I think other classes can definitely be useful. stat 110 (probability) comes to mind immediately for everyone. and I think AM 120 (applied linear algebra), AM 104 (complex and Fourier analysis), AM 105 (odes and PDEs), AM 201 (physical math, basically whatever Michael Brenner is interested in lol), AM 205 (numerical methods), AM 207 (stochastic methods) can be useful depending what you're interested in

well nearly all subfields will require more. it's just a matter of if you need it to the point of wanting to learn it formally from a class or if you can get away with learning it on your own.

And I'd also make a distinction between a subfield's theory requiring math to understand versus requiring math to carry out research, the math these involve are usually pretty different (unless you do pure theoretical physics, in which case they're the same)

ik im a prefrosh so i shouldnt worry about it too much ofc

but like somewhat mapping out what i want to take it'd be tough to even fit in a few extra maths, so if i have that space i need to determine if its worth it to do so

because im planning on taking a language class every semester, and i also want to do some extra physics + comp sci, then astro has its own classes

so when i mapped it out + required geneds etc i didnt have that much space

so thats why im like trying to determine if i want to really focus on math outside of classes instead

but also im not completely sold on comp sci, i talked to a mentor and he said it might be worth it to get a secondary in applied math instead of comp sci, and just learn how to code on my own and through experience.

the classic example is high energy theory. to get even a basic understanding (like at the graduate level but not research level), there are tools from complex analysis, lie algebra, differential geometry.

but you don't necessarily need a class on these subjects and it's not even always true that taking a class is the best way to learn about those things in a way that's useful to physicists

Howard georgi (and many other people) likes to say that math classes are fun brain teasers but not helpful for learning physics. because in a pure math class, you spend a lot of time doing proofs and not much time doing actual calculations. but in physics, you use the theorems but spend most of your time calculating

yeah in general, you're gonna learn a lot in college, but don't limit yourself to thinking that learning has to be in classes. if you're doing research, you're gonna learn a lot by doing and osmosis. many, many things you're gonna learn outside of class
