Getting mit interview in a few minutes
ANYWAYS!
GL!!!
Wdym? like you're DOING IT IN A FEW MINUTES?
you're gonna crush this!
yes
are you intl?
oh wow
OK good luck
be confident
go with the interview flow don't try to force anything
even if you plan to talk about a topic if it goes another way just keep with the flow
speech & debate, robotics, weekly publication, math/chess (also research programs I did in 9th/11th grade summers and math self-study in 10th grade summer but added those to addtl info)
u?
gl to yall who’s applying this cycle!!
🫡
this is pretty good btw!
u definitely got a shot
now go rizz up your interviewer
Mine was obsessed with my passion project fr fr
already done (she did the same research program I did and I know her debate coach from when she was on high school)
what program?
garcia
Wait Garcia summer scholars or whatever?
ye
I was going to but then I saw how many supps it had 💀
i'm sobbing the naviance looks so bad
BRUH SAME
I AM FURIOUS I WILL NEVER GET OVER THAT
I wish I knew what MIT Primes was before this year lol
- My Tech Startup (Software Engineering & Tech Consulting; 100K Revenue)
- Campaign Manager for Local Town Council Candidate, County Clerk of Court Candidate, and State Senator candidate
- Class President (I kinda regret this one idk)
- Online political simulator I developed (30K users; only 600 active rn in progress of developing second version) (Not-for-profit game so 0 Revenue but still good)
And then kinda a faux EC which is baked into my essay is non-profit work that I did.
damnnn
?
I put Class President to kinda mellow it out with some school related stuff
if u dont mind, what is your online political simulator called?
It has IRL info abt me on dev page or I would 😦
i legit used to play political simulators a LOT during covid lmao
bro got the most impressive ecs and is like "theyre not good enough" 😭
oh rip
yah rip
I don't know. I try to be pessimistic about MIT admissions because even though it's been my dream for so long, I don't want to be as disappointed as I know I am going to be.
bro why did you put class president on there lmao
tbh MIT should be seen as a lottery
its good
shows leadership
Class President shows leadership in my peers
As a school activity
its not caltech where they ltierally say they dont care about well roundedness lol
I think of it as MIT is still a school. ECs that aren't school related are great like my business or my development or my politics
But MIT still wants to know you're going to be a good fit for their community in school
so I put Class President
Everyone has it tho I put that shit 7 on my ECs list
Lol
I'll DM my full list of ECs
Well it doens't matter already submitted
But some of my other big ECs are written about already so no need to include them both
bro what ive never ran for a single position 💀
I used robotics to talk about this 🤷
And the summer program I did
My other ECs are Software Development/Business, Software Development, and Politics
w
which summer program did u do?
I needed a school-related one
Other than Class President I mean I was FBLA President but I already had business stuff on there
I am FBLA president*
I am Science Club President but it's obvious I'm good at science if I'm applying for engineering lol
History Club President but irrelevant
I was over tech for 2 non-profits (both in my essays so no need to mention)
Class President was the only logical one
to fill the 4th
Beaver works at MIT
It’s their cs eng summer program
how hard is it to get in btw
oh
The sub program I did was 10%
quantum would definitely be lower like 5 maybe
I did qubit by qubit years ago
Idk how it looks in apps but it was fun
thats diff from bwsi
Sure I mean they could try it as well
@sinful sky is ur Interview virtual?
Was your interview virtual last year?
Yes
oh? When did you get yours last year?
Cause even I'm waiting for mine
He said closer to January when he did RD last year
But EA decisions come out Dev 10-20
So they have to be done between now and then
exactly
Bro istg I need the interview
Are you international
yeah
Do you live in a city or a rural area?
City
25th
exactly
there is 0 penalization for no interview so if you don’t get one don’t worry
Bangalore. It's the IT Hub of my country India
But i was hoping it'd give me an edge tho ://
I'll just hope for the best
Did you get yours?
Ah it’s probably just a long list of interviewers. i wouldn’t worry too much!
Yes I got mine yesterday at like 8 PM EST
yupp
all the besttt
u got this
If I applied to mit on November 1st when would I get an interview (if I do ofc)?
i had my interview on nov 1 but yes
When’d u apply?
29th
how do you get qualified for interviews??
it all depends bc I applied like 10/21 and haven’t gotten an interview 💀
would I even get one cause I submitted on Nov 1
based on interviewer availability 🤷
Is it bad to not get an interview?
