Omg my interview was 2 hours π
@jolly lichen do u think harvard will give me a warning letter
for 2 Bs
ik theyre kinda loosey goosey with those
no
i had a 4.0 and now its a 3.93
idk if theyre gonna be mad abt that
i looked on reddit last year and someone with 4 Bs didnt get rescinded, just warned
so i think im good
that has calmed me π
doubt
imma get a B in every math and physics class ong
I'll send me loci tomorrow
but arent ur Bs this semester?
like not full year
they were last sem
you're gonna be fine
senior gpa is finalized in decemver
oh interesting we dont do that in my school
i kinda wish they disnt π
i dropped a place in rank, not that it matters anymore
π
i mean even if i pass i want to have learned smth
ive always seen no point in taking an easy A
i wanna learn
thats why i dropped stats for physics
i mean easy A as in barely doing any work
idk bro my sister says pton is easy
i was considering ls 50 but god damn those problem sets would make me pass away
i think i'd hate harvard after that
But the class seems interesting
ppl in harvard just drop the class when its hard lol
yeah ok makes sense
like how half of ls 50 and math 55 drop after the first few days π
so they dont fail
who said that
was it the dude who posted on here two articles on completely different topics and used it as evidence
its the same class, they just destigmatized it
its not easier π
its just that before it was literally all math olympiad kids taking it
and they didnt like that
so they made a statement that as long as ur prepared to do a LOT of work and have a good bakcground in math, ur fine
personally ive never had calculus so i'd probably fail
thats how classes work dawg
did u even see her background
in the article it says she took calculus as a freshman, obviously she finds that shit easy π
it definitely is? π
yeah, those r the kids taking math 55
so its gonna be a lot easier for them
rebuttal: its harvard
problem sets being 30 hours a week is insane regardless of ur opinion π
i would never even consider doing math 55
i'm alrdy struggling to learn precal and calc 1 in 6 monthsπ
π
im not even in harvard yet
anyone interested in reading my loci before I sended it over can dm π€§ I do need some last-minute feedback/guidance!
ofc not the people deferred from harvard though
for my in person interview, my interviewer says he could meet me at his office a few min of driving distance away from my house. is it appropriate to ask for meeting at a coffee shop instead? i feel like the office interview may feel extra nervous, but dunno if asking him to go to a coffee shop just for the interview will kinda annoy him lol
Yuh that grade inflation will save you
πnick i feel like there def are tough As at Harvard
This is just to make people want to take the class; you'll notice she doesn't say how long the problem sets take lmao
But fundamentally, whether a class is difficult or easy has no bearing on its quality, particularly in mathematics
The question is about what insight it gives into the field it is about
One could very well create a class that goes over all of the material in a field, and everyone gets a 100 or everyone gets a 0, and no one is better off because of it
Note that I am not saying there is some "middle difficulty" which is optimal, but rather that difficulty is totally irrelevant
how important are harvard interviews?
what if im their dream applicant(harvard allumns words not mine) but had bad interview cause I have 0 social skills and couldnt completly answer questions
but like they got all of the info they could know about my personality through rec letters
like for example he asked me what i like to cook and I couldnt bring up a single thing and jsut started rambling sounds for 10 seconds
just lost it
i think you might be overblowing your nerves(?) if your interviewer called you their dream applicant, I'd say the interview was good imo! don't sell yourself short! π«° π«Ά
My interviewer didn't call me that
It was a alumni I met
My interview was ππ©
oh π then i'd say there's no way to compare the two b/c one was an official interview and the other was an encounter π’ idk how much weight the interview has
naw its not good π spent the summer there and the food was a low point even though it was free for me π
that looks uhhh...interesting
wdym interesting
ive never seen food that looks that good π
idk maybe its just a culture difference
how is it w low point tho π
ik breakfast is pretty normal but lunch and dinner look crazy
the same thing over and over again was a little tiring, but the salad bar is always a plus βΌοΈ
at least in the summer they had an rotation of meals
hey guys
do you think an application update has to look a certain way
or can i just type it up nicely on a doc and then submit it
and the soup is good
im gonna eat at annenberg as much as possible when i visit in april
to figure out what kinda stuff they have
i have to find a freshman to get me in tho
@rancid mural wait here's a link to the weekly food options if you want to look at those : https://www.foodpro.huds.harvard.edu/foodpro/menu_items.asp?type=30&meal=1
also definitely check out different places around harvard square too! Amorino was my favorite ice cream place, and there is also a taiyaki place nearby too
i guess anything is good when u normally eat pizza products every day
yeah i'll be working and making like $20 per hour so i will def try places around there
hey guys uh, advice?
