#UNC-Chapel Hill (2023-2024)

Ya that’s true..
Because I underloaded my second sem (didn't take any bio/enec classes) I've had to pick up the slack per se in my 2nd/3rd years
But generally taking 15-16 credit hours
15 is roughly what they suggest iirc so
Although I am overloading this semester (19.5)
RD decisions when?
Yah thats what iw as gonna try and do
probs mar 29
What is competitive for UNC oos?
1600 SAT, 4.0, and atleast 3 national awards.
Generally for OOS you'd need to be pretty close to top of your class. I don't have specific stats to aim for, but OOS applicants are viewed with much higher scrutiny (since there are so few spaces for OOS students)
does anyone know how hard the cs major selection process is? According to Reddit it’s not that bad but idk if I should trust that
It's not really. UNC CS added admissions not to make the program more "prestigious" but to make sure every student who wanted a CS major would get one; because the dept was so underfunded and understaffed, there were students who hadn't taken the core CS classes by their senior year. I forget which prof is the dept chair but he said it's not to kick people out, but to make sure the people in get what they need for the degree
tysm. Do you go to chapel hill by any chance (just wondering how you know all this)?
I do :)
I'm a third year bio/envsci double major, planning on an MSIS in environmental informatics
I really enjoy helping people and because I'm familiar with UNC, I really enjoy helping ppl with UNC stuff lol
Is the same true for Biz?
I see thanks! Also that’s kind of what I’m interested too
Biz is certainly more competitive, but it's not like <30% AR lol. They don't share the same philosophy at all since KF has a lot of "prestige" to live up to, and business is a pre-professional program in its own school (while CS is still in the college of arts & sciences)
Very neat!! I'm always here to answer questions <3
is oos informatic sci hard to get into and how is the aid?
Pre professional programs dont take into account in state vs OOS
Think of it as an application within the school
Do we know when did UNC release last year rd 😭
the 24th
Manifesting unc acceptance day 22
I just realized I also failed to answer some other parts to this question LOL
UNC merit aid in general is very difficult and I wouldnt bank on it
I dont think IS has any special aid opportunities
IS is not hard to get into as a major
Tysm
Wouldn’t it come out at like 22nd this year or nah
R we anticipating delay
If I had to put money on it, that's what I'd bet
but that's just a guess based off of last year's release date
Makes sense thanks
GO TARHEELS!
BOOST SORRY I LEFT THIS CHAT BY ACCIDENT
Yep last week was peak in Chapel Hill
u dont have to be sorry
thanks
Manifesting unc acceptance day 23
You dont get admitted by major :)
Unless you're doing a pre prof program, you're technically admitted to your first choice major upon acceptance to UNC
All pre-professional programs require an application once you're at UNC
I’m not doing a pre-professional program, so they just put you in a general course for the first year?
I’m so confused 😭
When you're admitted to UNC, you're admitted to the college of arts and sciences basically. No major in AS (except for CS) requires an application to switch to; you just declare it as your major or talk to an advisor
Certain undergrad majors are in other "colleges" at UNC. The common ones are business, journalism, HPM, and info science, although there are a lot more
Those programs require you to apply for the specific major after completing prerequisite classes
Ohh tysm that makes sense
But in general they consider the second major option right because in some of the colleges I didn’t get into didnt consider the 2nd option
They dont consider major at all
The only time they consider major is if you select to be considered for assured enrollment
Otherwise its simply accepted to UNC or not
But even then if you dont get assured enrollment and get accepted to UNC youre still accepted to UNC and can declare any AS major (or officially apply to the pre-prof major)
Ohh tyy
when do we think unc will drop rd?
This Friday
When did unc come out last year?
the 24th
Manifesting unc acceptance day 24
Wait did we have to write a separate application for global launch
Is the 31st on their website more of a “no later than” kinda thing
i dont think we had to
i just listed the 3 locations don't think i did anything else aside from that for global launch
yeah it's like no later than the 31st some people in here think that it drops this friday but they still havent announced a date yet so we don't know
Idt they ever announce tho do the
I think they do it day of once it drops
Last year was the 24th that’s why people think this friday right
ugh ikr
Manifesting unc acceptance day 25
Is there any other reason it’s coming out tmrw besides that it was this last year
Nope
idt it’s tmrw tbh ..
does anyone know if unc has a tendency to send a decision notification email beforehand?
