Int'l student here

SD(Roosevelt college):
pros:
-Great STEM school
-Plenty of research opportunities plus a great STEM network
-LOCATION. Beautiful location and I'd love to be in Cali

cons:
-While I'm totally cool with paying the cost, I still want to be able to say that it's totally worth the cost
-UC Socially Dead.. um yeah that's self explanatory
-City life is lowkey expensive too
-not exactly a con but don't know about the housing situation in Roosevelt

Purdue(WL campus)

pros:
-Powerhouse of research in applied math because of CCAM
-much cheaper than UCSD
-The town doesn't bother me, sounds pretty peaceful
-Overall a highly regarded and esteemed STEM school

cons:
-grade deflation issue(have heard mixed opinions on it)
-the weather's not all that bad tbh but yeah UCSD is still better in that aspect
-the campus is good but it does lose to UCSD by a little
-UCSD's alumni network is somewhat bigger
-just overall slightly lower in prestige than UCSD

have you looked into the ges for roosevelt? heard they're not the best for stem (unless they interest you in which case yahoo)

ive also heard as a cs major that the math department at purdue is to be avoided at all costs... idk if thats the same for math majors tho

As someone that got into both UCSD and Purdue for Applied Math before UCLA came through, my leaning was towards UCSD because their grad school and employment outcomes shattered Purdue’s.

But yes, Purdue is an Applied Math research powerhouse due to CCAM. However, from the research that I have done, Purdue’s math department is not as good as UCSD’s. Also quite a lot of people have complained that Purdue math is really horrible due to the way TAs grade exams

my friends at ucsd say that the main reason the student life gets its rep is bc no parties, greek system or major sports

well i guess my other main comparison seems to be with uiuc which is very similar to purdue

muir isn't like the best engineer college its just that a lot of engineers gun for it

Muir is a good college for GE requirements if you have an already rigorous degree. And the location of dorms is at the west side of campus closer to the ocean.

Sorry was commenting becuase I was a Muir student. Roosevelt buildings I remember to be nice. Better than Thurgood which is a bit south of Roosevelt. My feeling is as an international student they placed you in Roosevelt International House. You'd be a bit futher away from what I think of as campus center. But you'll be closer to the gym and stadium. There are very nice trails around there, and you'd also be placed close to the west side of campus, i.e. the ocean. I used to go trail running in the area of Roosevelt. It's a pretty part of campus. As far as academics for GE, I can't comment.

Yeah sorry I'm very Californian. 😄 It's good to take the opportunities offered you at a good school, etc. even if you're worried about the weather. For example, my kid only got into one CA school, but he's not excited about it. So we're thinking he'll be in midwest or east coast US. Might be a rough adjustment - but it's only 4 years.

as an intl student i got soo many factors to consider rn that weather isnt even close to the top of my list honestly💀