do ur parents cook for u or smth
or do u cook
Cus in my house no one cooks we just eat frozen food, and sometimes we go to restaurants
oh
that looks gros ngl
yeah my parents cook
is this what abnon meant by culture shock
ye
but southern cooking is usually better than that π
usually eat hot pockets, pizza rolls, and mini pizzas every day
no

that food looks amazing
yall, answer this question bc i would like to know too also it is rude to not acknowledge someone
appreciate that
yeah we just dont cook
my moms too busy and cooking is time i could use studying or sleeping
and also thats prolly expensive
so she only cooks on holidays
ngl its cheaper to cook then just buy freezer food
@rancid mural as a college student, im expecting an answer or some acknowledgment??? this is a server dedicated to helping w college apps!!
dawg
calm down
to be fair it would have been nice to be acknowledged π
thank you
so i have no idea
me neither
but thanks for replying this time LMAO
usually u just type smth and upload it
i really dont think its a big deal how you format an update π huh
ok this was my question lMAOO
i honestly just didnt know
and if there was id think there'd be an answer on google π
and tried to google it but i didnt see it...
yeah as long as ur not like "YOO WHATUP GUYS WELCOME BACK TO ANOTHER HARVARD COLLEGE APPLICATION UPDATE"
i mean u wouldnt have to tell me to calm down if u replied the first time π
ok well, honestly could have just been said without you trying to give a smart aliac remark, but thanks anyway!
"huh" was extremely necessary, but nonetheless, thanks for the input!
to be fair this is a server for college advice π
my deepest apologies π§π»ββοΈ
well it was specifically for harvard tbh
and not harvard specific
but an update is an update
so format woyld be the same for every college
bc other schools have it to where you can just type it up not submit a doc
not really bc of what i just said
but that would have appreciated that being said when i first asked it π
i dont like giving advice that hasnt been confirmed by my consultant
ok
or one on a2c
at the end of the day, acknowledgement or a response would have been nice, if you didn't know you could've directed me somewhere else the first time, but directing me now is no longer needed
abnon prolly wouldve responded if u waited long enough
well my chats were just being covered tbf and ignored
in my experience people can be extremely selective to whorever they're replying to, so if i have to speak up a little extra for a question, then ig thats what ill have to do
so, howβs harvard student life?
check reddit
there are no active current students here so ur not gonna get a reply anytime soon unless abnon (alrdy graduated) does
Maybe riceball can give insights if she ever pops up in here
But I dont wanna bother her
who is riceball π
idk if i've met them
she's a retired mod
graduating next year, she's really sweet
idk if she knows this place exists, but it's fun to hear her stories in the lab
ummm
yea it doesn't look that appetizing
i mean cambridge is close to boston, so there's a lotta food nearby
right if i can go to harvard but have to thug it out on the food then HEY
oh yea
we gon make it work
as long as there is rice i will live
unless ur at umass amherst
maybe
im so excited for college food
my interview was so bad...
im sure it wasnt
iβm sure it wasnβt bad bestie
what makes u say that?
do you have specific questions about student life?
nah like just the pos and negs
it was on zoom and i was just so tired and felt like a robot speaking
i just didn't click with my interviewer and it was really short
but objectively it was probably fine just worse in comparison to my other 2 π
where were ur other two w?
mit and dartmouth
I mean on the whole I think it's good? I made lot of friends, had a great time overall. not super sure what you're looking for lol
ig downside is that harvard has like no sports culture except for harvard-yale and maaaaybe beanpot
ooo whatβs beanpot?
it's an annual hockey tournament between harvard, neu, bu, bc
lol ok princeton freshie
such a creative line
they teach you that one at orientation?