I think it's going to be the 25th
Ime they don't
Wait fr??
Woah how do u know
When are decisions coming out?
nobodu knows
can you send proof so we can add it to our calendar?
^^
it’s speculation and also UNC never does an official announcement
speculation based on what
rip
Prob past years’ release dates
yeah although I guess leap year messes that up too
idk, schools usually release the same despite leap years (i.e. last Thursday of March, last Friday of February, etc.)
u guys got this! also is there a gc for admitted unc students? i should’ve asked awhile ago 😭
yeah I’ll just check today ig
do we have havw a guess at the time
I would guess either 5PM EST or 7PM EST
perfect the two times i have other colleges dropping
Wait they just dropping without warning?
Wasn’t it a little before 4pm est last year
boost last day (hopefully?)
BOOST HOPING ITS LAST DAY
BOOOOOST
R we thinking it comes out today or nah
Damn this thread hella quiet 😭
I think most ppl applied ea lol
Gonna assume probably not today
Womp womp
CC thread is dead quiet too :(
That was surprising to me too
Imma check portal in 5 minutes just in case ig
Is it out
No
I dont see anything
Real lol

Imagine it doesn’t come out today
It’ll probably end up being next Friday
What about nc state
what’s the oos acceptance rate
8% for unc
great
What is oos?
Out of state
out of state
Shisshhhh
I am international
Out of state
Yea ur out of state
You’re cooked
That’s what I was ab to type 😂
Extra cooked
I am instate and I am cooked 😂
Fried to a golden brown crisp
My nerves are popping
im doubly cooked as oos 😭
Deep fried
It’s out

Yo r we being cmu-Ed
Yeah wouldn’t troll haha
OH I GOT IN
YOOO CONGRATS YALL
I GOT IN
mods can we get a poll?
Rejected 🔥🔥🔥
.gracie. asks: What was your RD decision?
1⃣: accepted
2⃣: waitlisted
3⃣: rejected
Waitlisted lol
was anyone anticipating a UNC decision today? I didn't see any talk of it on this server 🤣
Yes we were
accepted!!! 💥💥💥
it was a pretty quiet drop and most people thought it'd be at 4
but then it didn't come out at 4 so people assumed not today
waitlist
Reject
damn i’m cooked
Rejected
3 rejections in a row
waitlist bro
Accepted
literally everywhere is a waitlist for me
congrats
guys what is this I swear I applied business
lmfao
I didn't get that
and I'm a environmental related major
I had 3-4 rejections in a row before this so ur not cooked
ahhh is it out
usc and tufts is a cook bro esp if i was waitlisted at unc
i’m cooked 😹😹, i will be getting undeffered from yale
nobody can predict tufts decisions - they're too quirky
i’m jp every setback is a setup for a bigger comeback
hm well we’ll see at 7 ig
tufts comes out at 7 too 😭 same time as gatech
it’s my b on my mid year report
yeahh
a level?
good luck gtech was crazy this year
Oh wdid somrone post one already
lmfao
gg waitlisted
moral of the story is don't get a D in DE art appreciation the first semester of your senior year !
damn bro rejected OOS
rejected oos
got in w/ accelerated research and honors. can you accept both?
like if you accept your offer would you be part of both
yes i believe so
Rejected oos 3:
I’m sorry guys
How many people get waitlisted
^^ and how many get off
try checking the CDS a decent amount got off like 2yrs ago
tldr: it's grim
NCSU is out as well ya'll
wasnt expecting anything as international tbh
How is waitlist for oos?
i got that as soon as i got in for early action!
