in other words, instate doesn't matter
no it does very much lmao
what
ucb = 45k a year and dartmouth = 90k a year
and we arent crazy rich to where
money like this is like
meaningless
my parents js sacrified a lot more for my education
ykwim
what are ur career goals?
not fully sure yet
but i wanna get internships in the industry
during my time in c olelge
for sure
u will get that at both which makes this hard if ur not sure what specifically
prob ucb
well also
i havent gotten into dartmouth so this problem coudl be easily fixed
Can you fill out the template
but im just speculating
ok
Thanks
idk because i also have a younger sister too and like
it would be preferable if we still had money left over for her colelge pxpenses too
then yea go ucb
ucb def, its literally a better education for half the price π
ok lil bro
then UCB is ggoing to be a ton less. the schools are also SUPER different. Like II would never consider Cal, and Dartmotuh was my number one
It isn't really an automatically better education just becaue they have a well ranked CS department. They have massively oversubscribed classes. Dartmouth is entirely focused on undergraduate teaching and education
Dartmouth CS. Same opinion as the gt cs vs ucb data science thread. Youβll have a harder time getting past SWE resume screens with a data science degree. And CS is more versatile because you can go into Data science with a CS degree but itβs harder to break into SWE with a data science degree. Also Iβm not sure Berkeley is that much better of a brand name than Dartmouth.
^ I do think it's important to keep in mind what careers you're looking at
If you're doing CS to get into SWE, Berk DS isn't going to help you
However, if you're doing CS for data science and that realm of work, I don't think the cost is worth the Dartmouth degree
Like bg mentioned, the schools are incredibly different too, so that's something to keep in mind
the cost is also really different, so it isn't an obvious choice
I don't want to hijack this thread at all, so lmk if I should create my own, but what about UMich CSE vs Dartmouth CS
Make your own and fill out the template
Ucb. Dartmouth trash
I think they were just assuming you wanted to do SWE because most CS majors here (a2c) do lol
do people not realize there are literally tons of other high paying careers
just curious
π₯ π₯
Honestly I think Berk DS is great esp if you're planning on those data-focused fields
yeah
?
Deparmtent rankings are not useful for undergradd programs
Also they rejected my ed1
Even for undergrad ranking
It's #45
And ucb cs is #2
the rankings tend to focus on research output, which for a smaller school of course they'll be hurt
but it doesn't take into account the teaching environment
smaller classes
more opportunities to work with professors
no non-professors teaching courses
(rankings aside) cs education alone, dartmouth def doesn't come close. u can make a case for either in terms of network
Rankings don't matter as much as a measure of the quality of a program for many reasons incl. what bg said lmao
And esp because OP mentioned they're not tunnel visioned on SWE I would decide based on cost and the fit of the school overall
like your CS classes will have hundreds of people in them
your professor will have NO clue who you are
even upper level classes are often huge
yeah lmao
well that's what office hours are for
i'm just saying rankings are not the end all be all
ur missing the point. its not that swe is the best. its that every single job you can get with a ds degree, u can get with a cs degree. but the opposite is not necessarily true. if u can't afford dart tution, then id honestly go ucla or ucsd cs over cal ds.
It's also possible that they don't care abt the other job opportunities CS offers bc they care more abt the opportunities in DS
that's not what he mean
You could argue with an envsci major that they're better off doing a biology major because you can get any envsci job with a bio major but not vice versa
But it doesn't matter if they don't care about those other jobs
Β―_(γ)_/Β―
but the thing is he isn't sure what he wants
so if u did get into ucla or ucsd cs, i would choose that too like am said
hm
yeah i guess maybe ucsd cs i'd think about heavily
idk though
hey if I get into dart, i may see you in dart cs ;)
whoever you are, internet person
