fluid sky
#

but i didnt get any ivy+

compact trellis
#

Rice CS feeds well into FAANG

fluid sky
#

uiuc or gt def better lmao

compact trellis
#

Would you go to an ivy+ over GT or UIUC?

fluid sky
#

only if its a decently reputatble ivy+ in stem

#

like not brown for instance

compact trellis
#

Brown CS is really good. Their applied math rank is like 3

fluid sky
#

yeah but im mainly into ai stuff

compact trellis
#

Makes sense but you wouldn't lose too much by going there.

fluid sky
#

thats true as well

#

did u apply cs everywhere?

compact trellis
#

I still considering Duke CS but I don't know

#

Yea CS everywhere

fluid sky
#

depends on what u wanna do

#

some cases duke is better some cases gt

compact trellis
#

I want to do Stats/Math + CS and concentrate in AI and Algorithms. If I can get into quant, I would go industry. Otherwise go to grad school.

fluid sky
#

do you mean either quant or ai?

compact trellis
#

Yeah

fluid sky
#

quant wise i know uiuc is slightly better than the rest in its tier (gt, umich, ut, etc) but gt should be similar to duke if not better due to gt having a much more rigorous curriculum that has been established among employers

#

ai wise gt is definitely better too

#

if you are 100% set on this specilization path then gt all the way, duke better for some less cs heavy more interdisciplinary stuff imo

#

also if u wanna transfer in college gt is prob better πŸ˜‚

compact trellis
#

Yeah, that's true. But, I feel Duke does better than GT for QT roles based on the people that I talked to. I'm pretty sure Duke = UIUC for QT/QR placement.

#

Duke's curriculum is def on the lighter side

fluid sky
fluid sky
# compact trellis Why?

cuz it's easier to reason why u wanna transfer as gt is tunnel visioning cs but everything else is weaker e.g. linguistics

compact trellis
fluid sky
#

for ultra hard reaches i did but most publics i did cs

compact trellis
#

The hardcore CS will def be a minority at Duke but is more of a majority at the UIUC/GT.

fluid sky
#

are you more of a hardcore person?

compact trellis
#

I'm so confused right now. I would've been at CMU but based on my options I'm not completely sure.

#

I would enjoy a more interdisciplinary approach.

fluid sky
#

i think interdisciplinary is the way to go

#

esp in the modern state of the world

#

but of course if u wanna go hardcore ai then theres no need to be interdisciplinary if u wanna just be at the forefront of ai research

compact trellis
#

Yeah the paths def diverge. I guess I have a lot of introspection to do over the next 3 days.

fluid sky
#

also for the record i didnt rlly do much research on gt cs since i know im not going there

compact trellis
#

So you're leaning towards UIUC then?

fluid sky
#

i actually got gt fullride for aerospace before realizing that they announced no more transferring to cs πŸ’€

#

yeah

how helpful are living learning communities

pallid hornet
# solemn dawn or does this differ by each llc

Differs by LLCs somewhat. Talked to a current student. LLCs help you get priority registration for classes needed for certain majors. Like business LLCs gives priority registration for business classes, innovation gives some engineering ones, etc. You also are guaranteed a dorm in a building which would otherwise be a lottery. Also, I heard there are some activities and stuff one would do when being part of the LLC

#

But a current student might answer it better

#

@keen ether yo bro

#

shit i forgot to ask yesterday

#

you there?

keen ether
vestal pier
#

in hypothesis testing

#

when we take p values

#

why are we including extreme values

keen ether
#

You use the "extreme values" to determine how unlikely it is to receive that result

#

Given current parameters of what you think the distribution / parameters you are testing for are

vestal pier
#

say if the population mean is like 0.35

#

and we got a value of 0.21 or smth

#

why dont we just take the probability of that value occuring

#

why are we including extreme values

stable pagoda
#

@vestal pier giving ap stats πŸ’€?

vestal pier
#

yes

stable pagoda
#

😭

vestal pier
#

help bro

stable pagoda
#

do ap scores matter ? I'm only giving exam without class

vestal pier
#

so am I

stable pagoda
#

my school doesn't even offer aps 😭

#

why did I even take it?

vestal pier
#

same vro

keen ether
#

Right

#

So given our hypothesis of 0.35

vestal pier
#

i dont understand why we're including the extreme values

keen ether
#

How unlikely is it that we get 0.21

vestal pier
keen ether
#

P value

vestal pier
#

with the p value compared to the alpha right

keen ether
#

If p value is less than significance

#

Yea

vestal pier
#

i dont understand why p value says

#

probability of the observed and more extreme values

keen ether
#

P value is the probability we see a value as unlikely

#

Given our current data

vestal pier
#

because we dont have a sample with more extreme values right

keen ether
#

It's the probability we see the extreme values

#

Kinda

keen ether
#

So like a coin toss is 0.5

#

Right

vestal pier
#

yea

keen ether
#

If I flip 100 coins

#

And I get 55 heads

vestal pier
#

yea

keen ether
#

That seems fine

vestal pier
#

yea

keen ether
#

We don't have enough data

#

To contradict our estiamte

vestal pier
#

yea not enough evidence

keen ether
#

That p = 0.5

#

But if I get 96 heads

#

Then we have a lot of evidence against it

vestal pier
keen ether
#

So p value is the chance we get 96 heads given our hypothesis that heads prob is 0.5

vestal pier
#

yea

#

what is the p value

keen ether
#

It would be the probability that we get 96 heads

#

If it's a fair coin

#

The p value will be super small

#

So we can reject that hypothesis

#

And say maybe the head prob is not 0.5

#

Maybes it's an unfair coin

#

Stuff like that

vestal pier
#

only 96 heads

keen ether
#

Yea

vestal pier
#

then why in the p value

keen ether
#

Our extreme value comes outta the sample we are testing on

#

So 96 heads is our like test

#

Or sample

vestal pier
#

okay so wait

#

from the earlier example

#

0.35

#

is the population mean

#

and 0.21 is my observed value

#

now i'll find the z score right

#

then what do I do

#

the probability below that z score?

