imo berkeley academics >=stanford(for stem atleast). What stanford has over it is the fact that its private, and has large endowment--> more prestiege which can help giving you the benefit of the doubt. Stanford has less people which is beneficial at undergrad level in aiding individual attention and creating a less competative atmospher + more research oportunities. But imho, if berkely went private and took in same amount of people i could see it taking stanfords "place" after a few years
