#University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW Madison) (2023-2024)

Yeah, the exams are required and annoying
The english one isn’t that bad, but the math one costs 40 bucks
Why don’t say scores count for those stupid placement exams
I do not gotta be wasting time on an algebra 2 test
ok this is my last straw I’m not committing
Idt sat but i heard if u get placed in like calc 1 but have ap credits to cover it that automatically overrides how well you did in math b
^
This is true, but the test is still required
It’s like, up to trig
Light work
Does anyone know if I will still be able to get merit based financial aid?
OOS there ain’t much
Has any oos gotten their acceptance package
If so how long did it take since their acceptance
it took like a month for me
Is there a discord server?
UW Madison or Emory for CS
does uw madison give any scholarship for OOS students
^
uw madison
if you can afford it, there isnt even a comparison between emory cs and uw madison cs
What is the course rigor here at UW Madison for their cs curriculum?
typical CS cirriculum
Could u explain a little more
I’m trying to gauge the curriculum and see what it’s like. im not familiar with what the typical curriculum is like
Hello! Was wondering if anyone could give me some advice between UW-Madison for CS and Purdue + Honors College for CS
How ot get off waitlist plz
Huh? UW Madison and Emory are pretty on par
Honors college doesnt do much. Rankings are so similar comes down to preference
HOW TO GET OFF WAITLIST PLEEEAASSE
i mean preference is pretty vague, any more points u can give for me to consider?
was in the same position but didn’t have honors at purdue. chose purdue
i forgot what factors i considered though but take that for what it’s worth
like whichever school you like more after visiting
Im joking please pick purdue so i can get off UW waitlist
unfortunatly im not visiting either since most tours are fully booked
lol maybe
got it, thanks
literally just fly in and visit tbh. theyre public schools you can just walk on lmao
is cost same at prudue and uw?
yeah but think abt it, that would cost around 400-500 bucks, but i can do a virtual tour instead
purdue cheaper but cost isnt really a factor im considering
400 bucks to decide where to spend the next 100k and 4 yrs of ur life is not alot in the grand scheme of things
😂😂
ig, but then there is one more issue, I have AP Research stuff due end of april so wont have time to do both
presentations and paper
so its a mix of cost and time
tho i am having private meetings with reps and going to Q&A sessions and all that to help make more of an informed decision
visiting in-person is a much much better way to figure out what you like
you’re considering a 200k dollar investment
don’t try to save 500 dollars
if you really wanna save $$$ go to cc
well thats not really how im trying to save lol, but i see your point
i think its like 10k cheaper but still waiting on parents to finish the overall cost calculator
lowkey just take cc bro! (i am on the wl for purdue and uwisc)
so real
fml
there may be some bias here..
The change in prestige and CS opportunity is noise
regarding purdue and UWisc
Id say decide off preference
but purdue also has this like new funding thing towards the cs and business departments
thats prob what ill end up doing, finding the right "vibe"
Not that im trying to get off the waitlist of UW... buuuutttt 40k is alot of money you get by attending Purdue
😁😁
🙂
purdue has as better CS program than uWISC @hard lance
yes this too
ye but barely
please let me in
lol
isnt purdue 18 and uw 22
Computer Science Open Rankings is a meta ranking of four individual computer science rankings covering universities in the United States and Canada.
this is most accurate
This is the objective ranking for job opps
oh that considers research as well tho right
and
yes
the us news rankings on there are for grad school
not undergrad
these are undergrad rankings: https://www.reddit.com/r/ApplyingToCollege/comments/16lnder/us_news_2024_ranking_of_best_undergraduate/
purdue is #18 for job opportunity and uwisc is 28
You can have my spot
Not for cs? Bro what
correct
yeah youre prolly right. Emory still is in the same ballpark tho
Y’all I just read that there was an error in their rd decisions and they are releasing the corrected ones tonight
Shockingly low, only like 60 required credits
The campus lives are SIGNIFICANTLY different between the two, and at the level of education at both, that probably matters more
what.
is you trolling bro
We love april fools
Hmm ok so what exactly does low mean. does it mean the classes are easier?
