#Help an Awfully Mediocre CS Applicant look for Safeties/Targets

good choices! WPI worth adding too. Maybe Union College.
RIT would by my pick of the bunch. So much hands on experience with coop.
it definitely punches above its weight class
Will do, forgot to mention, the reason why my gpa is 3.7 is because I faced health issues in my sophomore year. I would have a 4.0 without me.
Ever year is a 96+ besides sophomore year which is a 78
Yup I’m applying there ed for cs
Then I would say odds are decent you'll be going there. I think with your stats, extenuating circumstances, your odds are pretty dece
yeah, if oyu're looking at RPI, WPI is fairly similar
gets you a little further from home if you care 😄
closer to a big city
You are no where near mediocre
You have a chance of getting into some very good schools
RIT is good but it’s really expensive
Campus and tech buildings are amazing though
Thoughts on some schools?
I just feel like that looking at all these 1500 sat scores and 4.3s
Was reading your comments and RPI is a good school, a lot of kids from my school go there and they say it's really nice. Would recommend
And A lot of kids usually have your scores when they get in, 3.7-3.8 with low 1400s
yeah, but i feel llike its a hard target
im looking for more actual targets for me
but yeah im def applying there
WPI seems good, heres SAT from their 2018-19 CDS (most recent, info may be dated)
check out 2022-2023
im 25th percentile
composite
hm
im 75th percentile for math and lower than 25th for reading
hmm
well I would think that they would make good targets/reaches, also you can go test optional of youd like
Def recommend RPI if you get in 😉
No problem, and good luck!
same with you
You will do great anywhere you go (I feel like some people forget about this)
hopefully
getting into a good college is a helping hand but it definitely doesnt guarantee a good future
lmao your good haha
yeah but gl, gotta get some rest and studying done for an exam tomorrow should not be on here right now lmao
omg my keyboard
maybe urochester?
WPI is test blind
And wasn't RPI the expensive one not RIT
This would definitely fall under a reach and not a target but it's probably worth looking into
RIT aid is ass (run NPC to check for urself)
URochester is fine if you're ok with living in rochester
I've lived here all my life so i'm biased but i think it sucks
the cold was def not for me 💀
you can always appeal for more depending on your situation
it gets better if you're here for a long enough time but still never gets fun
skiing is awesome tho
so many places here
oh wait r u an rit student?
nah, i got accepted though
good choice to not go
it's all just fucking parking lots
the entire campus is parking lots
they gave me around like 50k but then i appealed for more and got another 5k
lmaoo
where do you really wanna go?
well ED1 was HMC but that was a deny (all my EA apps sucked due to activity descriptions and bad essays), so now I'm gonna ED2 chicago
i love chicago campus
city in general is awesome
hope everything works out
well i’m in college already 😭
stony brook
wait what major are you going for
CS
oh boy
good luck
it’s fr so competitive
i kinda wanna transfer tho
you're cs too?
Doesn't Stony brook admit by major
Pretty sure their overall acceptance rate is a little disingenuous compared to what their cs one might be
yeah
i mean unless i accidentally talked about killing frogs or something in my essays it should be a safety
i want merit tbh
but yeah i think ur right
if you get the AOI thing in CS, i don’t think it’s worth going
aoi?
area of interest
is that a transfer to major program
it means you aren’t in the major yet
yeahh…
so you gotta pray you get into the major directly
cuz if you get AOI you can end up wasting a year just to get in the major
it’s really not worth it imo
OP i think you should look into stevens institute of tech too
SHIT is better tbh
you think so?
This isn’t true
Didn’t see that nvm
The aid isn’t ass it’s just expensive to begin with
That's basically every school nowadays
For my family's income it'd be anything over 25k
And they want like 42
(pre-merit, but still)
Most public schools are under 25k
Stony Brook is the best state school in NY I heard
it is
Yeah that's true
bro i deadass need more safeties
most of the schools are targets and high targets
i think my safeties are cunys ig
cuz idk if id be willing to dorm for safetys
Alr
RPI, Northeasterm, RIT (Applying ED 2), Rutgers, Stevens Insitute of Technology, Binghamton, Stony Brook, University at Buffalo, University at Albany, Umass Amherst, Upitt, Ohio state uni
and of course the cunys but thats a different application
Binghamton mentioned 💪
But anyways, with your GPA I think you will be fine
Ur odds are in the thousands of being rejected by every single school there
whaaaa
what schools do u think i have a >50 percent chance of being accepted into?
What are your ECs
And I’m going to assume your essays are above average
Just as a reference
intern (not prestigious & not related to cs), shadowed a local firm, secretary of club, did public speaking at a religious center, self initiated eccomerece generated 20k, did recreational coding, and co founder of online community with 6k members that got deleted
all the ecs are not prestigious at all
those ECs are very good
no competitions and nothing in that matter
above above average
RIT, Rutgers, Stevens, Binghamton, Stony Brook, Buffalo, Albany
And what’s RPI btw
bro im ngl i think im gonna get rejected from stony and bing
if you do it’s only cuz ur overqualified which prob won’t happen
a lot of kids from my school had a 1450 and 1500 and they got rejected and their app was way more comp for mine
wait im not overqualified for stony
im under qualified lol
If they are 2 good are a candidate they are just going to decline you as they know u want to go to a better school
Idk how comp stony is ngl
comp sci at stony is insane
like lets say the acceptance overall is 50 percent
cs there is more like 15-20 percent
oh ur applying as cs
yes lmao
I got no idea then ngl
lol
btw if u apply as undecided can u still choose the major you want after you enroll
like if I want to do finance ant Wisconsin and apply undecided and get in, can I still major in finance
yeah ik that
mhm
not all schools have that tho
Did u apply undecided to any of these or nah
no
im sending all my apps this break
like before janruary 31st
to half of them
the other half that need supps ima send like a week after
ah
Northeastern might send you abroad
why
You have mid stats and they send everyone who has mid stats abroad
Likely a semester or year abroad
not a problem
Northeastern though has a really good cs program compared to how selective it is
Co ops help a lot too
A lot of schools have cs degrees that are glorified math degrees but neu really prepares you for. A job
I would definitely consider it if you can pay
It's consistently ranked within t10-t20 of cs programs
thats if i get into there tho
im gonna apply test optional and ill see how it goes
Here's the other thing
It's very easy to switch your major
So if you have no cs background you can apply as something else
And then switch in the applicant portal in like 2 min
oh dang
i have an extremely slim chance at neu tho
i dont think ima make it
and im not ed'ing there
also if i get accepted ill prob go overseas
something i just cant do
If that's really the case I would indicate preference for some of their less selective programs
Like nu in
Since they know you would go if it's ur first choice
yeah
so i should apply to a less selective major
then get hopes of transferring to cs?
oh lol haha
But there is no less selective major since it's so easy to switch
yeah
Apply to the school that best fits your portfolio
So if you have no cs background but strong math grades and we're on math team apply as math major
ok
If I were you I'd indicate nu in as my first preference cuz Boston is ultra competitive and putting it as your first preference tells them you'd want to go and won't deny the offer. They reject kids who they don't think would go to nu in
But that's just my opinion
No
It ain’t selective they just ship everyone abroad
Stats?