Nahh
Word
do u guys think its fine to write about covid in this essay: How did you manage a situation or challenge that you didn’t expect? What did you learn from it?
since MIT doesn't have a covid prompt other than their additional info
no
use addl info
Depends on what you'll write about tbh
It is cliche and it's very likely that many others would/did do that
but if it shows a great personal growth without going into classic cliches, I'd say go for it
just remember to never write about tragedy
yea its like not a full covid essay
its like how covid sparked me to do something
its not a tragedy thing
yeah then sure
the actual difficulty in the difficulty essay isn't really important
it's what you did that's important
it is good to show a little bit struggle though
I’m nervous for@my interview tmmr but at the same time I’m also not
I dont have any notes. Not sure if that’s good or bad
I just feel like the best case scenario is that I talk with the flow so it’s actually my@voice and not me reading off my resume
dont bring your resume
you're not supposed to
also, does anyone know if MIT considers non core classes (ie: band, art, pe) in GPA
They do
First it’s virtual
So I could have it there if I really needed it
But second I said I didn’t want to lol
then make a notepad file with bullet points to cover for all the common questions
but like one thing per max because otherwise it will be obvious
There are ways to have your notes sit transparently above the zoom screen
That is how I cheat on behavioral interview
lmao
Lol
or just.. split screen?
What kind of notes though? I know what I’m going to talk abt and I obviously know what I have done
Like do I really need notes?
take every advantage you can
already taking an L by during it virtual
so take some W's on the other side
Why am I taking an L by doing it virtual?
doing an interview in person is better for obvious reasons
if its an option/possible
I don’t know that I agree lol
I’d love to do an in person one just to get to know them more
But I think virtual provides me a better level of comfort to be calm and concise for my interview
Though like I said what notes should I have? Like I know my accomplishments should I be noting something else specifically?
I think I’ll write something abt Why MIT
And keep it up on my screen
i think every question you think could be asked and then one bullet point about a story you could tell
look up a few common interview questions
like "Who are you"
holdup i got u
i can telll you what my interviewer asked
for an MIT interview, the questions i was asked where:
Tell me about yourself
Why MIT
Tell me about a time you overcame a challenge
Tell me something your proud of
Who's a hero to you in your life
Why should MIT admit you
What do you do at school
What do you think about your school
What do you do outside of school
I disagree
Virtual interviews are better
You're more relaxed
You can hear the other person perfectly
Because of headphones
You can look at notes easily
average high schooler take deadass
If your a personable person you can rizz up any interviewer in person so well fr
Nah bro I had both types of interviews many times
Both are okay, in person just doesn't really have any advantage
Maybe not from your perspective
But in general interviewers prefer in person
At least for jobs
and college interviews are similar
my interviewer legit said he was glad we where doing it in person
What does it matter?
Their report won't change based on what they prefer
What you say will change it
And in virtual you're more likely to be able to say everything you want
are u serious
Yes?
Do some thinking and figure out why thats silly on your own at this rate lmao
They can't put you at disadvantage just because your interview is virtual
You should think about this lol
This is really fucking obvious and cannot believe I have to say it
But in the real world you are not always measured on just your merits
Ah also virtuals are recorded, they can rewatch to write the report more clearly
Yeah and what you're doing different in real life than virtual interview?
They're still hearing the same words
💀 Find me one interviewer that prefers online over in person
I don't see how does that have anything to do with merits
My interviewer I had a week ago
you're intl your case is a lil diff id imagine
Don't remember saying interviewer was in a different city
wild then
still as a rule of thumb i'm pretty sure you'll find most interviewers prefer in person
maybe thats just the culture where i am
but in general i think if youre a good talker and have a good presence in-person is to your benefit
If you're a good talker in doesn't matter if it's in person or not
If you can talk in person, you won't have difficulty online
The other way around doesn't work though
Well I interviewed at least 10 people, half was online
My friends did the same as well
If you're communication skills shine in person that generally speaks a lot louder in person, since most people waffle
how have you taken 10 college interviews already 🤨
I said I interviewed
Ah also, I took college interviews last year
u @ MIT?
No I was waitlisted
rip
Well I reapplied
oh shit 💀
gl!