@somber cape what is the best university in the world
that's why you have so much time you're on discord hating?

probably harvard fr
lol alright freshie
manjul time
π₯±
freshie is derogatory
@queen shore whats up with you, how's life
life is chill π
mit >>>

(me whos getting into none of these)
bro doesnt even go there
ut dallas >>
lol better than living in that rut of a town
also I've seen the dorms at princeton don't lie to yourselves
who tf joins an 'eating club'
I'll have you known that Mahmoun's Falafel is the best restaurant in the world
ngl nick I thought boston was pretty cool when I visited
||aren't you a celtics fan bro? ||
how well do credits transfer from harvard to umass btw, im trying to transfer to a four year after i finish π€
π€£
you go to school next to west windsor kids all opinions invalidated
where is princeton medical school
princeton to rutgers as well π
proof?
trivial
what really makes princeton #1 tho fr
must be from all the kids feeding in from the west windsor gated community
I feel like money would be stanford
when you build a lake for your rowing team π
the town next to princeton where everyone who goes to princeton comes from
lol
peepee ton
lmao ok bro have fun in fucking princeton nj
my cousin lives in middle sex π
lol it's not even princeton
whatcha studying?
princeton is literally the endpoint of an nj transit line
each uni hass their thing.
MIT: you wanna be the smartest person on earth?
Harvard: you wanna be the most powerful person on earth?
Stanford: you wanna be the richest person on earth?
whats princetons
maybe math
yeah the only thing to do from princeton is to go to nyc π₯±
it's the actual middle of nowhere accessible by only car and a shitty train line
North End food>>>>
ayyy neat, any particular subfields you're interested in rn? or too early to tell?
who said mit is the smartest person on earth? also what does that even mean?
i hear pizza there hits
wow i cant stop cringing at that
UMass Cambridge<<<<<<<<<<<<<<BU
yeah well im not gonna get in
impactful from the bubble of suburban gated new jersey
true
i think too early to tell, I think I will be intrigued by algebra, but also enjoy applied topics a lot too and could def see myself going down the applied route for further studies
(working as a consultant or on a wall street firm)
LOL
generalization fr
ah nice, does princeton split applied and pure math? or is it one dept
oh yes the princeton strategy of "i'm think i'm better than you but because I avoid poor people instead of unsubtly flagging my school to them it makes me less egotistical"
bro you gotta chill lol, pull the princeton stick out of your ass
fr
the actual math department is basically pure math for all practical purposes. there are a handful of applied classes in the department, with also some other applied math classes in departments like COS (computer science), ORF (operations research and financial engineering), and SML (statistics and machine learning)
ah I see I see gotcha
are you also math ?
I probably wanna pursue combinatorics-> combinatorial geometry . combinatorics in general is mind bending
I was until senior spring lol
did you graduate ? or are you a senior rn
then I dropped it
yeah I graduated last spring
ah, i assume you were dual majoring?
I was physics + math, then just physics
dropped it senior spring? any reason why you didnt finish it?
I feel liked youd be deep in at that point no?
I didn't want to take algebra lol
bruh lol
π
what are you up to now if you don't mind me asking
yeah I was 2 classes away but it doens't really matter for anything
do you really enjoy analysis more?
really?
yeah analysis and geometry >>>
sorry gang epsilon-delta makes me want to die
geometry is valid tho
"erm open sets erm continuity"
unlike you I don't think about grades 24/7
no topology for you
i just think algebra is boring
me who only cares about topology bc of type theory
you stop thinking about epsilon delta after the intro course lol
analysis is very foundational to topology
thats true lol
I love maths that can be easily visuallized. Any math research ive worked on had a geometrical basis.