Best day of the year
I speak as a Computer Engineering Major (which has significantly more requirements), but there is a LOT of freedom in the CS major, so much that almost all required classes have multiple options.
Some classes are really hard (would be anyways but specifically hard here) like OS and Algos, but the total credit load is really small, especially since a lot of credits for CS majors have to be Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences (due to L&S requirements, 36 credits in total).
Overall it’s a lot less rigorous a curriculum than at other universities for the same major
Everyone considering CS should read the CS requirements btw
could u elaborate a bit more on how they are different?
Thanks
This clarified a lot
Would you say the lower rigor is a good thing or a bad thing when comparing to other colleges?
I don’t know particularly, but I do know a lot of freshman year here is just getting a lot of gen eds done, with only 2 or 3 CS classes taken in the year, and then sophomore year going crazy in depth. Whether it’s better is a matter of opinion. If you’re looking for jobs, you can still take more than required in the specialty you want while still getting the general degree, which I think is a good thing overall
Alr thanks a lot for the help
I am by no means an expert, but from what I’ve heard, Purdue has a more academically focused culture while madison is more socially oriented
praying im off the waitlist 🙏
got it, thanks
we are not cooked
61% acceptance rate off WL considering last year
4,436/7221=61.5%
NO WAY
YOURE JOKING
HOW?
that is very very false lol
looks like a cds screenshot. i'll go take a look for myself
shit. hes not wrong.
Do ur research brother 😭
oh wait wrong thread
i thought this was purdue 😭
yeah anecdotally literally everyone ik who got waitlisted at madison last year got in
decisions were given out around ~12 may
god hopefully i get in
yeah I’m probably not going to this school if I make it into my first choice lmao
Don’lt look at last year as a reference for this year, you are setting yourself up for bad choices
Please let this man get into his first choice 🙏😔👆
🙏
thankfully i didnt get waitlisted at uwm(or anywhere else)
when do i hear from the waitlist?
In the letter they sent they said after may 1st and by the end of July
holy shit that standard dev
fr
Them telling us that an average of 28.7% of students get off the waitlist is so misleading lmao
Take ap stats yall
@tame grove "The expected yield we use in our acceptance metrics is 33.91%, and the 2023 yield was 29.21%, which resulted in a mass waitlist offering" So basically if the yield rate is under 30% this year we have a good shot
wait where did u get the first statement
Ngl probably a reddit bullshitter
fuck 😭
lets stay positive
maybe they accidently under admitted last year
But the 20, 21, 22, 23 yield rate was 26%, 33%, 29%, 28%
right
i think they probably did because I'm pretty sure they overadmitted in 22 and 21
how do they overadmit twice in a row 😭
Hold on lets grab the full Data
yeah ill do some calculations
Grinnell but it was 60k so i had to turn it down
football recruit thing
thats it 😭
we will get CS dont worry
fsfs
...decent
3.6 UW 4.6 Weighted
took all APs and hard ass classes lowk got cucked in two out of 6
2
and 4 As?
yeah
Yeah i did everything possible lol
good now the only thing we can do is wait
did u apply purdue
rejected outright
yeah man
thats brutal
So far what data ive gotten
Enrollees by year (20,21,22,23): 6430, 6610, 6862, 7550
What the fuck is that spike in 23
im looking up "uw meet the class of 2023"
2021 - 8,442 enrolled
and change the year
these are my sources
that might include grad, transfer, and abroad programs
https://news.wisc.edu/meet-the-class-of-2021/, https://news.wisc.edu/meet-the-class-of-2020/, https://news.wisc.edu/meet-the-record-breaking-class-of-2022/, https://www.wisc.edu/about/facts/
This fall, UW–Madison welcomed 6,610 freshmen — the largest incoming class in the university’s history, up 2.8 percent from last year. Of the group, 3,746 are Wisconsin residents, up from 3,671 in 2016.