it should be for admitted students to schedule event tours on the campus or for scholar program stuff but i forgot
anyone OOS get horrible aid too 😭
damn then i prob got rejected
i mean u can check
decisions have been released
yeah bruh
imma wait for my other decisions and then try to get it down
Yes
congrats to all yall that got in and those of you who didn’t you I hope yall love whatever school you go to
nah im just asking cuz im too scared to open my decision
rejected 😔
rip
If anyone has questions abt UNC I'm here to answer :)
Is there a UNC discord
Or UNC ‘28
Also idek what school or major I got accepted to, I genuinely forgot
If you have an official UNC email with your Onyen, you can connect to the Discord hub thing
r/unc may also have some discord invites
Unless you got accepted for an assured enrollment program, youre not admitted to any specific major
But I’m accepted to a school tho right
Like arts & science, or engineering, or whatever
We only have specific schools for pre-professional majors which you apply to once you're already at UNC
is env sci/information science competitive
Otherwise its Arts & Sciences ig but thats where 97% of majors are anyways
nooo 😔
Envsci doesnt require an application & IS isnt very competitive
I'm envsci/bio with a cert/dual degree in SILS (which houses the info sci major) so I can answer more specific program questions if youre interested
Wait so UNC is not divided up into school of engineering, school of arts & science, school of fine arts etc?
So if I applied as like, poli sci, I can come in and start doing engineering?
So you got this?
UNC doesn't have engineering
Oh right
Oh oops
but it is split into schools yes, there's like kenan-flagner school of business and hussman school of media & journalism
Wait no
they require an application
I just saw biomedical engineering
UNC doesn't have an engineering department, the BME program is a joint operation between UNC and NCSU
The joint Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) is a department of both the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC–Chapel Hill) and North Carolina State University (NC State). The department oversees a joint graduate and undergraduate program at these institutions. While a complete curriculum is offered on the UNC–Chapel Hill campus, students can elect to take any number of classes at NC State. The joint program also leverages the industry resources in Research Triangle Park, located roughly half way between the two campuses, providing unique opportunities for students.
not much, i heard they were working on a dedicated data science major as of last year? not sure if that's a thng now
it's out
check your email
and your portal
ohhh
yes came out at 4:30 EST
huge day for decisions oml
like damn
woahhh where do u see this
Our college decision dates calendar lists when each university is releasing their admissions decisions, including the class of 2028.
A2c calendar and website :D
tysm!!
What do these mean 💀 if I wanna do a BS in data sci next year, I was supposed to apply by yesterday????
Wait but I’m not even sure if I’m going to UNC by that date
💀💀
What is this deadline bro
idk 😫 that's a weird way to go about it ngl
This info is likely for students already at UNC. Chances are you'll be able to apply for spring entry during the fall semester (or fall 2025 entry during spring/your second sem)
You have to apply for DS and CS /shrug
Might as well do the one you want to do
Yep, 3rd year envsci/bio double major
Will be sticking here hopefully for grad school as well
Do u have a UNC discord
That I could join
One sec
Unc CS honors college!!!! 🥱🥱🥱
unc cs oos
I'm curious, does CS do assured enrollment?
Like did either of yall get something that specifically said in your decision that you can start taking the CS classes
<1% ar is crazy congrats 😭😭
is it really?
I'm asking this bc I dont want to burst yalls bubble but if they didnt explicitly say you're in CS in the decision, I think you should know that you need to apply for the major
Buddy
Im in the honors college
- i got assurred enrolent
Bro thinks hes the buddha or some shi 😂😂
wait why do u go to unc?
The all knower
I've been here for 3 years
Bro definitely jumped up and down when he got into UNC and then realized he couldnt do CS
Sorry 🤣🐚
Knock it off, I'm trying to be helpful so you dont commit then find out that you have to reapply for CS
Honors college doesnt mean guaranteed acceptance to CS
I didnt know if CS did assured enrollment which is why I asked
Its alright
I know some ppl get confused abt major-based acceptance and particular program stuff so I just want to help ppl make the most informed decision
Congrats on honors college btw, you'll love the honors dorm :)
@inner quail i didnt get in )): I was so wishjng I would so if I went we could meet up or something
yes, 0.8% for OOS
Awh, I'm sorry :( RD is tough as shit. Once I'm rich I'll just fly you here :)
omg ur so real for that 😭 and it really is I shouldve done ea ..
How competitive is spring launch or whatever its called?
WHAT WDYM 0.8
8% AR OOS * 10% AR Honors = 0.8% OOS honors AR
thanks for the boosts ❤️
aw im sry
Pretty much
it’s fine i’m prob choosing ucla
thanks for the boosts too it was fun while it lasted
ofc!!