keen ether
#

Yea to the left assuming it's a normal distribution

vestal pier
#

lemme send a pic

keen ether
#

So you find the table entry of that z score

#

0.21 - 0.35 / (std/sqrt(n))

#

Smth like that

vestal pier
#

see this

#

like why or even more extremre

keen ether
#

Ahhh because its tailed

vestal pier
#

what that mean

keen ether
#

Because probability is like area under the curve right

vestal pier
#

yea

keen ether
#

So our p value is the area left or right

#

Of the extreme value

#

So it's the prob we see a value as unlikely or more unlikely than what we found in the sample

vestal pier
#

the only way i understood so far is we cant calculate the probability of that single value so we need to do it for an interval

keen ether
#

Yea

#

That's right

vestal pier
#

and we do it from the extreme till the value we observed

keen ether
#

Well it's extreme to more extreme

vestal pier
#

but i just dont understand why are we considering those from the extreme

vestal pier
keen ether
#

So the very left side

#

Or the very right side

keen ether
#

To disprove

#

Hypothesis

#

So more extreme is the way to prove it

#

96 or more heads

#

Is a stronger statement than just 96

vestal pier
#

wait what

keen ether
#

Cause the probability of just 96 is low

#

But 96 and more

#

Is higher and more extreme

vestal pier
#

but like we dont have a sample with more than 96 heads right

keen ether
#

Gives us evidence

vestal pier
#

to show

keen ether
#

To reject hypothesis

keen ether
#

But we use probability to guess

#

How extreme more than 96 is

vestal pier
#

oh nice

keen ether
#

Cause normal distribution can approximate it

vestal pier
#

yea

keen ether
#

So we can tell how much prob more extreme than 96 is

#

Obv in ap stats it's prob gonna be normal distribution

#

But there's other distributions

#

That can help us determine thus

#

Like exponential

#

Chi sqaure

#

Binomial

#

Etc

vestal pier
#

yea those exist

#

in ap stats

#

chi square

keen ether
#

It's just for large n, normal is a good approx

#

Yea

vestal pier
#

wait so what i still didnt understand is the values of more extreme than 96 right

#

they might have a low probability

keen ether
#

Yea

vestal pier
#

but unless we actually have a value bigger than 96 we cant disprove it even though the probability of it occuring is less than the signficance level

keen ether
#

No if it's less then reject

vestal pier
#

bro like

#

in a normal distribution

keen ether
#

Just saying 96 or greater is low

#

Is enough to reject

vestal pier
#

anything greater than 96

keen ether
#

96 and above

#

Yea

vestal pier
#

is obv gonna be in the top 5% probably right

#

but unless we actually get a value like that we can't reject it right

#

even without a sample

#

u can look at the normal curve and tell that

#

anthing above 96

keen ether
#

Yea

vestal pier
#

will have a certain probability

keen ether
#

You don't need the exact prob of 97 and 98 and 99

#

Cause the distribution helps you figure that out

#

We can rejevt without data of 97 98 99

vestal pier
#

why tho

keen ether
#

Cause we can approximate the chances of those with the distribution

#

Just take the right of 96 on the normal distribution

vestal pier
#

but then every distribution would have values with really low probability right

keen ether
#

And that's the approx for them

vestal pier
#

doesnt mean the mean is wrong

keen ether
#

96 heads is good evidence

#

That it's not a fair coin

vestal pier
#

yea

keen ether
#

In stats we never say something is wrong

#

We just say

vestal pier
#

yea 96 is good

#

but like we dont have a 97 right

keen ether
#

We have enough evidence to prove the opposite

vestal pier
#

to disprove 97

keen ether
#

But it makes sense right

#

If 96 is bad

vestal pier
#

oh wait

keen ether
#

97 is even worse

vestal pier
#

yea tyea

keen ether
#

And we can approximate all of that with normal

vestal pier
#

shit now II get it

keen ether
#

Which is why it's extreme or more extreme

#

Yea

vestal pier
#

so in the 0,35

#

and 0.21 as observed

#

since we got that 0.21

keen ether
#

Yea

vestal pier
#

its likely we get values more extreme

#

so we're considering thoose

#

as well

keen ether
#

P is the prob we get something as extreme or more

#

Yea

#

So on the left side

vestal pier
#

yea

keen ether
#

Anything 0.21 or less

vestal pier
#

yea

keen ether
#

And if that prob is lower than significance

vestal pier
#

disproved

keen ether
#

You have enough evidence to reject

#

Yea

vestal pier
#

so we're considering more extreme values just cuz we already got a really extreme value

#

and its probable we get more extreme values as welel

#

so we include them in the probability

keen ether
#

Yea we are just examining all possible extreme values

#

From the extreme value we get from our sample

#

Yea

vestal pier
#

alr