It doesn't matter that much. They're not interested in your resume but if you find good topics to talks thanks to it, then it's okay
You too
who cares enough to rewatch
I think biggreen who's done interviewing and is a consultant said it doesn't hurt to bring one
basically to ask if they want it, so you have the option open
Interviewers who care about the applicant
mit it seems like ur not supposed to
other colleges i think its pretty standard?
They won't reject you because you brought resume, it doesn't hurt
You hold the power to decide what to talk about
If you keep talking about your resume, then it's your fault
If you use it for ideas about more interesting stuff, I'd say it's better you bring it
It’s a personal preference. It doesn’t matter virtual or not. Infact, I know two alumni’s from MIT who are doing only virtual interviews even though they live in the same area as the applicants.
Would I have preferred in person? Yes! I’d love to meet someone from MIT. But I don’t think it will have any adverse affects on my outcome.
yeah my interviewer lives probably like half an hour from me but it's still on zoom
he didn't give the option to do it in person
Yep. Some interviewers themselves prefer Zoom, some prefer in person
But alike, they are going to give you the same “write up” either way
yeah, i hope my dude is chill
apparently he's an author and anthropologist, which is really interesting considering MIT
got my interview finaly (i submitted on nov 1st)
Interview in 16 minutes
trying to figure out what to put on my activities list, should I add all my CS / math related activities, or mix it up a bit? Do they want a huge CS spike or some diversity? If i did a huge CS spike, then in my essays I would write about my other activities (for example, in the what do you do for fun essay i could write about playing and watching tennis)
cuz on one hand i dont wanna seem like a robot with my stats and CS related stuff, but at the same time i wanna make sure my activities list is cohesive and demonstrates my love for cs and math
For me personally, my activities were diverse.
I feel like this is where you can see the distinct difference between MIT and Caltech really. MIT is, obviously, a big STEM school. They pride themselves on engineering, math, science all that cool stuff that probably most of our ECs are going to skew too. However, MIT is also a good school for the humanities. They want a well-rounded student. They want someone who isn't just going to stay in their dorm and study 24/7 or code 24/7 the ywant someone who is going to add to the community as well.
So for me, I opted to diversify my ECs by putting 2 CS/Business (my spike) 1 school related and 1 politics/community
I then wrote about, for the most part, CS/Business in my applications as well as non-profit work and community work.
omg does everyone have a nonprofit
yeah thats a good point, i need to show throughout my application in what ways ill add to the community besides coding and math
i could talk about club tennis, being a part of the sandbox program, etc
top 3 for econ but for the other humanities they really arent all that
not a non-profit but a lot of people do something in that vein
for example i founded a coding bootcamp for my county that runs every summer
how long was your interview? @austere vapor
I showed up early on accident I didn't think he was going to be in there lmao
its generally polite to show up 10-15m early to an interview
Mine went from 12:40-3:11
good stuff
nice!
He was literally me from the future ngl. He had a degree in political science, but he has been programming and developing software since highschool and is now a software engineer
(literally me)
thats pretty cool
i dont get the poli sci degree part legit a fake major
he do grad or undergrad at mit?
undergrad
my guy did it for grad at the same time that he was working a job so he only did like 1 class at a time
Noice
mine had a masters in comp sci and EE but does financial consulting lmao
interview T-21 😭😭😭
GOOD LUCK
ahdhfjaklad
DID IT GO GREAT?
idkkk
wdym you don'tk now
WHAT WERE THE QUESTIONS PLEASE TELL US
like?
you know only two of the questions that you were asked were asked to me; I guess the interview questions are on an interviewer-basis @austere vapor
yeah i think the only one youre 100% gonna be asked is tell me about yourself
worlds most common interview question
"Why MIT" is asked by all
It's the only one that is required by MIT yah
how long was it
could be worse yeah
idk i don’t think he was too interested
what were your questions (im asking like im gonna get an interview 🤡)
still no interview?
nope
don't worry it's not joever yet
you said michigan right
do you live clsoe to detroit?
suburbs
wtf
like 1 hour away at most
wait what
I know for a 100% fact they're alumni in the detroit area
check pins
you should get one soon
its definitely joever
no
i was wondering if az had different ones
similar ish
but different order (?)
oh interesting
at minimum be ready for:
- tell me about yourself
- why mit
- what do you do outside/inside of school
My interview wasn't as question based, we have the exact same interests and infact the exact same career that I want and have been pursuing (software engineer) so we had so many things to talk about it that the questions were strangely the SECONDARY part of the interview
thats cool
ill just continue waiting 😭
when do you guys think i should stop waiting
damn ig ill just be stressed for the next 1.5 months
A girl that is a junior at MIT said she got her interview the DAY before decisions came out
And what my interviewer actually said is that sometimes MIT AO's will view your application and send out a message saying "Hey, we need an interview for this person."
