Intended major: Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering (specializing in aerospace)
Similarities: Both have a strong emphasis on their STEM majors and are relatively rigorous.

Stony Brook
School 1 Pros:

  • Prime location (woods, ocean is on Long Island), has a direct metro line to New York City, probably one of the best for location
    -Really nice, newly renovated facilities and overall decently modern campus;
    -Is relatively affordable
    -Overall ranked higher than SBU

School 1 Cons:
-I’ve heard student life may not be the best
-I’ve heard it is SUPER rigorous
-It is slightly ranked below CU Mines (although it has drastically been increasing in rank so that may change)
-Gets VERY cold in the winter

Colorado Mines
School 2 Pros:
-I’ve heard the recruitment opportunities are great
-Good weather
-Like SBU, lots of recreational opportunities nearby like mountains, forest, etc. (also next to Denver)
-Ranked slightly higher than SBU as of now
-Is also affordable
-Has specialization in aerospace for my intended major

School 2 Cons:
-Location isn’t as prime as SBU’s
-Is also relatively rigorous (weed-out classes exist here)
-Overall ranked lower than SBU

Tiebreaking considerations:
-Which has superior internship/career/recruitment opportunities for engineering jobs during/after college; this will most definitely define my decision

denver is a rising city too, consider that as well

I also agree with SBU. However even if denver is a rising city, you won't see much change in the 4 years that you are there for

Stony brook isn’t as close to NYC as people think. The train commute is around 2 hours and can be expensive.

yea it can be a pain but at the end, it will be worth it in the long term

@wary bear i’m gonna go with colorado school of mines, as a stem school it’ll likely have more resources for your major and interests

#

another thing to consider is that stony brook has like 4x more students than mines, it’s like 20k vs 5k

#

so mines will probably be more tight knit but you’d be less anonymous

# stark tinsel This part is just not true

possibly... id take your word over mine since im not a stem major but mines has like twice the number of kids in meche compared to stony brook even with being so much smaller, so id say its fair to assume that the department gets a bigger piece of the pie

I think they even offer metro cards
