cmu used to have two different waitlists: one was a “priority waitlist” that was binding if you got off (hence the name priority, think ED advantage) and a normal waitlist that was nonbinding and difficult as hell to get off of

they got rid of the binding waitlists to increase equity in the admissions process bc let’s be real who tf can commit to a school as expensive as cmu when they’re open about the fact that waitlisted students may not get adequate financial aid

so now it’s just one waitlist, but it still has the “priority” designation for whatever reason

also it’s worth noting for anyone else waiting on cmu waitlist notifs tonight: when i had to go through pre-screenings for my program they told me i would hear back abt whether i was chosen for an interview by december 15 and then didn’t tell me that they wanted me to interview until december 16 at 6:19pm lol

i know a funny thing about my hs senior year is that a bunch of ppl were bragging about their acceptances because it was a tool for clout/popularity. one kid in particular was popular because he's one of the only ones who got into USC, but he's literally a sociology major. Someone going to a CSU for STEM is probably going to end up making more than he is,, but I guess he doesn't need to care because he's really rich anyway. just funny to brag about that when major is also a big consideration for admissions obviously.

it's especially disappointing in your situation (the berk wl) when a sibling got in but that doesn't mean that you're "less than" and like ucr is still an incredible option - plus you have the ambition to apply to ucb so im sure that you will succeed and thrive at your current uni as well (even more because ucb is SO competitive)

also if you really hate it, might wanna look into transferring UCs since you guys are second highest priority after CA CCs (bearing in mind that CCs have relatively uncompetitive applicant pools, and they might be able to see you were WL rejected in the past). but i've seen a ton of people go to "lesser" UCs and after a year they end up loving it and can't imagine going anywhere else so.

especially for UCR, UCM, and UCSC ^

yea like for me, berkeley was just like so unreachably insane, i stopped even considering applying to it, and just decided to crapshoot it the day i was applying cuz why not, and getting waitlist was like one of the most excited and hopeful (and validated) ive ever felt after an incredibly brutal app process with 28 rejections and not getting into any uc other than ucm, so it closing rn is rly rly heartbreaking

trust me, i get it. i had a perfect GPA and tons of honors/APs/ECs/DE classes lol and now im at CC where the only requirement to enroll is a heartbeat. but don't let your brother's opinion tarnish your view of yourself. your school will not get in the way of your future (and in fact will only help you make it better). but it is still ultimately on you and not your school to make yourself succeed. like i said, there are smart people on every campus, and i'm confident you'll find them like magnets because you'll be bored of talking to everyone else ❤️