This fall, the University of Wisconsin-Madison welcomed 6,430 newly enrolled freshman, up from 6,270 last year. Of those students, 3,671 come from Wisconsin, up from 3,617 last year.
This fall’s newly arrived freshmen make up the largest incoming class in UW–Madison's history, drawn from the highest number of applicants ever. And the number of students of color is at an all-time high for an incoming freshman class.
my sources
2020: 6420
2021: 6610
2022: 6862
2023: 7,966
double checked still got these
you are correct
oh shit i think i found it
Transfer enrolls (20,21,22,23):
1091, 1128, 1141, 889
the transfer enrolls increased by around 200 in the years waitlist acceptance rate was in the decimals
and WL acceptance rate spikes in the years its under 1100
so are they decreasing transfer admits?
im getting conflicting data
2020 Applicants, Admitted Applicants, Enrolls:
3525, 1830, 1010
2021 Applicants, Admitted Applicants, Enrolls:
3528, 2075, 1136
2022 Applicants, Admitted Applicants, Enrolls:
3974, 2102, 1154
2023 Applicants, Admitted Applicants, Enrolls:
4442, 2112, 1129
'The campus welcomed 889 new transfer students' according to https://news.wisc.edu/meet-the-class-of-2023/
But the CDS says they enrolled 1129 wtf
“We’re seeing a very high demand for a UW–Madison education from students across the state, nation and globe,” says Provost Karl Scholz. “Our promise to these talented and creative students is a world-class experience at a top-ranked public institution that remains one of the best values in the country.”
admitted =/ enrolled
my bad i meant enrolled
hmmm that is strange
WTF
Im tweakin
Fuck me
😭
yea lowkey could be 0.3% again this year
lmao
Fuck
how so
looking a little deeper 1 sec
kk
2023: 7969 enroll
2022: 8628 enroll
2021: 8465 enroll
so clearly enrollment spiked in those two years for freshman direct applicants
right, when about 8500 enroll thats when WL is not considered really
Since we dont have enrollment data yet
so they like to enroll about 8000
2023: 27527 admits
2022: 29546 admits
2021: 32466 admits
this is the admission data
ya
2023: 28.9
2022: 29.2%
2021: 26.1%
Yield rate
ok good
Also see if you can find how many freshman they actually admitted in 2023 like this past cycle
i cant fucking find it
I think its out
let me see if i can find it
this is for 2023 fall not 2024 fall (us)
hmmm i see
yes that is correct
wait what
43.32 for fall 2023
not this years admission cycle
we are fall 2024
UCs admit rates for 2024 are out though
hmmm interesting
Ive searched far and wide
you were right
ive found no data regarding 2024 AR or App volume for freshmen
😔
did u check their social medias
wait @tame grove i noticed something
wat
Waitlist volume is lowk a good indicator
2021: 8k
2022: 6k
2023: 13k
waitlist count
On low waitlist years they accepted 11-14
on 13k they admit 4k
right but they waitlist x amount of people if they know y number of admits
Yeah so in 2023 they played it safe and underadmitted as well as overwaitlisted
correct, but theres nothing that will help support the idea that they did the same shit for 2024
maybe they didnt like overwaitlisting and underadmitting
thats ture
true
And its also public info that they have 7996 spots for freshman
so those times UW admitted 8000+
They were most likely spending alot to get housing and shit for those guys
the extra enrolls that is
Honestly this is too much black magic for me
time to just pray and hope
fuck the stats
the stats can only tell us so much
lets just hope that they underadmitted this year too
Facts
dyk when the waitlist offers come out?