only historically
yeah im just lazy
dude this conversation has run its course
nick we will be better next sem don't worry π
LETS GOO
the dark side of princeton is about to emerge
I mean analysis is still used as a motivation for a lot of topology because it's a concrete analogy but yea I think modern topology doesn't need analysis at all
why the prof go from harvard to printon
fair
prob research purposes
atp harvard and princeton need to just do pass fail like brown lol
dont think this is true
like w/ poincare conjecture
didnt they use a bunch of geometric analysis for it
The best system
complex analysis is so beautiful and functional analysis is fun
ok thats fair lol
yh
alas, all roads lead to finance
intro real analysis is probably the biggest stumbling block
hmm wait idk if i'm just stupid bc im going through rudin rn
is topology not like super foundational to analysis
dont read topology first
NOOOO
NOOOOOOO
but i dont thinj algebra has similarly bad stumbling blocks lol imo it progressively gets better
or even just really basic topology
no shot lol at least at intro level there's no intuition for wtf an open cover is if you don't have analysis
i mean rudin introduces a lot of topology
thats what was originally special abt his book
most analaysis curricula develop towards some sort of topological intuition right?
is that he used lots of topological arguments
i'm just euphemizing its the columbia build-real-numbers thing
and even before analysis ig
huh wym
a columbia first-year textbook lmao
we just started constructing the reals
oh
yes, many books introduce some sort of point set topology
ur taking classes at columbia? cool
just one lol
yeah this in particular is a very diff geo-y, sure. at high levels everything touches everything. but I'm talking intro level
do u live in nyc or smt
i think i keep learning the same shit over and over but it's not particularly terrible bc i think i'm still getting better
i rly like diff geo and geo algebra lol
yes
well u said modern topology so thats y
ah nice im trying to register for a analysis class @ utd over da summer
can you ELI5 what geometric topology is
is itβ¦using geometry for topology
lmao
actually I applied to grad schools for (astro)physics and considered going to princeton but ngl... I think I would have hated myself
geometric/topological i think he meant
oh
isnt geometry just topology with a metric or something
if you went to princeton or if you went to grad school generally?
I think if you introduce it like artin or something it's well motivated
princeton specifically
i dont think its βwith a metricβ but its βwith more structureβ
oh yeah
sorry modern as in modern formulation (of intro topology)
what makes u say this
kinda confusing, that's on me
i wonder how the idea of fractal dimension is applied to linear algebra/geometry/topology
mm
too isolated as a place to live, department was like.... weirdly cult-ish? idk weird juju vibes. students didn't seem all that happy relative to other places
didnt you say there were big rivalries and lots of toxicity in the department
abnon
oh no idt there are rivalries
the berkeley students for example seemed way happier ngl
NAH
grad or undergrad
princeton kinda felt like they just threw money at things to solve problems
grad
for grad
oh ok
nick if i get in do i go to ucla or berk for ugrad math
berk >>>>
this is exactly what im worried abt lol
but be like a happy individual;
i dont want the weed smell everywhere
you're gonna be fine
lol go to berkeley you donut
also ucla's got a really nice departmental honors program that will definitely let you take grad classes with senior faculty
i mean in terms of quality of life
if you care about academia you have to chase clout to some extent
if you're like super into the terry tao
is berk rlly that juch better thoβ
who cares you get over it in a month max
for ugrad
i see
the prestige kinda matters for academics
wait (0,2)-tensors are just bilinear forms right?
nah his areas of math are the opposite of what i feel like im interested in
yes
i mean broadly if you'd consider the faculty quality a factor
well ok in physicist brain they are, idk if formally they actually are
symmetric = commutative property?
non-degenerate = has to be > 0
so js "not exotic" metrics?
looks like u didnt like the harvard food π
berk is that much more prestigious?