Anyone else not get their results yet?
No, if u dont see something by tmrw morning maybe email admissions?
how tf did i get in what😭
ur goated
that's geniuenly crazy
congrats on all of yall accepted today! UNC is a great school :) u should be so proud
so sad
I think they partner with nc state for biomed engineering?
yupp
hey guys! I got into UNC RD and into the honors program. i also got an academic scholarship that gives me in-state fees as an intl student.
can someone explain the carolina honors program?
for waitlist?
Guys i got into UNC at chapel hill
Have you looked at the Honors Carolina site?
For the CS application
Wanted to drop in and mention this comment from one of the lovely bio faculty that should better explain UNC's deal with how majors work
is there a way i can see what major i was accepted to? or is that only for certain programs?
Refer to the post I sent above
Now it's up to you to declare your major, unless you want to declare a major that requires application, and that will happen only in your sophomore or junior year. most majors (e.g physics, biology, psychology, english) are not application-based and you can simply declare them.
UNC Honors or UCLA
what’s ur major
Also are you oos for both
or instate for either one
UCLA
so uh
if ur oos for both
what’s the price difference
if you aren’t factoring in costs and stuff then ucla is definitely better
Might be worth posting in #954425230896545792 if you havent already
I got in UNC & WASHU ST. LOUIS for Business major. Which should i choose btw?
oh so sorry i didn't see the post 😭 that clears it up tho, i'm assuming that poli sci is just smth u can declare
All good! You'd assume correctly :)
#954425230896545792
CMU or UNC for data science/stats ?
Full pay for both, so CMU is roughly 25k more expensive
#954425230896545792
when does UNC come out
unc already came out iirc
tbh if they're already taking out loans, or if they'll be taking out loans for the additional 25k, its absolutely not worth it to go to CMU
not because CMU is a "worse academic choice" but taking on that amount of debt is objectively a dumb idea
not necessarily
fafsa doesnt mean you get anything
i know that i dont get unsubsidized anything and i think its like 5k/sem
for unc
regardless a lot of rich people can't afford 85k/year out of pocket for college
when it comes to debt if youre going to take any you dont want to say "well im already taking on some debt, might as well take on more bc im already in debt"
bc compound interest is a bitch
yea fs
like i love unc but id never tell someone to pick it over a place thats more affordable
I won’t be taking any loans or going into debt
My parents are paying for absolutely everything
But still it is a 25k per year difference which must be considered
I'd post in #954425230896545792
I didn't
I am waiting for UMICH, ivyday & Northwestern also.
I am confused af
Some r recommending UNC, some WASHU.
Wait what did unc out of state already come out?
Yes on Friday check ur portal
Shi
shit
💀
Can I just email the financial aid office to ask for more aid
what happened
aw
Hi boys
And squirmy
Only 1 more week till ncssm results
I really want to thank y'all for helping me along the way
Even if I might not get in, it's been a long journey man and I'm thankful
Anyone else waitlisted
welcome to the club
Dead chat
ok bud
we also tend to go through active/"dry" phases
like there's usually small bursts of activity rather than consistent daily activity
ig this is one where it’s right after rd
mhm
im sure activity might go up when we hit orientation/fall schedule planning
im hoping
thats my favorite time of the year lol, i love helping people plan their schedules
🔥
ncsu
what about it
any UNC admitted student server?
Once you have your school email set up, you can access the Discord hub for some club/social servers
NCSU gave us emails without enrolling lmfao
I wonder if UNC-CH will make the same mistake
I dont think they will
Im pretty sure you need to use your Onyen to make the email and you make Onyen via enrolling lol
and for ppl who submit extra credit (AP or IB) how do u do it?