I heard it was around late may for some people but usually june-july 13th when it closes
Well last year people heard as early as late April and then a good amount were sent out first week May and into second week
bet bet
Not accidentally, it was intentional
They overenrolled so massively the last two years that the University was struggling significantly to find housing and classes for all of them, so I would bet there would be another large waitlist accept this year too, just so they have control over how many students come
is there any public info regarding uwisc acceptance numbers
Wdym?
yeah its just some schools have already released admit rate
which can be done before cycle is done
all colleges right now should know admit rate other than rolling admission colleges
is anyone here doing CS honors?
if so did yall do honors liberal arts before declaring honors cs, and was it worth it
I would love to go here but the issue is the 40k a year tuition as a OOS person
Same question here
UC berkeley is 50k for an IS person so I'd say i'll take what i can get bruh
that's because its California lol
I didn't bother applying to any California schools because everything is more expensive there anyways
my EFC got fucked by fafsa its 77k I'm gonna try to pull some shit to lower it
for next year that is
I'll take UWisc for 40k bruh
for 4 years your be roughly around 200k in debt if you include housing and everything else
Debt? Theres a reason my EFC is 77k bro 😂
why’s everyone’s efc so high 😭
ikr, mine is 102k but bro i got siblings who tryna go to college as well, aint no one tryna pay that high
mate mine is like 15 or 20k with a sibling in college 😭
Friendly reminder if you were admitted but know ur not going to go pls withdraw or decline offer 🙏
Helps WL
gotchu bro
Calvin Austin just did that
I be helping myself find a new QB
in the next few yrs
anybody got their financial aid package yet??
nope
which is better for cs, uw madison or vtech?
Madison
could you explain why
madison
check academic rankings
its not even close
usnews or ANY ranking
Madison 100%
UCSD or UW physics? Cost is the same
SD
Why? Just because of prestige/rank?
UW as in Wisconsin or Washington?
If wisconsin, I'd go UCSD. If Washington, I'd go UW
oh wait i thought this was ucsd thread, I'm dumb
Personally I preferred ucsd as a school, so I'd say that's a better option
is there any server for UW Madison'28?
dude someone i know just said they went to wisco admitted thing and the people said only 8000 admit
out of 66k applicants
that cannot be real right
thats 12%
Considering they have about 35K students they probably meant “66K applicants for a freshman class of 8000”
they probably mean 8000 seats available
not 8000 people accepted
yeah thats what i thought too
is their yield bad lol
Probably like 40-50%
Idt cs makes a difference
Ok
Maybe this is a bad place to ask this, but are there any classes or internships for Materials Engineering related to environmental things? I'm interested in making stuff like more recyclable plastics, biodegradable packaging etc
this
Wisconsin
The UW whose channel I sent the message in lmao
when should i hear about the waitlist
1 day after enrollment deadline
May 2 or may 16
why these two dates lmao
All my friends got it 1 day after commit date last year
This year commit date has been moved to may 15 for many unis so maybe uw Madison did it too
Why does everyone say that
Aren't they pretty similar in terms of rank
when should my SOAR date be?
im worried that I won't get the courses I need
if I register too late
purdue for sure
They have similar CS prestige, SD just has better overall prestige and job opportunity
which one is better for wildlife conservation..uw madison or virginia tech??
if anybody knows
I’m a physics major 💀
LMAO
My bad bro
thank you bro
i mean... uw madison is in the middle of --nowhere-- I mean, "nature"
just declined my offer and committed to purdue! good luck to people on the waitlist ‼️
i didnt apply for any scholarship , i have no aid bcz of am intl. student.
What can I do to reduce the tution fee?
any suggestions which one will be better ?
what were the deciding factors for purdue for u
idk i'm not committing here ahahahha
but my suggestion will be applying to those more specific scholarships
less competition
its a combination of things that i made in a spreadsheet, but here are some of the factors:
purdue has more rigor in courses
purdue has higher ranking
purdue is cheaper
I got purdue honors college as well
purdue is getting more funding through their purdue computes program and is getting more faculty specifically for cs
purdue is better for job placement and has better industry connections and job fairs
however, uw-madison did have some good factors, such as:
better graduate school (i want a masters in cs)
better location
better research labs
ah
Is Wisc. Madison out of state FAFSA bad??? Perhaps if ur maybe like -1500 SAI
I just committed!
same!
Anybody else commit?
Or any past or current students need advice on what dorm to go for.