yeah but i feel like its still a tossup virtually anywhere
no I actually thought it was quite good on the whole
my math teacher was a berkeley phd and postdoc
he works as a high school math teacher and tutor
it's not as good as yale but
oh whale
if u got in for L&S CS at berkeley and rgeular CS at UCLA id go UCLA honestly
it's a nontrivial gap
im not a cs major
ofc
it's not the end of the world either ofc, ucla is quite good of course
but I think there is a gap
imho and ime
i c
bro what kinda school is thisπ
columbia dual enrollment
no
yeah the mathematicians inherited our notation
then he'd be a columbia professor
nvm what kinda school do you go to?? π
i call my prof my teacher sometimes
nyc
brooklyn tech or sm shit like that lol
it's so good π
or stuy
all the decent math schools in the city have teachers like this
how
how is yale math very renowned
oh fuck no dude it does not
you're gonna be writing fucking 17 summations on every equation
for no reason
they either decide they want to settle early in nyc and teach or fail at academia and then do it
yeah how is writing another sum good
ok but the real reason it's good is because it's incredibly clear what quantities are vectors and what are covectors
crazily though one of my teachers was tenured at williams i have no idea why she left
no no you really cannot
math majors trying their very hardest to not overcomplicate notation
sorry, i meant princeton math majors
but again, the reason it's good is because it's clear what quantities are manifestly lorentz invariant
because they're contracted
yes. yes it is ugly.
ain't no way you wanna write a sum in front of each term
yeah that makes sense
i feel like if certain quantities are implied summed than there's not really a point?
do most math and physics majors just end up inevitably at finance
Physics major can end up in finance?
ah i see
tech and finance hire anyone with computational talent
bc people suck at computation
yeah a lot of physics PHD end up at finance
at top schools ime math people end up in finance much more often than physics people
yeah makes sense for quant and stuff
the problem solving ability u learn is p helpful
and making complex models
physics is also VERY good at predicting the economy if you understand economics well enough and are not just an asshole physicist
or at least i've heard
physics-adjacent techniques
yeah can understand complicated stuff pretty good enough and solid intuition
actually idt this is really that true anymore because finance is pretty accessible from undergrad. so if you care about money, usually you dip after undergrad rather than doing the phd, which means the people that do phds are selectively less interested in money
ofc some people do go to finance post physics phd but it's not really that common now
lol since when
can be helpful for financial risk analaysts
economics was built out of physics
lol what
oh i see, ive seen PhDs pivot into finance and are portfolio managers at hedge funds
except coding lol
yeah phds ultimately is j a research degree
not a lot more tangible benefit pay wise
wait math ppl arent good at coding?
there's no direct reason for them to be good at coding
whereas a lot of physics people learn coding for research
i thought the stronger your logic and math skills = the better programmer
a lot of ppl say u need to be good at math to learn coding /j
financial risk analysis is just like... estimating a bunch of covariance matrices
some people develop computational software
that's a tiny subset of math people lol
i've never met a math kid who couldn't code huh
ironically that is literally what i was thinking of (i have no idea what that is btw, i just saw it here https://web.stanford.edu/~cm5/software.html)
i don't get it is coding not literally just math with different notation?
nick and floer homology
where are the skills not transferrable?
you don't but you do for cs theory
which is why i'm confused
the shit that is actually innovating cs is pretty thoroughly math-based or based in some other field of science that you're modelling
which is by definition applied math anyway so like are they not the same thing?
how many walls do you put up between "real math" and everything that is currently considered math by society
do you equate real math with pure math
i just ask in that what actually makes cs theory not math
yes
i think it is?
so i think cs = math + knowing how to use a coding language
not necessarily
knowing how a computer works as well is part of it
fair
which you do not necessarily know how to do just because you can do OOP in python
then cs = math + knowing how to use a coding language + knowing minimal computer engineering
- whatever other science field you take inspiration from like neuroscience or something
have u all been to nyc
i live there β why?
whats the best borough to go to? i'm going there with my friend from JHU for my 18th birthday
im a manhattan kid but basically all of them are nice
is there anything fun to do
for first-time recs i guess
north bronx + columbia area + gentrified bridge-adjacent brooklyn + flushing
and literally all of mid-downtown manhattan
i live in manhattan?