yeah we could make ours through unity
even without enrolling
but we didn't actually make it
just set password
nah I have my email without enrolling
Interesting
i think its needed to view financial aid offers
Would make sense
are most of you guys oos or instate
If you're able send them your AP scores and they'll evaluate and give credit accordingly
yeah I used my NCSU one to get free matlab
All UNC system schools are required to give credit for a 3 its fantastic
except ncsu for calc
oh ok
Some UNC courses are similar
the ap score stuff is prob what tips the scale for me going to unc, and dual enrollment transferring without hassle
Like I think AP Lit and Lang are just credit hours and don't count towards a specific class
If you need convincing let me know ;) I love it here
I'm pretty convinced
I'm in between unc and emory and I couldn't rly imagine going to a school with mid sports as lame as that sounds
and the money ofc
oh for sure
and I have so many friends going which is gonna make the transition way easier
Yeah but you can get that for financial aid iirc
Yea i was wrong lol
wait how do I find my email if I have a onyen lol
It would be [email protected] I think
^
i mean you have the onyen email ([email protected]) or you can use the other one
i forgot how you can see it but mine is like
Wait what’s the other one
first initial first name + last name
give me a sec ill see if i can figure out how to find it
yeah I want that lol
if you can get into your outlook and look at your account
it should be under overview
I think that should be fine
@inner quail I’m comin to unc lol
I always forget what major are you
That’s cool
okay idrk how waitlists work but do schools that say they don’t rank waitlists, then allow you to submit additional info and locis, do they rank you or choose you after that? if a spot opens up ofc
wait @inner quail how much do the housing and food actually cost
Depends on which meal plan & housing arrangement you do
I can pull up how much I do for double dorm & cheapest meal plan in a bit
yea that’d be great if you can
ty
I’m just curious to see how much it would cost roughly to get that
anyone know anything abt the accelerated research program? is it only for the first yr?
Any UNC student admit server?
anyone know of an unc ig gc?
We couldnt offer it anymore because the CS dept is underfunded and overcrowded
Same reason we added CS application
If you have your UNC email, you can look at the Discord Hub for club servers
😭
I always forget to ask but how do those applications look? Like what do they ask about and what gives you a good chance
I didn't apply CS, so I don't know what the app itself looks like
Just aim for As in the prereq (a B isnt a reject tho) and write a good personal statement
ah alright
Just remember the purpose of the app process
It's not to weed people out, it's to make sure CS majors get their classes lol
Also do you think you can try to send this to me when ur free?
not really in a rush rn but would be nice to have if I can
Yeah sure I'll try and remember to do it in about 5 lol
@fluid matrix
$3,683/semester for housing (double dorm, Joyner)
$1,690/semester for meal plan ($1,490 for 100 swipes, $200 flex)
And sexy sexy $3,500/sem tuition 🤤
wow
Wait how long do swipes last?
They reset every semester
ah alright
the housing is right around what I’d expect but that food plan is much cheaper
unc seems to estimate about 6k a yr for food
also one last question @inner quail does picking a cheaper meal plan and stuff impact the amount of aid you get since technically you have to pay less?
like I have a sai of around 15k so that’s why I ask
I'm not sure
Yeah I usually supplement by grocery shopping (since it's cheaper than unlimited meal plan) and I go home on weekends
alright I guess that’s a question I’ll have to save for my orientation
ah that makes sense
but yeah thanks for the help
i think thats for 2x unlimited plan
each semester is abt 3k
yeah sounds abt right
Any Indian student admitted to UNC?
✋
Anyone RD got acceptance package yet?
Does everyone get it?
Or in the state students only get these packages?
Can I accepted Morehead Cain scholly now then decline if I get off waitlist from an ivy school?
u guys got a package?
i got in ea and did not get a package from waht irember
Nope
It was like a mail thing
with a little notebook and stuff
oh yeah
Just visited today
How was it? :)
Thoughts?
I thought the campus was really pretty ngl @inner quail @scenic jasper
haven’t been to much campuses but I say it’s still tied for the best I’ve been to
(tied w Michigan)
but tbf scenery wise unc is better
Michigan is good in a different way
Yaya
It gets better around summertime methinks lol
Like rn isnt a bad time but green is just starting to fill in
Summer you get all the green and flowers
Yeah
Ngl I never lived there bc I wasn't very keen on the frat/sorority culture
I think it's also overpriced compared to the dorms
@inner quail do yk when the move in date for fall 2024 is
I'm gonna guess move-in week is Aug 10-18
u think august 15 is cutting it close?
what happens if u dont make it to move in dates
what r ur thoughts on Hojo
I heard Hojo and Koury were nice
but craige is the worst
also r housing apps first come first serve
For first years I think theres a priority deadline where I think its lottery but you get a chance at your preferences, then after that its kinda like filling in the spaces
Ive heard good things abt both Hojo and Koury
is there a resource that condenses dorm info?