😄
IU?
yup
get me off the waitlist
I committed, and my older siblings go there
From what they said don't put kronshage bc its probably the worst
And even if Smith is nice someone jumped out of window and died there
The rest comes down to money and if you want a single, double, triple, or quad. Or if want a learning community
It's one of the newer ones and it's in a lively area since it's southeast as opposed to lakeshore dorms.
It's also one of the noiser/party dorms like wittie
The closest dinning hall (Gordon) is across the street, and it's buffet style, so all you can eat
I think the rooms are bigger than other dorms
Also, I don't think it's relatively close to freshman year classes so you might have to take the bus, which gets crowed easily
Hope this helps 🙂
Are you in a learning community?
oop 0.0 thanks!
No, I only committed and I do want to be in a learning community but that adds additional cost to housing
I'll probably ask my siblings or ppl ik who go madison and know more about it
Kronshage by far the worst
For cheaper lakeshore dorms, do like Tripp or Adams
I'm in a learning community and it's pretty chill. Lots of merch and events with increased cost of housing, as well as usually some equipment for more specialized communities
I'm in Ogg. It's nice, big rooms, expensive, all triples next year
Is pretty far from freshmen classes though
(Though all dorms but chad and waters are
If anyone from NJ is looking for a roommate hmu in dms
Ogg and Sellery have the learning communities. Chad, Sellery, Witte, Ogg, and merit are all close to Business building, though I don’t know about how many classes freshmen have there
I heard that merit is closing after this year
apparently according to uw admissions insta fin aid will come around apr 29
Only got loans for aid 😦
I got financial aid offer for fall, definitely check ur mail guys 👍🏻
Out of state*
I got mine today, although disappointing, I'll try to get more aid. I'm in state btq
is it worth appealing for merit aid?
they're done with giving merit aid right?
got nothing ==
the only school to give me nothing ==
There is always the wish hub with those scholarships
I was one of the ppl with the fafsa problems
Please gimme yalls spot on wisconsin from the waitlist my 3.2 gpa ass aint get in nowhere 🙏😔💯
24 rejections aint easy on my soul 👆
I'm assuming you have good testing scores to even get deferred/waitlisted?
Also, what are you majoring in?

bro look at the year before
0.4%
like 30 mins ago
ye but they overenrolled
shitt tmr my rest day
thats fax
they prolly underenrolled twice ina row
this year they confirmed like 8k max enrollments
so theyre on par for like 2020 admissions
they fucking better

Good bro
wait lemme slide my class list
bet send in dms
you in honors yeah?
yeah im applying fort their college rn
oh ok
aint nobody gaf in this server
We doing IVC negotiations in wisconsin channel fuck it
Sheet1
AP Class,IVC Course,No. Credits,Required Score,Scored:,IGETC Reqs,UCI CS Reqs,UCLA Math of Comp,UC Berkeley Applied Math,UCSD Mathematics+CS Reqs,UCSB CS
Calc AB,Math 2 and Math 3A/3AH,10,5,ANTH1H,CS 37,CS 37,CS 37,CS 37
CSP,-,3,3,5,WR2H,CS 41,CS 41
Lit,Lit 1,3,4,MUS20,CS 10
APES,ENV 1,4,4,5
this my spreadsheet for applying to UCs in 1 yr if you wanna tap in
they got HELLA requirements
oh BET BRO
yo this is a good spreadsheet bro
@lusty folio @lusty folio DOI NOT TAKE ANY CS CLASSES AT IVC
TAKE THEM AT SADDLEBACCK
you will havee a tough time matriculating to uci creds or ucla creds if u take any cs at IVC
everything else is fine in terms of classes at ivc just dont take cs there
take cs at saddleback
better profs and easier enrollment transfer
its really stupid
take at saddleback
revise spreadsheet for ssaddleback
so much better profs
theres a machine learning club there
its nice
shit okay fuck
easier A?
My only CS classes are Data Structures (CS41) and CS10 intro to python i think
no time
and SD
yep
brooo
Im just gonna try and ball out
Ok lemme explain
kk
HARD reqs are like here
lemme show
'
To be considered for this major, you must complete the following courses by the end of spring before transfer:
Four semesters/five quarters Calculus through Multivariable, and
Either Linear Algebra or Differential Equations.
