#Narrowing down a math major's college list

So I have to cut down my list to 14 schools (the UCs count as only one school) . Also, I would like some advice on where to EA/REA since ED1 is not an option in my case due to some weird school policies. I have a list of 20 schools rn (counting UCs as one) and I'm wondering which I should eliminate.

  • Location/Region: International, Asian

  • Major: Mathematics

  • GPA/Test Scores: 98.5/100 Cumulative, 1560 SAT (760 RW/800 M).

  • Curriculum: I will likely be taking a lot of graduate level classes and will be pursuing higher education.

  • Size: Not too important, but would like to make a lot of connections in undergrad for research w profs so smaller class sizes might be preferable

  • Costs: Money is not a big issue/No aid, but would like a good ROI

  • Schools You're Currently Looking At:
Reach Reach: UChicago, Columbia, UPenn, Brown, Oxford, Johns Hopkins, Duke, Northwestern
UCs: UCLA, UC Berkeley, UCI, UCSB, UCSD
Other: Umich, CMU, Washu, Georgetown, USC, Gatech, Emory

  • Additional: Perhaps good public transport would be nice, and I would prefer living in the city. I am also applying to safeties in australia so my parents thought that if I dont get into these more prestigious schools, it would just be better to save money and go to a school which would frankly be cheaper (since I have an australian citizenship).

Cut out washu and Emory. Great schools but they're pre-med focused afaik and not too great for maths

#

I'd look into more public schools that aren't reach reach but still reputed for stem like uiuc, UW, uw madison, etc

#

also no hypsm? why not

#

bro i need publics on this chart😔

#

it is not super easy

#

getting into any UC these days as even instate is hard let alone intl

#

and irvine was my favorite 😔

#

did you get into the top ones?

#

damn

#

UCs be unpredictable like that

#

i wouldn't rely on any of the UCs as safeties tho, hard targets at best

#

where are you going?

#

that's crazy

carmine spire
#

congrats

#

are you intl?

#

o yeah

#

that's even better

northwestern is my bae

i idolized them for 3 years because i heard they love demonstrated interest

#

then they rejected me 👺

#

it's ok i still love them in my heart

#

thanks for the response

#

im wondering why u say no to oxford?

#

my coursework is rigorous and i feel like i'm the type of student that the UK prefers (having some undergrad/grad level knowledge in my field)

#

is it really not worth it? even if it means losing a really good candidate

austere marsh
#

i guess i can hope but i dont have the crazy IMO IOI olympiad stuff or sports or i guess societal impact that might be expected

#

maybe i'll put one just for the sake of it

#

basically my choice is either apply oxford or apply ED1 brown

#

which would u rather recommend?

#

oh haha thank you that's good to hear

#

my safeties are australian schools so i guess im looking to actually apply higher rather than lower

#

hmm i actually ended up taking dartmouth out of my original list because i didn't like the location and it worse comparatively worse for math compared to other t20s

@austere marsh since finances arent an issue, id recommend just applying to every single UC in order to have a few more options in the US

Since you're a Math major, want to go to grad school, and prefer smaller class sizes, I highly recommend Williams

#

LACs have good grad school placements for the S and M part of STEM iirc

#

Williams math graduates around 80 students per year so you'll get access to quite a large peer group and the tight-knit environment of an LAC