no
there are so many interviews to be done and there are NOT many Alumin Volunteers
my interviewer did engineering and im interested in econ but my passion project goes hard so that carried otherwise i woulda been done fo
dec 15.
he said they aim for the Saturday in the middle of December
Which would be the 16th
QB NCM get on Dec 1 thats crazy
wild
ivies is dec 15 right
a lot of schools are dec 15
well idk abt brown but it should be dec 15
I couldn't EA to any ivy because they all do REA
oh also important note for the questions pinned in general as far as this goes:
he only really explicitly asked:
- tell me about yourself
- why mit
- why should MIT admit you (paired w/ above)
- what do you do outside of school
why should mit admit you is a tough ass question to answer in a humble way
I did such a good move bro
I wore my companies merch shirt (its a shirt that has my company's logo and name) and so when he asked what it was called I showed him my shirt
was it a woman
u right lmao
but like
we where talking about doing amatuer rocketry
and it was actually perfect
and then he was asking me about my programming projects and got to talk about doing like complex physics simulations with like magnus effect and quadratic drag for it
and that was like exactly what he'd done at his actual job
w
that and HAM radio
ham radio is a win
HAM radio lol
LMAO WHAT
NAH UR JOKING BRO
nope dead serious
no way
had been retired for like 20 years
thats crazy
yeah
which is also why i went for an in person interview
i figured older people might care about that stuff more
otherwise i woulda gone in person so i could have like a notepad up on my computer
i didn't keep a notepad on my monitor lol
i didn't take any notes tbh
i know myself and i knew what to talk abt
tbh i wish i coulda spent more time in my interview talking about stuff other than my passion project
but oh well
he seemed interested in it so we spent like the entire time on it or hopping back to it

💀 defo not it went very well
but ofc i wish i coulda added more in retrospect
hindsight bias and allat
it actually lowkey has me delusional thinking im gonna get in
LMAO me too bro
its wild
because my app is defo better from the people i know from my school who've gotten in
but way worse than all the IMO tryhards
at the end of my interview my interviewer told me I had a good chance of getting in lol
he said i have a decent chance early but if i dont get in early i'd probably just get waitlisted regular
oh well

0 get off waitlist
32 did last yr
out of 619
yeah

praying my LOR's and EC's come through for me
my essays where pretty fire too
i like how Character/personal qualities is the only very important
just read that lol
you know mit doesn't do
any honors for graduation?
they don't do class rankings iether
so theres no valedictorian or salutatorian
there i no cum laude
🤷 some schools dont even do gpa
wait yall asked your interviewers what they think of your admission chances?
No
He said it unprompted
Do NOT ask your interviewer about your chances that’s a way to get them to write a red flag on your report lmao
i figured lmao
i would never ask my interviewer that lmao 💀
Oh ok good
Yah he just told me at the end
He said I had good chances and he’d be surprised if I was rejected
ok guys my interview is later this week
did you guys who already had an interview bring anything special to show them
i think getting into MIT is the big achievement out of all of it tbh
Just my company shirt lmao
@flint wigeon when's your interview again?
uhm like 6 hours ago LOL
gotta get the company pants on too
Wrong, my friend did
Btw guys try to not seem to arrogant about your stuff
I heard many students do it even without knowing
From interviewers
☠️
according to the CDS of 2022-23 0 were admitted of the waitlist
THOUGH I think thats for Fall of 2022
So yeha you're probably right
yes that's for the last year
waitlist is actually a lottery
id cry if i got waitlisted
im so delulu i rly be thinking imma get in
fr 💀
my essays are fire but i just realized i think i wrong "send" instead of "sent" in one of them
L typo 😭
not sure if i corrected it or not
bruh
im delulu because i dont know if i fixed it in the app or fucked it up in my apps doc after clicking yes on random autocorrect stuff
either way the essays themselves are heat so idc
rip
Did you apply anywhere else other than MIT
rip no acceptances?