I’m thinking of doing:
Hojo
Ehaus
idk (maybe Craige)
wdym
like what type of rooms, distance from main campus, quality, social life, etc
basically best dorms for freshman are ehaus and hojo
Best social life wise
But further from Franklin street
And most other things on campus
These two are both suite style but there are also corridor style
i cant lie i loved north campus
it’s a valid choice but I’m just saying the general consensus
I say look at both see what you like
^
Choose based on how social you are
sorry i got distracted by idiots in gen
lol
i have an onyen login but when i try to log in to the help portal, it takes me to the logout page. anyone know of this issue?
which portal is it
im gonna try it rn
I got in fine so I'm guessing it might be with new accounts
yeah
additionally i created a unc email back in jan, and it has @ad.unc.edu instead of @unc.edu, is that an issue (when i try to go to create and manage email at https://its.unc.edu/onyen-services/ it freezes on a loading wheel)
its a similar thing happening with my other colleges too
mine is the same
@ad.unc.edu is just an email alias
Like [email protected] goes to the same inbox/completes the same function as [email protected]
ok good lol
I think the @ad.unc.edu is more for logins but not sure lol
Btw @worldly aspen what's your intended major
cs
Hella
😭
but im interested in a lot of other things
so if anything it'll be cs with applied smth
For sure
UNC is great for exploring stuff ime :)
I've switched majors quite a few times
i see
i heard the cs application for 2nd year is more of a commitment thing than a weed out
do you know anything abt that?
Yep
It's more to make sure that students who are committed get into the classes than something like biz
ah sounds good
i got honors + will probably get lots of credit through aps so im trying to see what classes i can do for first year
tyty
i got some creds too but idk how many of them will transfer for my gen eds
mine are from local cc so they should transfer
but im just not sure what classes i need lol
ah you mean cc credits
im also cs
you can search up your cc name here
mine dont transfer but thats fine cause i wanted to retake diff eq and lin alg anyways
are you part of honors?
im in honors and they require you to take their english class for 1st year i believe
but idk about non-honors
if it could transfer or not
im going off this
ah i see
yeah honors makes me have to take eng 105 anyways
so ig there is intentional overlap which makes sense
i wish i could test out of eng 105
i got a 5 on lang but i dont even get anything for it lol
yeah we just get out an eng elective lol
which might be useful in later years i think
wait where are the gen eds we need to take
yeah i saw that
im trying to search that rn
alr
idt you can
bc they want everyone to take their english class lol
altho i think transfers might be able to skip it
IDEAs in action is the current gen ed curriculum
These are the things you need to take your first year-ish
Language requirement isn't but you need to do IDST 101, FYS/FYL, Triple-I, and ENGL 105
First-year seminars are usually numbered with 2 digits, but there are also classes that have "first-year launch" sections
You don't need it completed during your first year
You'll need to do the language req by graduation
Mhm
I think Dutch does 3 levels in 2 semesters but generally you'll have to take up to like "Intermediate I"/3 sems of any single language
can you test out of individual levels
I think you can place out of the language requirement
ah alr
There's a language exam you can take for placement
I didn’t take ap but I took everything up to ap at my school so I would say I can get through level 1 but I’m not sure about the rest
alright that’s good
I did Latin 1&2 in high school and placed out of LATN 101
I ended up just taking a different language bc I didn't feel confident continuing Latin lol
oh alright
when it says 3 levels does that mean to 3xx?
what if a course only has a 2xx level?
No
It means like
Intro 1, Intro 2, Intermediate 1
ah i see
So like Japanese you do JAPN 101, 102, 203
Asian & Middle Eastern studies dept is insanely goated
I've only had good experiences
All of my JAPN profs were really kind and helpful (even the "strict" one) and one of my ENGL profs was based in the dept and she was insane (positive)
oh thats cool
@fluid matrix have you sent your ap scores to unc yet? if so can you see your credits in connect carolina?
