#Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (2023-2024)

Whereas in other activities outside of olys, it is actually more blatant that someone is only doing it purely for college. They stopped doing it in college.
but academic rigour is just a threshold lmao like a shitton of people can cope up w mit's rigour
and i didn't specify mit when i wrote that but it's obviously very clear (for other colledes esp) that there are diversity admits.
if they can handle the rigor they are qualified π
after a school deems u can be successful there and have academic curiosity, its then up to you to have a great personality and story/passion that they want in their class
i have a friend (co'23) with multiple research papers published, got into multiple ivies and choose mit. she's almost done with her first semester and she is STRUGGLING so hard because of how hard the classes are. mit is mit.
if you mean diversity admits in the sense that some people got in with a profile that is insane for their circumstances and resources but would seem "lesser" without their context, then yeah those exist but they are admitted with the belief that if they could do so much with a lack of resources, they could do so much more without that lack. however there are no "diversity" admits in the sense that people are taken in just for the sake of a quota
country quota for internationals exists
on second thought this discussion is toeing the line of AA so let's end this here
publishing papers doesn't generally translate to handling hard courses
and if we're doing anecdata then someone with an IMO gold(which is like an upper bound) from my country can definitely do anything thrown at him but he got rejected so..
they had a 1590 sat and took max APs and was valedictorian
again traditional high-school valedictorian and high SAT doesn't really directly correlate to doing well in hard problem-solving heavy courses
high-school classes and APs aren't hard at all (in the college sense)
if you can take too many courses it's just an indicator of your work-ethic
those are typically the hardest classes a high schooler can take
college in general is difficult and mit has some of the toughest courses
my point is if you're admitted to mit, it's because they believe you can handle that
not saying that people who don't get in can't tho
and they can be wrong because people do fail there
not disagreeing with that
at the end of the day, people get admitted because they have the characteristics that the college wants including being able to handle their courses
and i didn't intend to argue about mit in the first place because i've always believed mit is as meritocratic as it gets in the US app game.
it kinda does tho thats why theyve done extensive studies on it and have an established procedure for evaluating academic preparedness
correlation isn't causation but the same qualities that make someone successful in hs/at the say are the qualities that would help them in classes like that even if they haven't had prior exposure
at the sat*
not for academic reasons
fwiw
MIT has one of the highest graduation rates in the country and the students who have to leave are predominantly someone where something unexpected/unanticipated happens in their life
levitating like the yogi from infinite jest why does everyone presume "diversity" and "merit" are set against a tradeoff
@fierce gust i'm sorry you're hitting a wall. the american admissions system sucks hard for intls
because the connotation for a "diversity admit" is generally someone who only got in because of their "diversity" over those who are more qualified
its generally not the case but thats what ive seen the most
ya and what i am saying is that this is the wrong way to think about it
i agree thats just a kind of common sentiment lol
especially with asian communities
oh yes i know
i have been battling this for 14 years
(that post is from 2011)
so i just use every chance i can get to try to hammer it back into the earth for a new audience
my second year in the office i just decided to blog against every misconception i found on collegeconfidential and that produced applying sideways, diversity or merit, and https://mitadmissions.org/blogs/entry/the-difficulty-with-data/
its very hard to hammer in any alternative view of college admissions i.e applying sideways becuase people are more likely to trust what they see firsthand
someone might see a very accomplished asian applicant get rejected and a less accomplished hispanic applicant and get in and correlate that asian = hard to get into mit and other race = easier to get into mit
the same with applying sideways: if kids who actually pursue their passions get rejected while some other kid who had a consultant just very carefully crafted/fabricated a profile and got in, that person is going to think that applying sideways doesnt actually help
no amount of blog posts is actually going to convince someone whose seen a different reality themselves because people tend to be naturally skeptical of things that arent themselves
skill issue
thatβs because they still have the wrong mindset
applying sideways isnβt a rule for getting into MIT
itβs a way to not be sad
itβs a way to accept the things you have no control over and live the best life within what you can control
it is the monk who climbs to the top of the mountain and asks the Buddha the secret of immortality
if applying sideways is do what u love then whats appying forwards and applying backwards
applying forwards is with some sort of fixated and impossible overconfidence on a narrow goal
applying backwards is idk man I was shitposting poetically
LMAO
applying backwards is actively sabotaging urself for admissions
yyou commit as many felonies as possible
to make sure you are an auto reject
applying backwards is like when you do stuff that seems actively counterproductive but it helps you anyway through some way you coupd@have never predicted
thatβs how I got my job at MIT admissions more or less now that I think of it
godβs most fortunate clown
isnt that just applying sideways to an extent
u play yugioh all day
and somehow u become really good at it
and make a shit ton of money
oh yeah
how much money would i need to wire into an AO's bank account to get in ut hink
like 50m?
one ao doesnt make the final decision alone
so you'd need to send every ao the same amount
ohhh damn
dang
Damn this is such a great article
ππ
π
ππππ
OMG THAT'S A LIKELY LETTER
what if u get into harvard
to be honest we should have these
how many red flags would have to be on my application to recieve a letter of disinterest
im tryna be the first one
world record holder
that's a thing??
imma make it one.
ok lol
if you think about it mit is the ut dallas of cambridge, ma
what
Upon embarking on a reflective journey of introspection, one would inevitably arrive at the realization that the Massachusetts Institute of Technology stands as an imposing and meticulously constructed analogue to the University of Texas in Dallas, albeit distinguished by its geographical location nestled within the bustling confines of Cambridge, ensconced within the historic and intellectually vibrant state of Massachusetts, rather than being situated within the urban sprawl of Richardson, situated within the expansive state of Texas.