All courses must be taken for a letter grade.
'
Right
then everything under it is HIGHLY reccomended unless it says required
so liek this area
but if u wanna get into ucla transfer i think its better to take all physics
math 3a is required cuz its in there
Right
i have ap physics credit but they dont fucking take it
i cant sack soph year internships brooo ☹️
that like hurts CS career hella bad
DUDE thats what ive been trying to convince myself
cause i got into penn state CS
and ucf CS
Dont do that
but my parents are NOT sending me there
its like
yeah
this way
UCLA for 2 years (2 years ivc) < UCI for 3-4 years (Maybe IVC transfer year 1)
True
UC berkeley 2 years vs UCI for 3? Idk it honestly is pretty even
how it usually works
Freshman year you dont know shit so no internships or maybe nepo intern at moms company or smt
Sophomore year you do some mid level ones yk not apple but maybe at some random hardware company or some bigger startups
Jr year you have some more experience you shoot for the moon
TRY for FAANG but anything big name works
sr year no intenrhsips cuz u need an actual job now
so thats the main method
bro really censored me
losing sophomore internships by IVC maxxing means you fuck over your junior year opportunities by haveing no internships/experience
aint no company hiring from ivc mane
no bro plsu we are inelibnle
"must be enrolled in a accredited program for bs in cs"
in all of any cs internships
swe/mle
and we arent doing that cause of IVC
I gotchu, withdrawing my app tdy 🫡
Looks like you shot too high w/ extra competitive major, at worst, you could always do CC & transfer
Is there a uw madison server
Usually the discord hub has year servers
The interesting thing here (and this might have changed) is CS is and L&S, which admits regardless of major, and has the highest admission rate. CS may have spun off to a different department this year though
Really? Has admissions been oddly more competitive for cs this year?
¯_(ツ)_/¯
I’m sowwy :((((
Hoping ur FAFSA issues are resolved soon!
I got u
Yeah I have to get around actually calling them to figure out the problem
GPA fucked by fresh soph yer
thanks big unc
she a thug
thanks gang
As u prolly know, ur net calculator is ur best guess of ur offer without getting ur actual offer. My offer was pretty close to my net calc estimate. Just something to think abt it if u haven’t alrdy
Does anyone have any experience with the language LLCs?
Hey I had a quick question abt placement tests
If u are majoring in cs, are you required to take any world language classes? If u are, do you have to take placement tests for that?
College of L&S requires some language classes. The placement tests would be to test into a higher class and may fulfill the requirement. Double check on the L&S requirements page
Thanks I’ll check this out
how much did u get?
full ride + 1500
oos
1st gen?
yeah
you could do a rough estimation by looking at your sei
I did it and got like 5k CoA
What's your Sai
-1500
Did anyone get in off the waitlist yet
Switched to the College of Engineering from L&S lesgooooo
Has everyone recieved their financial aid offer?
I did
wasn’t great tho
ended up withdrawing
i havent recieved mine yet 💀
what did u get?
Nothing ☠️
idk why I even applied tho tbf
Wasn’t expecting anything in the first place
wut was ur SAI?
Kinda crazy that they said the aid that they offered me was all loans
15k ish
oos
Hoping the best for you then
UC Davis putting me 65k/yr in-debt 💀
it’s a lot harder to get stuff oos
Ouch
i have seen so many ppl getting almost full tuition, with a similar SAI, so i its got my hopes up... but they aint sending it 🤣
I think it’s a lot more likely you get something since my sai isn’t extremely low
yea tru
Idk what half of those acronyms mean but I switched from L&S to engineering so I imagine it's pretty doable. I'd just email admissions
Does uw have pre vet
I’m pretty sure you just do it through myUW somehow
any WL movement yet?
How do I check my placement test results? I took the math exam on paper around the middle-ish of April and haven't gotten anything back
Do we need to pre register for any of the online exams
And also does the math b online exam require pre registration?
