hi me too. got deferred yesterday by michigan and wisconsin (and i thought wisconsin was my favorite "target" school but ig not so much a target anymore) after getting rejected from my dream school REA and it's been rough. i know i'm not the only one but nobody im friends with is feeling this level of disappointment in myself that i'm feeling so i feel pretty alone rn. i just really hope i get some more luck in RD but anyone who sees this in the same boat we're in this together and i hope we all get some good news soon

this year has been really hard for basically everyone applying. schools that are meant to be more reachable have suddenly raised their standards a lot higher because of the sudden jump in the application pool from post-covid adjustments. i hear quite a few schools are just deferring because they dont have the time nor resources to check every EA they receive. this is probably gonna substantially exacerbate unless colleges change policies to accomodate the only-increasing college application pile.

Department of Education just announced yet another FAFSA delay. Schools won't be getting FAFSA eligibility info until early March, and you also won't be able to file any corrections until your FAFSA is processed. They also announced that not all applications will be processed immediately, so it may even take a few weeks past the beginning of March to see anything happen.

I'd tell you all to work with your schools on what this means, but we're honestly at a loss here too. There will probably be new guidance coming soon, but for the minute there's probably not going to be any concrete answers.

I wish there was a concept of restricted amount of RD apps, u can do how much ever you want in EA, but in RD, u can apply to lik only 5. Rich PPL gunning for t20s won't apply to a t40 or smthing just bcs they can, giving lesser advantaged applicants a better chance at admission to a decent college. Also REA will affect many EA applications so PPL will apply to a reasonable amount of colleges they are interested in, boosting acceptance rates overall

especially as an intl (bcuz like if you live near a college and visit it a lot and research/work there you probably like it more than other colleges whereas for intls everything is enticing)

also you never really know how admissions works

so imo applying to <7-8 colleges is kinda risky unless you're 100% okay with going to a safety

The vast majority of higher achieving international applicants always prefer to apply to the US, and the UK, which is no longer part of the EU, has completely lost its appeal

A good 6-word motto I've heard for the US is "Our harshest critics prefer to stay"

Nah "I studied in the US" is just a bigger flex ig. I do plan to eventually move to somewhere with affordable healthcare.

Most everyone leaves their own country to come to the US. Very few people grow up there and then move out to go somewhere else, and those people are doing it for fun, or intellectual pursuits, or creative pursuits, but not because they need money

The US has lots of opportunities, but not great for retirement

That's also true, there's a whole meta in India of people working for a decade or so in the US and then coming back to India to raise their children, now that they're part of the 0.1% in terms of income, and then those kids once more apply to the US HYPSM and repeat the cycle

hi chat, i only got deferred from one school - and then rejected - but damn am i glad i got deferred (not so much rejected). i was really apprehensive about a binding option because i liked having choices and now i've gotten to know so many amazing schools, and i got to dream even wilder than i got to for my ED. more importantly, i learnt that unlike what junior-year viola thought, my world did not end when i got deferred/rejected, nor was i incapable/failure of a person/unworthy for not getting in. hopefully ivy day clutches up for me, but even if it doesn't, i know i have solid options and i'm really grateful for where my deferral journey has led me. good luck to everyone else still waiting on decisions! we are going to eat it up 🔥