like i'm not gonna lie
honestly go anywhere but staten island
wheres theres a finite amount of things to do
even the ferry to staten island is far cooler than staten island
whats staten island
LMAO
is that where liberty is
ik u take a ferry to the statue of liberty so im guessing thats what staten is
THERES 5 BOROUGHS???
we all go once in elementary school and then forget it exists for the rest of our lives
i thought there were 4
no one remembers staten
it's a huge joke
i'm gonna be honest i have no idea what people do in nyc during the day
bike
π
biking is amazing
once i unknowingly biked to harlem and almost got jumped
that was a joke
thats like 1/2 the year π
lol true
but why are you biking to harlem at night
it's a great place to be at any other time and you could always just get on the subway to not be there anymore in the evening
also
who's in nyc during the winter and not the holidays
if you are a new yorker and you get jumped in harlem during the winter at night i feel like that is partially your fault for being stupid

i honestly can't think of a reason why someone would find themselves there unintentionally at that time
i'm ngl the one time I've been mugged was in the early morning as i was getting ready to go to NEW JERSEY
like if I didn't have to go to that absolute hellhole i'd have been fine
def see central park, at least one museum, and chinatown has good cheap food, and the botanical garden is rly nice but thats in the bronx which is up from manhattan
don't forget Times Square and Bronx Zoo
do not go to times square
oh and also American Museum of Natural History
why not π€§ it looks so good at night
there is literally nothing to do
all the mascots are scammers
it's an actual shithole because there are so many tourists
times square is nice just to say you have gone
like walking through it just for the experience
the vibe is easily replicated or better in k town or most downtown/midtown parts that are not times square
bronx zoo is nice but in the winter a lot of the animals are kept inside cause of the cold
nah i still think times sqr is unique, but ktown is fun too for food and vibes
i think it's all about the experience lol
times square was great during the first half of 2020
when no one was there
east and west village is also nice for walking
during the day all of riverside is great
beware the great lawn but central is good too
avoid washington square park unless you have a very specific reason
chelsea area is nice too, the highline, chelsea market, little island etc.
i love like all of brooklyn
the seaports/ferry stops are nice and scenic and usually cost subway fare
take the roosevelt island tram too if you feel like it
if you're there for a while just get a subway pass and fuck around and see where you end up
great city for that
i literally do not remember the last time ive been there
sorry
it's alright lol
yeah me neither sorry π
no worries π€§
bold claim
Manhattan is the canonical borough for visiting
quick question
i need to update my regional ao about something
how to I start my email π€§
Alec Morrissey [email protected] | he/theyAssistant Dean of Admission & Coordinator of Communicationsβ¦
this is the person
do i go--Dear Mr. Morrissey?
idk even know if they use 'Mr.' or is that just implied??
I usually just go βHi,β and then maybe drop a βOn a separate note, how would you prefer to be addressed in the future?β At the end of my email
Idk if thatβs a good solution but uh, yeah π
I feel like adults always use minors first names though idk
they use he/they is what ik from this
yeah i could go that way ig
u sure?
i want to go with like the safest option
Iβve never seen someone do that? Not saying itβs wrong but it seems safer to just ask
so im going ahead with Mr. Morrissey, works? π€§
i hope that's not unprofessional or something?
perfect!
ill go ahead and submit then
thanks β€οΈ
Oxford was out on th e9th, right??
yup
yes
9 jan
economics and management
tysm π
also btw
I don't have to add anything like-
hope you're doing well or something
i can straight up go with the update?
yup
for bates? I couldn't find anything
I could only find an option for resume and like other financial doc
so I go ahead with the regional person right
perfect π
Ahhh I just found out I was selected as a GE Reagan scholarship semifinalist π gonna update my colleges
I feel bad I already updated my colleges about some other awards but idk if I should update them again for this
I already updated some colleges too, but I think I'll still go ahead and do it! I'm going to check with my counselor beforehand, but I feel like the update will let them know I'm still up to things in the 2nd semester π
lol i didn't know colleges congratulate you when u share a new award
they're all so cute
just do it its a great honor
personally im waiting until febuary to write the loci lol
How do Harvard interviews work?