I haven’t sent my scores to unc yet
but I also haven’t officially committed
just waiting on aid packages
fair
In the extremely unlikely event that umd comes out to be a fair bit under 40k for me
since it’s at 45k rn
(After scholarship)
yeah i went ahead and put deposit cause i got good scholarship
unless i get smth else off of waitlist im prob going
I mean I still expect unc to be cheaper by a fair bit
but I’m considering umd since it’s well established in cs and I don’t need to reapply for major
But those two things are getting fixed at unc
or are closer to being fixed now
i see
How abt you what decisions you have left (waitlists)
a couple but im most favoring duke and vandy
ah
couple others are rice gt and cmu
Guys i'll commit to UNC tomorrow
How does the housing and dorm pairing works?
You can either go random or select a friend to be your roommate
I think you can even do larger groups for suites if you have more than a +1
are single suites 4 people per suite?
I don’t think there are single suites
iirc there’s 2 two person room suites and 4 two person room suites
I stand corrected
i assume its 4 rooms per suite
oh nvm thats craige north
@inner quail how do i change the email address format to first letter of first name + last name again
or is that not possible
(i changed my name so im not billert anymore lol)
You can't change the ad email but thats fine bc you still have your default unc.edu email
yeah i just want to change the front part
if thats possible
the part based on the onyen
Without changing your onyen?
I don't think you can
but both [email protected] and [email protected] route to the same mailbox
the ad.unc.edu one is more for login but they both work
so you can just give people the @unc.edu address and its fine
so its normal for me not to be able to log in with @unc.edu login just the @ad.unc.edu?
alr ty
is it bad i haven’t submitted my loci yet?
I just committed to UNC today.
But I’m unable to access ISSS portal?
Can someone please help me with this
I did created my onyen and also
Depends on how badly you want to attend I suppose
I dont know if UNC accepts LOCIs
It might take a little bit before you can access everything
“Please also ensure we have your most updated grades, which you can upload in MyCarolina. If your school year ends before we notify you of your final decision, please arrange to have your school send us your official final transcript. Beyond these updated and/or final grades, we do not recommend that you send additional materials.”
Any idea when aid comes out?
wdym by best?
like what they’re best known for?
ah
business for sure
and then med related stuff
bio
I’m not sure what else though
Is business competitive to get into
it is but iirc they’re adding more spots to it that boosts acceptance rate a ton
I was gonna go to Carnegie Mellon to do data science
UNC is like 26k cheaper per year than that
ah
why Ds specifically?
It’s just what I’m semi interested in doing lol. And has decent salary/job prospects
ah
honestly idk how to answer your question just cause DS is a iffy major
well by iffy I mean fairly new
I didn’t apply as CS on my application. Can I still do cs or nah
I would like unc a ton if I can minor on cs (I wanted to major in stats and minor in CS), but unc doesn’t have a cs minor
I would be surprised if they didn’t have a cs minor but then again they’re trying to limit number of ppl in cs
Yup, they got rid of the cs minor so more people can major in cs
Kind of dumb
I feel like with the situation they had before it was kind of necessary
not much resources for cs and had people majoring in it struggle to get classes
Yes, UNC doesn't admit by major
They don't have the resources to offer the minor anymore
We're pretty strong all around, just don't have any engineering stuff
Is there an application process to do the popular majors like cs and business ?
Yeah, I can put together a list of all the majors you have to apply for if you want lol
CS isn't competitive at all though
It's less "weed out lesser CS majors" and more "make sure that CS majors get into the classes they need to graduate"
What do you study, Mr googibaba
Biology & environmental science with a certificate in applied data science
What’s a certificate
Gonna do med school?
There are only a few undergrad certificates but it's like a minor but... different lol
Hell no lmao
I'm a data monkey
I'm planning on doing a dual degree ES BS - MSIS
What is that
“Licensed MD” thought you were an aspiring doctor
Environmental Science BS - Master of Science in Information Science
Haha nah
I forgot who told me to put it in my name
But I did
Although I will (hopefully) be working at the med school
Doing bioinformatics/computational biology
What’s the job prospect like for this field
This was what I originally was interested in before I pivoted to data science stuff for the bigger (and better?) job market
Pretty okay I think, will be easier once I land an internship/get done with grad school
I'm looking at NCSU's MS Analytics as well
I want to do data stuff in envsci and biology (evidently) so the more broad masters program should be good
For flexibility/backups
Depends on how this lab pans out tbh
If it works out, I should have a FT job after grad
Odds are I'll still go for the MSIS anyways at some point tho
any predictions if SAT/ACT is gonna be required for this year applicants?
