basically we can divide grievances into pre and post materialist phases, pre being mostly before WW2 and the 1960s civil rights/anti war movements in the US. because quality of life was lower before, most movement activity could be characterized by more of a marxist lens because we are thinking about pure class struggle organizing through unions, tenant farmers, etc of people whose material economic conditions were their grievances and motivated revolution

the marxist lens of substantiating revolutionary desires falls apart when you look at the post material motivations for movements for civil rights, women's rights, anti war, environmental, animal rights, and pro democracy

so we can call these "post materialist" values that are more concerned with morality, pursuit of justice, and cultural shifts in issues that are not directly related to one's personal economic condition and more about pursuing a more "just" society. and this correlates strongly to the decommodification of middle class people as quality of life improves and they arent concerned with two principle matters of security from war and having enough money to survive

and thats also why we see so many more "urban civic revolutions" in the middle east, northern africa, and eastern europe in the past 30 years which are sort of mixes of social and political revolutions. the political grievances (corruption, electoral fraud) are somewhat caused by acts of a regime that also create material economic grievances (low wages, unemployment, an unresponsive government bureaucracy), so we see a mix of revolutionary grievances that can be explained both by marxist and post-marxist frameworks of inequality and justice

but the cool thing is my professor was the one who coined the term urban civic revolution lmfaoo

so, mark beissinger (the prof) was particuarly interested in how spatial factors affect revolutions. urban spaces thicken revolutionary potential and violent state repression because thousands of people will gather in central areas (around government buildings or national capitols) to demand a regime steps down and legitimization and democratization of the next regime. basically revolutions occur more frequently when you have spaces of concentrated aggrieved populations trying to topple centers of military, political, and economic power. it's more common for the police to give up, or for authoritarian regimes to lose legitimacy when their power can be contested in such an intimate and physically overtaken way
