I'm not sure where I want to go specifically with CS and I know all have solid CS departments. I might also have an opportunity for full tuition at Cornell/GTech so if that becomes the case I'd also like to know what you'd think.

UMich

Pros

  • In-State Tuition (graduate w/ no debt + already paid off)
  • Love the school, have toured it multiple times and have many friends going
  • Would go in as a sophomore in terms of credits and have the chance to receive an MS as well
  • Close to home!!
  • Tons of Fulbright Scholars which I'm interested in doing after college
  • ABET accredited if I want to go into gov jobs

Cons

  • I'm not sure if being in CoE (chose that because more of my credits convert) would take away from an interdisciplinary education
  • Harder to get research? (I have the opportunity to continue research from high school at a different Michigan school)
  • Environment won't push me as much as Cornell or GTech/Recruiting isn't as competitive
  • Not sure if I can go into quant here?
  • Not super interested in party culture
  • Don't have any family nearby

Cornell

Pros

  • Gorgeous environment
  • CS at Cornell is well regarded/have the chance to do quant if I decide to/Ivy name for grad school
  • Top physics department as well
  • Good chance to pursue Fulbright or Marshall Scholars here
  • Proximity to NYC for recruiting
  • Opportunity to meet lots of new people and double major in STEM subjects
  • Good dining hall

Cons

  • Have not had a chance to tour and won't before the committing deadline
  • Full pay and not extra perks/scholarships so far (I was hoping for Milstein but it didn't work out).
  • Would graduate without loans but it would come with a significant burden to family quality of life.
  • Housing crisis in Ithaca, no guaranteed housing junior and senior year
  • No family nearby + tickets homes are pricey + 6 hour drive back home
  • Won't have many of my credits convert, would have to take CASE
#

GTech

Pros

  • Expensive but reasonable for family to cover
  • Atlanta metro area is warmer and I also have family nearby
  • One of the top departments for CS
  • Recruiting and startup scene is better here

Cons

  • Also hard to do research here?
  • Lack of strong interdisciplinary educational opportunities
  • No perks here as well so far

all 3 are equally good. I'd choose on 2 factors: cost and location

crude vigil
#

I like the location of all three and in terms of cost its umich > gtech > cornell rn

#

i think tiebreakers would be opportunities to do interdisciplinary research and grad school

#

i also want a tight knit community but it isn't a large consideration + a collaborative atmosphere

#

im scared of the weeders at umich though

#

also do ivy connections really help compared to umich alumni network?

#

This is my exact list for CS ๐Ÿ’€
I really like Michigan, but idk if that's worth giving up the ivy name, alumni, and private school.

crude vigil
#

thats my worry too

#

but the cost is way too much and unless appeal works out idk if i can justify it

lime drum
#

ivy name really doesn't matter in real world

crude vigil
#

even for cs recruiting?

scarlet epoch
#

bro

#

go with cornell

#

ivys >> than top 10 cs schools

crude vigil
#

but its like way more expensive

scarlet epoch
#

if it were like

#

the Big 4

crude vigil
#

and i have younger siblings

scarlet epoch
#

heres how the ranking goes

#

Big 4:

CMU
Berkeley
MIT
Stanford

Ivy League:

Top 10-20 CS Schools:

Rest

#

^thats how recruiting goes

scarlet epoch
#

i didn't realize

#

if cost is an issue of course

#

but in terms of opportunities

#

cornell >>>> both of them

crude vigil
#

its full pay ๐Ÿ’€

scarlet epoch
#

which one is cheaper

scarlet epoch
crude vigil
#

umich

scarlet epoch
#

oh

#

simple

#

go umich then

#

ull be happy there to ๐Ÿ™‚

#

great school

#

T3 public too t

#

and great for cs + engineering

crude vigil
#

if the external stuff works out imma head to cornell

scarlet epoch
#

wdym

crude vigil
#

if not im staying at umich

#

i have some scholarship im finalist for

scarlet epoch
#

oh

#

ok yeah wait on that

crude vigil
#

that would cover full tuition

scarlet epoch
#

but ur choice should be between Umich and Cornell then

scarlet epoch
#

so if you get money cornell go cornell if not take Umich

crude vigil
#

but otherwise i don't think i can justify it

#

yeah

#

i just added georgia tech to see if anyone else had opinions on it

scarlet epoch
#

gtech

#

nah

#

gtech == umich

#

so it doesn't matter

#

just those two

#

id even say umich better with their ross school so if ur doing quant u have a better chance at mich

#

but yeah those two

lime drum
crude vigil
#

plus i already know profs and have connections at umich

#

so like it was kind of a no brainer but im also the first one in my family to go to school here

#

so wanted to make sure i got the full picture

#

i heard michigan was super bad with aid oos

sleek hazel
#

Another thing is I've grown up in a small town, so I don't wanna move to another small town in Ithaca ๐Ÿ’€ atleast Ann Arbor is bigger and really close to other big cities

crude vigil
#

but ann arbor is def one of the best places for college

#

I love it there

sleek hazel
crude vigil
#

woah what merit scholarship if you're comfy sharing?

sleek hazel
#

the CoE honors scholarship

#

its like 20K per year for OOS and 10K for in-state, and you need maintain 3.0 GPA

#

while my Cornell aid is full need based