I think having an interview for MIT really helps boost your confidence perhaps to our detriment @austere vapor
The thing that really boost my confidence is having a better app then the previous admits from my school
But they get that girls double admissions rate lol
Huh?
as in the admit rate for girls is ~2x that for non-female applicants
to my knowledge
but im nonbinary and put that on my app though i dont think they care about gender just sex
who knows
wouldnt want a boost for that either way
i think that is wrong
which part
as in - ethically wrong
💀 which part
That women have a boost in admissions
oh no I didn't mean anything like what you think I meant

phew
That would be wild to say here
real
But yeah I don't disagree and I think people should be judged by their merits
but to be fair a class composition of 70% men would be weird
I've seen so much about MIT having a higher acceptance rate for females
But never really a reason
I assume it's because of something like they have had to worker harder due to stereotypical/historical sexism
or maybe the reason that they have 2x admission rate is because there are 1/2 the amount of males applying
Imma be honest there is a non-zero chance the average female applicant has a better applicant than the average male applicant
Women generally dominate the top of class ranks
I think it's different based upon region lol
nebraska is a fair assumption
fake state but still
oh god home state of thomas jefferson hs
oh 💀
interestin
forgot it was very regional
absolutely cracked school
I'm in the yeehaw part of the state lmao
yeeehawww
relatable
naw just small town masshole
ah ok
win for MIT admissions though we consistently send 1-2 a year out of a class of <130
oh 😦
and all i can say is im the only qualified applicant at my school rn fr fr
no one has ever made it to MIT from my school
Actually, no one has made it to any T20 from my school
Well I think UVA was 20th for a while
dont really count for instate ngl
Well they're 24th now
Not a single person has made it to a current T20 from my highschool
my school does GPA really fucked (counts band/music as more than an AP 💀 and counts electives like art/gym with really strong weighting) so we have an odd splattering of T20-T50 admits across the top 2 deciles
then everyone else goes to random schools
which is fucked because it makes it impossible to get into the top decile unless you do band/orchestra/chorus
That you could be like beat for Valedictorian just because someone took band
like i have straight A's with 6 AP's but some bum doing 3 band courses with an A+ in all of them and 3 AP's beats me
yup
fortunately i think colleges will normalize the grades to just core classes w/ even weighting so W me I guess?
Class rank is only considered at MIT
And because its your Academic GPA I think they undo band, choir, guitar, things like that maybe
my school doesnt officially report so i didnt put it in my app
or well if we where supposed to i didnt
its not on my official transcript i mean when GC sends it in
oops
Yeah at a coffee shop not too far from my area
Oh god it's 4 minutes from my HS
I've had conversations with a few different MIT people about interviews, and of course had mine. A few of the major things that they felt were extremely important were:
-
Why MIT? - All of the alumni/current students I have talked about have boasted about this being THE question. They want to know if you are going to be a good fit for MIT and they aren't interested in "it's a top university for my major"
-
Tell Me About Yourself - All of them also said that they wanted to get to know your story. Not necessarily your credentials for your academic excellence, but rather what you are and what your core values are as a person.
-
Your Passion/What MIT Can Do to Help you achieve your goals/passion - A lot of them are going to want to understand what you're passionate about and what MIT is going to offer you to achieve them. My interviewer straight up asked me "What is MIT going to give you to allow you to achieve your own way of changing the world?"
-
Another big thing that a lot don't actually do, is to ask questions about the BAD about MIT. It lets them know that you aren't just choosing MIT for the prestige. You show that you are interested in actually understanding what MIT is about, what they have to offer, and even ||unfortunately|| what they are bad at.
-
If you have any cool projects/portfolios/research you can bring it along. They love to see things, just make sure you only bring it out if the conversation naturally gravitates towards it or it is brought up.
there @modern lava
there are a few random questions you'll get asked so be prepared to have hard questions that make you thonk
Thanks for giving me some more stuff to pin
Fr tho thanks
You're welcome
The decision dates for QB and EA are just barely a month away, it's horrendous
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Mood
Delulu is the solulu
My interviewer is confident in me so it made me confient in myself
Hypeman interviewer 😳
He emailed me again yesterday and told me that he had a great time on our interview
made me feel bad
I should've been the one to email him first 😦
brudda u gotta send an email the day after the interview
professional etiquette cmon now
THAT WAS MY PLAN
HE SENT IT TO ME LIKE 3 HOURS AFTER
oh lol
My interview was yesterday smh
how much do we be thinking the MIT programs help with admissions at MIT (RSI, MITES, BWSI, WTP, SSP, LaunchX(?))