π
are mit interviews selective for intls (europe) @grave token
fr lmfao
π π π
also? mit rd results are literally out? what is bro trying to achieve
could be for next year
did that take down that mit 2028 acc by the igotin thing π
lmfao
MIT did not accept me but I will be across the river
You can still take classes at MIT so honestly still a w π«‘
There isn't a river between harvard and MIT?
Hmmm
I thought Harvard was across the Charles River
could bew rong tho
I've never been
nah they are both in Cambridge
across the river from the other boston colleges but not eachother
MIT and Harvard are like 10-20min walk from eachother
bro you're going to harvard
no reason to pretend to go to MIT
LMAOOO I know I'm just joking
you'll get an amazing liberal arts education and be able to take any STEM classes you want over here
Oh I'm sure you will
even doing CS at harvard it is still a liberal arts education
I probs won't cross-register since they won't count for GPA after this year
since that is simply the style of school which harvard is
I wouldn't worry about that man
fr
You have the best education opportunities in the world available right now
utilize them to learn anything/everything you can
without focusing on silly things like GPA
imagine I go to Yael for CS
not saying disregard your gpa and fail all your classes or anything
but focus on actually utilizing the resources available to you and doing what you love vs some silly number
Nah I'm going to Harvard I already know Imma be making Bs/Cs
Harvard is fairly grade inflated, or so I've heard
if u got into mit (firstly congrats!) and have questions, or interested in joining a fraternity shoot a dm
nvm one of the best school
is it really hard to get into mit without olys
even w olys its hard to get into mit
olympiads are just very quantifiable
its easier to see where you stand when ur top 20 us compared to when u have like a similar achievement
the vast majority of us did not do olys
no
its hard to get into mit period
without olys is not the distinctive factor making it harder
i didnt have shit lol
YOU GOT INTO MIT STANFORD AND HARVARD?
@misty depot bro's giving you a run for your money
LMFAOOOO NAHHH
im nowhere near that tier
just got lucky isstgπ
lucky cracked
Ofccc
not in the sense that you need an olympiad or else its relatively impossible
im pretty sure the majority of students at mit have not done olympiads
i did not.
Yes
no way you get into all of H/S/M on luck
have u decided on where ur gonna go
so lost
wlβed
Why is mit admissions still sending me newsletters after waitlisting me..
I got this as well π (also wl)
Consider the Harvard diss track
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMM3z3o6BAs
I thought Fleet Street was a comedy a cappella group? WELL THINK AGAIN because these bars are no joke.
Harvard is broadly considered around the #1 university in the world, so we thought they could take lines like...
Yo biologists so dumb, they cannot even tell
the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.
π
Directed by Liam McGregor
Rapp...
you should choose non mit to let more ppl in from the waitlist π
colleges overadmit because they know their yield % generally
so it's not really a declined spot = 1 spot on waitlist
but more declined spots is still more waitlists in π±π±π
actually has mit admitted less people this year than it normally does in RD?
Its like 1275 vs ~1340 ish normally
πhopefully this isnt due to high ea yield
L + mad + cope + ratio
bruhs forgot gates
wait just
out of curiosity
for ppl that got in
did mit ask u to send ur official ap scores through collegeboard
like even before getting in
not the official send, but i sent in like the pdf of the overview of all the scores
Ah gotcha thank you π
Are there admittance statistics for class of 2028?
yes
acceptances: some number
waitlists some number:
rejections: me π¦
π¦π«΅π«΅
dual enroll at mit
u basically got it fr
Lol
does MIT ever overadmit idk how they take so little people off the waitlist if ppl chose not to go
theres no way that that few ppl choose to not go (im coping on WL)
maybe because they know that their yield is consistently 85%, so they just do # in target class= number admitted so they dont need to take people off waitlists
if its that consistent thats insane
more than 75%
Have not^ right?
correct
rough but anchored estimate
itβs just that the academic competitions are extremely Loud Online
Yeah I thought I had no chance cause I didnβt do Olympiads and then I was pleasantly surprised to see that was not the case
me asf
11 waitlists moment
yea, i feel like olympiads give people something to congregate around and work together towards which is why they feel so prevalent
aops, phods, cods, are all examples of this lol
and not everyone who does olympiads gets into mit
its also easier to quantify
yo yo yo how's ma MIT guys doing
personal experience π
wait were u a camper lol
100 spots π
watch petey come in and say "we don't have a limit on the number of offers we give to international students" because it's true, they don't
... but they do
i mean sure it's not an exact quota but still
i mean technically the quota is the class size
like in theory they could admit the entire class from internationals
they just never would in a trillion years
that's in fact not true
(there is a limit on the number of international students set by faculty policy)
Anyone else going to the tour on the 23rd?
what if your visa status sets you as intl but youve studied HS in the US
are you still intl or domestic
oh π mbmb
someone should mail me a wide tim sticker π₯Ή
i was just looking at this database regarding IMO from different yeears and found this quite curious hehe
USA-B in 2019
and Ghana C in 2023
what is that?
HMM
IMO to MIT AO confirmed
MassTech better π€§
so true
this is a decent university
(Complete Silence)...
i was too lazy to apply here

There's no hope, I was rejected as a recruited athlete
Jk ofc plenty of ppl got incbut goodluck, admissions r ROUGH
Start planning out your app from now, you will not regret it π
i wrote the top comment lal lul it's a huge cope
It's all cope when it comes to mit
fr I binge ate canada
any WL come out yet for mit
no
has anyone gotten access to their student email yet?
i did! you have to login through outlook tho
How do they accept international students? Are they generous with scholarships etc.?