We use test scores as part of our evaluation because we believe that they’re helpful, both to us and to students, when they’re understood appropriately and viewed as part of a larger and much more interesting portrait. Note: The UNC System has waived the SAT or ACT requirement for candidates who are applying for fall […]
I feel like UNC will inevitably go back to test required because the stat inflation has been insane
Or at least test flexible I take this back, I dont think many schools are considering this as an option
what does stat inflation mean, like gpa or?
Any sort of quantitative statistic being inflated
Let me find the ACT example from 2019-2020 and 2022-2023
For UNC:
2019-2020 cycle
- 69% submitted ACT
- 57.5% had a score 30-36
2022-2023 cycle - 32% submitted ACT
- 77.8% had a score 30-36
Less people submitting lower scores has led to an "inflation" in the reported statistic
Its not that people get into UNC bc of the high scores average admitted score is getting higher; people with low scores who get admitted arent sharing the score anymore, making the overall "average ACT" appear higher
ohhhhh got it thanks!
@inner quail what are ur thoughts on ehaus?
im thinknig to room there with my suitemates
rather than a jack and jill or mannign style
I never stayed there but I've heard its fine
it’s said to be one of the best freshman dorms so I assume it’s solid
@inner quail do you know if we can try the dining hall food
I’m considering the amount of meal swipes I’d need to get
I think so, just let them know youre doing card when you "swipe in"
ah you can pay with credit card right
Yep
Hi guys, I committed to UNC today. Is there an insta gc or discord server?
If you have a unc email, you can access the UNC Discord hub :)
been a bit confused on the availability on single suites - the housing website says that ehaus and hojo offers single suites but looking around a little leads to imply that they're double suites - could someone clarify?
Wait what
How do you see that
Idk if its the same on new shitcord layout but at the bottom of the server list (below the +) should be an icon
anyone know abt this
Hojo and Ehaus both have singles, but the likelihood of getting one is very slim
What about the 4s in koury/horton?
Wdym
I dont know anything abt the suites tbh
Just that singles anywhere are the hardest to get lol
Tried 3 years for a single with no luck
I mean the 2 room suites
Idk how likely it is to get one but I'm assuming it's easier than getting a single lol
I hope so
also I ended up joining a few of the unc servers from discord hub
Although none of them were class of 28 related
a lot of the year-specific servers die really quick
Guys i am confused whether to opt in for granville or erhangaus/south campuses
plz plz guide me with this
imo id go south campus, i feel like everyone i talk to who goes granville hates it
still nope
FAFSA is still fucked rn
how does chapel hill and nc state bme school work
I can ask my friend in the program any questions you have?
I'm not sure what you mean by "how it works"
surprised unc hasn’t started yet since im getting stuff from other schools already
there are dedicated buses iirc
if youre interested in BME i think its absolutely worth it, the facilities & alum networks between both schools are fantastic
other publics?
idk if bme for a pre med path is the move but i also wanna do something w like medical devices down the line and like engineering so idk 😭
why not?
i mean you have your first sem or so to figure it out more, you can apply anyways and then re eval after your first year
idk ive just heard from the internet that its not foccused enough on the med pre reqs
but I rlly wanna do like medical devices or like smth along those lines down the line
have you looked at the med prereqs and UNC's BME curriculum
@inner quail how does housing work if you have someone in honors in your suite group?
would they only be allowed to have honors dorms if all of them are in honors?
honors dorms is only cobb i believe, which have corridor style, not suites
I dont think theyre required to live in Cobb if they dont want to?
If 2 (or 3? Dunno if Cobb does that lol) of them want to share a room in Cobb they can break into their own honors group and split rooms there
Its basically either (1) everyone lives in a suite or (2) the honors kids pair up as roomies in Cobb methinks
ah alright
Cobb isn’t suites?
That’s kind of surprising
Nothing on north is suites
That's kinda the thing lol, south/mid is suites, north is halls
ohh it’s north campus
Yeah
idk why I thought it was south
Lol