Not much
?
u dont know what rsi is?
MIT Admissions Office has stated that MIT Programs such as MIT Primes have very STRONG academic criteria that are required to get in, but ONLY academic criteria. MIT's selection criteria does not align with high profile pure academic programs. That pure academic criteria isn't all that MIT is looking for and really isn't even the most IMPORTANT thing
So, yes, it speaks to your intelligence and academic strength
But as far as helping you a ton in MIT admissions? Not really.
Tfw through the grapevine I've actually heard of someone that actually did RSI
I met a bunch of them at the MIT college fair for summer program students
smort ppl
it seems like what it actually takes to get in is really just mostly previous research experience for a large part tho
only 1 person from my state got into RSI 💀
For some reason they ended up at homecoming - and they were hanging out with a friend of a friend - who they subsequently facetimed, for whatever reason
Iirc they were actually really chill
And also happened to be one of Elon Musk's sons
And, of course, his dream school was MIT
why does the lore get so wild
Ngl just from hearing about him I really like the dude and want him to get in, but man this competition 😭
Welcome to L.A.
the person that got into rsi from my state last year went to like one of those international science olympiads and also beat cancer in hs
RSI people are built different fr
they're also super nice 😭
That's the dilemma bro
iz wild
only part that probably helps is the LOR's from them
tbh
Like, you wanna be jealous of them because they're so accomplished - but then you can't even remotely rationalize it because they're legitimately really nice
idk im not even jealous
im just like so proud of them
idk if they even remember interacting with me once
True, especially if it's in a state like yours where only a few people manage to do it
It's like seeing someone in your hometown make it big
And then if they are from your hometown
Local pride fr
We all 'gon die on December 14th huh (Dec 1 for me)
i thought it was december 17?
dec 17/18 iirc?
I just wanna say this again - this place is fucking wild sometimes
Like, from my HS, if you go in one direction for a few miles you'd end up at the Kardashians' house, and in the other direction you'd end up in what's essentially the Ghetto
It's boring most of the time ngl but sometimes you legit just hear of some wild shit happening
Dec 16th @austere vapor @modern lava @raw spoke
They aim for the middle saturday in december
september. so real
my bad
u good lol just messing
dang 1 day off 😔
ok kinda necroreplying but still
our school has a 6 year streak of no MIT acceptances 😔
you will !
but this year we have 4 applicants 💀💀💀
nah
Otherwise I either got 100% in or 100% out
they do claim that if you are not contacted for an interview
it wont hurt ur app
so its probably fine either way
Yeah
Logically it shouldn't anyway
They don't always interview someone
They may request "this person needs interview for decision"
So if you don't get interview it could also mean that you don't need it
Which could mean your app is very strong or very weak lol
i think they try to interview everyone?
Do we think MIT is easier to get into if you're trying to do econ as opposed to like CS or Eng.
U still need great math history
captain of the competitive math team and top scoring in the entire league fr fr! i got that math down good
mit doesnt admit by major at all iirc
Ur required to take multivar calculus to graduate regardless of major (hence why i am not applying to mit)
colleges still consider ur preparation for ur major
^
my interviewer said its more cuz they're stats nerds and want to see if people stick to it too
in the case of MIT, applying as a history or gender studies major will be nearly as competitive as applying for computer science or engineering. Yes your major matters in that MIT wants you to be a "good fit" for ur major, but MIT is selective enough & has open enough curriculum that applying for a "less competitive major" wont affect chances too much
in fact applying for a less competitive major could hurt you if your story doesnt suggest a fit for that major
I'm aware
I never said it would make it easier 💀
no
MIT AOs don't consider intended majors whatsoever during the admissions process
Even though one of the required short responses is about your "major" it's actually specifically worded as "course of interest"
Over 50% of all MIT admits decide to major in something that they had little prior experience in or had no interest at all before coming to the institute.
I never said intended major
I mean
Impressive accomplishments in econ for example as opposed to something impressive in cs
a econ admit is probably more likely than a cs one in that case no
no
I'm dying for MIT decisions to come out tbh
if i could just have the decision rn id take it
me too
well same 💀
If you go to a school without T5 acceptances the unwritten rule is that you basically have to be perfect
Oh you’re intl too

It’s less about them being so selective and more about there being less bandwidth for gender studies ppl
we have other T5 though
like every year at least 3-5 💀💀
just not MIT :(
oh then your school probably not super stem oriented
They exist but idk of any intls that got in without very strong oly performance
yeah 😭
||i do, but would no golds affect that?||
nah lmao
Smth like IOI/IPhO?
