basically the u.s. department of education passed this thing in 2019 called the fafsa simplification act which completely revamped the way that the federal financial aid application is completed

and instead of realizing that they were having serious issues and postponing it to the next application cycle, the department of education decided to start the new fafsa this year

normally it opens in october, but this year it didn’t open until december 31

and even then it was constantly crashing

and then the department of education realized they made a huge mistake because they forgot to factor in inflation when determining financial aid eligibility

so the information that was supposed to be sent to colleges in january was moved to mid-march

and because colleges couldn’t process all of that information within two weeks, a ton of schools couldn’t send financial aid packages when students were admitted

so a lot of schools pushed back the national commitment date from may 1 to may 15 or june 1

which is why waitlists are coming out so much later this year

and it’s funny in a very sad way because this literally benefits nobody

a lot less people qualify for financial aid now

like there used to be a multi-child discount for when families had multiple children in college… and then they got rid of it
