Schools: CNU, Virginia Tech
Intended major: Data Science and Biology
Similarities: In-state, Public

CNU
School 1 Pros:

  • 10k scholarship that gets me into Honors College and another program unique to the school
  • I have a lot more freedom with my course selection
  • RLLY Nice housing
  • Small Class Sizes (~20 for major-specific)
  • Good weather
  • Research and career opportunities (near military)
  • Great music/theatre program

Cons:

  • People can bring their cars, meaning campus can get kind of dead on the weekends
  • Not D1 sports
  • Small campus
  • Most people drop out of the program I'm in by sophomore year, so if I choose to do the same I dont think I'd want to stay
  • Not a college town
  • Just a very quiet feel, I like an active campus
  • Worried I won't get the "college experience" - programs will require I hunker down academically, and I want to explore my options in college

Virginia Tech
School 2 Pros:

  • D1 Sports
  • Huge campus
  • Great food
  • I've done some research here before and i really enjoyed it
  • Got to stay for a month before and I loved it
  • Science curriculum is stronger
  • Big alumni community
  • Lots of school spirit + weekend life
  • A lot more people = more variety
  • I feel like school-life balance will be better here

VT Cons:

  • HUGE class sizes
  • Getting opportunities will be more competitive
  • Kind of in the middle of no where
  • Gets really cold in the winter
  • No scholarship
  • Housing quality + off-campus housing
  • Kind of far from home :(

Tiebreaking considerations:

  • What both schools are like on a regular day
  • If I could know more about the program Im getting into at Small Public School
  • Is "big" worse overall?

Addendum: I really like big colleges and I love when a school has tons of spirit, it just adds so much life to a place and makes it feel like an actual community. I'm on the quieter side, but I really like meeting new people and I just feel like the Small Public School will feel too monotonous and like I'm just there to work.

Also a virginia resident here. How much is the cost difference and how easily can you afford it? From what you've already said in your post, I would personally choose Virginia Tech.

Also, from my limited knowledge, I don't think the honors college will make much of an impact post-graduation