If you've medaled at intl you stand a solid chance
ibo n iol
okok i can only pray at this point
but tyty
How bout ssp
Summer science program?
Yeh
yeah no one has gotten into MIT from my school in the past at least 5 years, hoping to break the streak. i saw somewhere that arkansas is ranked 49th in the US for top college admissions lol
i have a good a shot as anyone except for the fact that my region doesn't emphasize academics at all and i didnt get to do many academic competitions, im learning about all of them now when im applying lol. though my resume is way better than everyone else at my school so hopefully that helps me
MIT doesnt care what state you're in
also i legit don't think you have to be that wild to get in
i know some people from my school who've gotten in with only like robotics team and 0 state level awards
yall gonna pop off and get acceptance i believe
heres a true and real fact: most people probably come off as unlikable in essays and interviews and get rejected
because most applicants are academically qualified
My Interviewer actually ended up talking about that (I asked if she's able to see how her previous interviewees decisions went) and she said that she felt that modern college admissions was almost random sometimes 💀
well can they or not lol
also im curious do MIT interviewers give a strong accept/accept/waitlist/reject or do they do 1-6 rankings or what
Yes!
i heard it was like 3 categories or something
or thats cool
They write a essay-format report
well yeah but do the AO's actually read the whole thing or do they get a summary and numerical ratings
i know they take notes
Yes. They submit it by Nov 14th for EA
so what if someones doesnt interview before nov 14 their inteview isnt counted for EA?
also, source?
how much weight do you all think mit puts on essays
my awards section is probably lacking a bit because i didnt grind olympiads but i can essay good
MIT Interviewer lol
okay but then what if someone applies EA but doesnt have their interview before nov 14 then...
🤨 mfw google CDS
sounds like that would be a lot of exceptions i feel like a lot of applicants wont have their interviews done by then
Dunno about the inter workings I just know it’s due by NOv 14
But not EVERYONE is gonna get one
It’s not counted against if they don’t get one
the its not counted against you thing seems kinda bs
someone with a good interview will obv be picked over someone without an interview
all other things equal
Tbf you could have a meh interview, which would probably around the same as no interview
Its not like it's that significant of a component of the application tho
Ngl after having my own interview yeah it feels like people stress about them way too much
It really is a conversation honestly
It was a really damn fun conversation too
My Interviewer attended MIT in the 70s and she talked about learning programming when computers still took up entire buildings
Ngl really different from me but there was still somehow an overlap in some aspects like how we both ended up talking about Urban Planning
Personality is the only thing on the CDS that is very important
True
Me not having anything to brag about so my character/personality basically carried the entire conversation for an hour and a half be like
my inteviewer and i didnt have a ton of overlap in what i wanna do and what he did but he still seemed really interested in my stuff fortunately. we also talked about modelling space reentrys using quadratic drag as that was a random project i did and what he did at work sorta
'twas intruiging
better get some free points for being his first in person interview in 3 years fr
w
rip 💀 i think even for most states my application is super solid, im just making sure to perfect my essays so they reflect my character and personality
The interviews are the best advertising for the university fr
My interview made me wanna go to MIT 10x more
cuz one of my friends last year who was valedictorian with 36 act didn't get in, and he had usaco gold and some other awards. but my ecs and cs spike are better than his, and idk how his essays were
my guy was not selling it super hard lmao he only did 1 class at a time for a masters while working a job full time
@modern lava its fine tho i rizzed him up with one of my projects so
despite the total seperation of interests
we chilling fr
waiting for my acceptance
We all delulu after our interviews fr
ONG
the only thing slightly toning down my delulu level is bro said if i didnt get accepted early then id just be waitlisted regular realistically
which is an L
I can’t believe your interviewer was 80
turns out i was slightly off
still mid 70's
but yeah
i got a different one from the one that normally does my town cuz of a conflict of interest
Same
We managed to strike up a great convo about the evolution of technology over that time period because of how much she's experienced tho, which was great
Even somehow managed to drag in one of my own personal experiences
wish i connected w/ my interviewer like that on a shared interest
we talked about a lot of technical stuff too for some reason
bro started talking about laplace transforms and liebenz integrals
i hope i can talk about cool stuff like that
my interviewer has kind of done a bunch of random things so i hope i can channel my inner randomness to have a good convo
gl!
