the exact details
If cost is a significant concern, it's best to stay flexible
No degree is worth excessive debt
Remove Purdue and UIUC and UW Madison
These are public’s
They won’t help you much with aid
Yep
so public uni's don't offer aid to international students?
Remove the public’s on your list
Private universities are your best bet
The aid they offer will not make you have to only pay 15k
alright noted down
yes I will look at private ones from now onwards
Location/Region: I would prefer the East or West Coast, or in Texas, Michigan...
I don't want to go to a state that has very harsh winters
🤣
no, they are subsidized by their respective state and likely receive federal funding in some way - they want to allocate that money to the tax payers who funded them
that is, the typical goal of any state university is to serve its state's people by offering an affordable education - some state's institutions just happen to be ranked much higher than others, attracting out of state students and internationals in the process
namely the UCs, UMich, UW - Madison, etc..
got it
btw is Niche a trustworthy ranking system?
also I really love Boston Uni, but will they provide me 80 to 90% finaid?
I looked into rose hulman, another uni i liked but they would only provide around 28k finaid, which left me with 45k/year ☠️
Pretty much all prevalent ranking systems are nonsense
is there any detailed government site that has all details regarding alumni salary and placement %, also that measures quality of education?
Id advise not using them as a factor, especially for engineering
Quality of education is too subjective to numerically rank
yeah tbh
You also have to take alumni salary with a grain of salt
You can't use it for direct comparison
Since the cost of living varies wildly across the US
Joe making 80k a year in Alabama has more spending power than Steve making 95K in NYC
🫡
Though there are a lot of good, reliable numbers on there
Also keep in mind most colleges charge a fee to apply
yea ik that
UW Madison gave me great aid (OOS) that covered everything.
They also offered an additional scholarship, which I declined
from everything I have heard that is not the norm, but good for you
everyone oos ik that applied got jack and they had low SAIs
that's maybe because u had better profile than me
but yeah OP, dont pay too much attention to rankings
it is for the better
dont get caught up in them or in prestige or any of that shit
go where ever is the cheapest
btw can anyone confirm whether Illionis tech is a good school or not?
Illinois tech is mid tbh
Best IL schools r northwestern, uchi, and uiuc
only solid numbers comparison there is (the college scorecard) - all otehr rankings are arbitrary
but I heard they have good co-op?
for engineering especially
find somewhere where you get good aid, has a good alumni network, and has a program with features you enjoy
that is all that matters
especially for engineering
because of the ABET standardization that other person mentioned
What makes it diff than any other co-op program?
If u have a good reason, then there u go
Uiuc would be that for IL
Amazing network, rly good aid if ur in state at least
sure there are better ranked options, which are likely better schools, but if someone found something they liked in IL Tech then I dont see anything wrong with there
i am international student
Then how do you know what states you prefer?
Illinois is also very cold
i will manage
if OP doesnt want snow or anything
What makes IL or Michigan different from northeast school
oh well if you are considering UIUC, IL Tech, etc... then look at UMich
How can u possibly know which states u prefer
Yeah same bc I’m from chicago lmao
By limiting states, u limit hella good options
I personally would go to UMich over any other school in the midwest, even Northwestern
(and I am XD)
then again that is because of so many personal reasons and that should in no way affect what you want to do
ok I will keep that in mind
but keep your search broad
I refused to apply to NW
Too close to home and quarter system
The calendar year is so bad for internships
Also can’t see friends during off times
Start in September end in mid June
still hoping Dartmouth comes through (waitlist)
because it would be pretty much free
and I am gonna be paying like 22k a year as an instate UMich student
😭
btw does temperature drop below -20 C in michigan?
Ann Arbor ain’t that north
regularly
NMU? Def yeah
ok thanks
during those days you have online classes right?
wind chill is a thing though
idk
ik in the UP they rarely had snow days at unis
like Michigan Tech and NMU
but that is also the UP
My mom went to NMU
She had 1 snow day in 4 years
U just gotta get urself to class in the snow
UMich has an entire staff running snow plows all day during the winter
so you likely woulnt have any troubles with snow
yeah I mean I have lived in either Michigan and Maine my whole life so snow and winter doesnt bother me but I know one of the big complaints from UMich students is seasonal depression 😂
it just seems so bizaare to me
My cali friends here were stunned
but i get it
I never wore a coat
We r just better
i have like your basic columbia windbreaker sort of thing
or flannel
lots and lots of flannel
Yeah I’ll just do a sweatshirt when it’s cold
same, got me a nice champion UMich crewneck
And handwarmers
i heard umich has the largest stadium or something?
damm
you can be literally anywhere in the world and mentioning UMich will help
V good work life balance
yeah big work hard play hard mentality
if you are doing CS or Eng at UMich it will be tough but very rewarding
also if you dont know exactly what you want to major in, UMich is one of the best schools for that
Umich just took control of my brain
because like 200 of their programs are top 20 in the nation and i thinkj like 75 are top 10
would love to do at least masters's there
Yeah it’s prob the best Midwest school
Imo
Northwestern is great and I think it just depends what someone wants
definetely best public
I meant public but yeah
Northwestern's aid is a HUGE plus for many people
well i gotta get going but moral of this convo OP: find somewhere with a program you like, with cool features, with a good alumni network, with classes you are interested in, etc...
oh and good aid
that may be the most important thing and so you may need to stick to private schools (as in no UMich, UW, etc...)
yeah you ahve a lot of time to decide where you are going to apply so just take your time
Yeah you’re chilling
yea i am willing to come to any state as long as it's safe
yeah you should be fine in that regard
They’re all safe yeah
Columbia will be fine in 5 years but I’d skip it for a bit tbh
New president coming too
yeah many people are severely confused right now and it is just unfortunate
there is a lot going on
alr best of luck in ur search
👋
for co-op, Kettering University and Northeastern University have the strongest programs
co-op programs that arent mandatory and delay graduation are just glorified internships
You can’t say for sure I mean vandy is hard
But u can definitely try
What's the ideal subject for me to major in? I like Maths, Physics and Tech but I'm not passionate about programming(I don't hate it tho). I enjoy creating math models and I'm also interested in robotics. What major should I pursue?
Well CS is much more than just SWE
in fact you may enjoy theoretical CS
at many schools it isnt that difficult to dual major in math and cs
i would take the intro classes of both of those items at any given school
if you like one more than the other than major in that and minor in the other (so the classes you took arent just elective credit)
otherwise you could just dual major
if you arent sure what you want to major in now, then what you ultimately end up majoring in will likely change later
yea I am liking this school
however will they provide me with aid, so that the COA is approx. 25k?
they should have a fin aid calc somewhere
that is about what itd cost me in state so i imagine oos i more
i think it is actually like 35k in stateor somth
they do have a full ride competition you could try for
i used a harvard efc calculator but can't identify which one's the efc
is it the your cost section of this calculator?
yes