got bored
Hmmmm should I add a timestamp
got it saved as this lol
not official but its usually from the 14-16th it seems and 16th is a saturday which is what theyve been doing so
checks out
16th
Maybe not if it isn't official
My interviewer was pretty confident it was going to be the 16th
Imagine if someone checks the pins and gets jumpscared by the decision release while the timestamp still says a day away lmao
At least I know the QB decision date tho
countdown is also for 16th
It's gonna be the first friday after thanksgiving break for me, which is gonna be chaotic
Also the day after the UC Application deadline
Istg if I pay UC application fees on Nov 30 (they only waive fees for up to four campuses) and then find out that I actually get matched to one of the colleges I ranked then it's gonna be hilarious
Unrelated slightly but I hope yall remember to have your CSS profiles in by nov 30
wdYM
Does that include IDOC? @austere vapor
ja
hngeogqgqe45huet
The faster you do it the less time you'll insane later in November/December
ok ok ok you right u right
ull need your parents for a lot of it
Once it's done you're done - if you add new schools then your docs get sent automatically
Get it done fast af
Doing financial stuff a day before the deadline 💀
It would be nice if I had some
Complicated family background moment
did you guys know that mit students can obtain pirate licenses
true
@inland flicker I GOT MY INTERVIEW REQUEST
omg i thought it was joever
my interviewer wants to meet in the next few days but ill be AT mit this weekend 💀
im kinda worried bc i feel like our interests dont match up.. he did his undergrad (mit) and phd (caltech) in chemistry
Masstech undergrad and CIT grad school goes crazy
im so unqualified LMAOOO
I TOLD YOU IT WASNT JOEVER LETS GO. YOUVE GOT THIS
See my pin for helpful information
MIT and Caltech combo goes crazy fr
THANK YOUUU
i gotta reply but idk when to do the interview 😭
im packing tmr to be out of town friday-sunday morning & since im waking up at 5 am on sunday, idk if ill be coherent enough to talk about myself + no time to prepare
B4 next Tuesday
Next Tuesday is when EA interview reports r due
doesnt everyone get interviews
like even if u have a 2.9gpa/1290 wouldnt u still get one
No haha
They try to give everyone an interview, so everyone has the POTENTIAL to get on
But, it largely depends on area and availability of alumni volunteers in that area.
so what if u dont even get an offer u aint getting in
If you don't get an offer, it isn't held against you!
If you do not get offered an interview because there isn't enough time, or there isn't an interviewer available in your location then you don't get penalized at all.
Now, if you DECLINE/REJECT an interview, your chances fall to near 0.
@austere vapor I got all kinds of those direct admissions too. Are you going to do anything with them?
no lol
how important is the interview
im nervous esp w this guys background (even tho im doing it Monday)
Not OVERLY important
But, Personality is the only thing on the CDS that is marked as "Very Important" for admissions.
Just be yourself
thank you
its important to not throw it
this is a problem for future me 😭 hoping i can find some point of connection w my interviewer
It's important to not do TERRIBLE yeah
Just don’t try to kiss your interviewer 😵💫
Lol?
I mean, this stuff can happen and https://www.reddit.com/r/ApplyingToCollege/comments/m3tbpd/mit_interviewer_accused_me_of_working_for_a/
lmao
LOL
Lol they’re bsing when they put that
Of course personality matters but not to the degree that they say
yall i need my college decisions now fr 😭
MIT actually cares far more about personality. They’d rather have a less academically competitive candidate who is fit for MIT than one who is more academically competitive but not as fit for MIT. Caltech, on the other hand, would simply go for pure academics.
If you watch the MIT admissions workshops, they explain WHY they transitioned to that over the last decade(s)
mfw i was checking my email for any interviews from mit and find an email my mom sent to an mit professor behind my back
mit's vibes are amazing imo
Before when MIT was, like other institutions, only academics their suicide rate was ABSURD and the depression levels were really high as well:
So they started asking and looking for FIT rather than only academics
A few different sources can be cited for that; but primarily deans and other AOs have corroborated it
Wut
I agree!
This doesn’t negate what I said, and also don’t take everything they say as gospel
It’s literally propaganda lmfao
It is textbook propaganda
Almost all the alumni I have spoke to say the same thing and say they're looking for that in applicants when they interview