If kids at my school already got hte interview but I haven't should I ocnsider myself out of the running
I don't think so
Though, to be frank, I'm the only one at my school who has even googled Harvard so I wouldn't know from experience. Though, I know it varies based upon availability so maybe you're just next in the queue
no lol
just wait a bit
theres a lot of applicants worldwide and not as many interviewers
any tips for my interview tmmr? it's the only one of mine actually in person
i love espresso
i dont think they serve coffee at the bakery
what do i order
a milkshake
a pastry
i saw tips online just saying smth light like water that's not disruptive for an in person interview
and also so your throat doesn't die
bro i never had any problems with the last few of my interviews but for some reason i was so thirsty during my yale inteview today
oh yeah throat dying sucks
but yeah idk i'd suggest water. idk if you'll have time to eat a pastry so it'll just be sitting there
how long were ygs in person interview
Iβll be purchasing a sugar plum danish fs
ive never had an in person interview this will be my first
that sounds so good i'll be so fr
not many alumni from any school in my area
i have like 2/3 interviews stacked this weekend...will let you know two are in person
same omg
the thrid too if he ever responds to me T_T
good luck! tell us how it goes
i have a interview every day of the week this week
idk how i'm gonna survive them all LMAO
hey at least you have a lot of practice
besides Wednesday in which I have a scholastic(quiz)bowl match which I have been fighting for my life to keep open
LMAO
every time one of my interviewers say "What about Wednesday?" I say "Thursday/Friday/Monday/Tuesday would work better for me. Would that be alright?"
yes
haha
bro
i had my mit interview today
half the time was him grilling my isef research project
and me defending it
mit interviews are so fun they're so relaxed
thats crazy lmfaoo i heard someone had an awful penn interview where the interviewer lowk bullied the poor guy the entire time
where r yall getting these interviewers π
well i meant grill as in asking me deep questions abt my research
which ig mkaes sense cuz it's mit...
yeah fr
like not just letting me bs it
my mit interview was like 2 hours and 50 minutes
my Harvard interview is at an orthopedic place π literally not going to be relaxed at all
but the interviewer i heard about (thankfully i didn't have him) literally said: don't try to impress me bcs nothing you say ever will
dawg what were u doing with ur interviewer
yo what
watching a movie tgt or smth
having a convesration
didn't your interviewer have someone else afterward??
my max interview length was 2 hours π
yo how
heβs a doctor igβ¦ which is awk bc im anti stem
yikes and he requested to have it in his office π?
that's gonna be you
yes π
that's crazy
my interviewer was like my age except +4 so we just played clash royale and i clapped his ass
nah ur joking rn
bro graduated and immeidately joined the alum interview committee
wow what
he's a senior at dartmouth lol
ohhh
im not
hes legit right out o fmit
and is on a startup
thats his full time job
Oh wait also do u know what the statistics are this year for GE Reagan? I've been trying to look for it, but the email didn't mention anything
Iβd assume itβs still 120 out of 15k+
Dang π me and my twin both got semi so I wanted to know the odds π
wait did you just send a doc with award names or like a pdf of the award certificate to update? bcs i need to update and i'm not sure which way is best
Sent a doc with the names
ty ty
Man w so many ppl getting it I think itβs more common than the numbers suggest
https://www.reddit.com/r/ApplyingToCollege/s/RcGbk3Wzq8
LOL thereβs sm here, im not gonna update for now π
get a muffin
one that asserts dominance
Omg yeah I just pulled up reddit to look for answers and saw it π either its the biggest technical error known to man or there is a REALLY large semifinalist body
get the crumbliest dessert possible and spill crumbs all over the interviewer while making eye contact
pretty sure i know more than 120 people who got GE semifinalist lol
ive seen so many
i didnt apply for that cus i didnt feel like doing the essay π
same lmao
also
i didnt need it
i did do the essential visionaries
cus its a one time scholarship or 5k
small scholarships r useful
big one is pointless for me
i really got unmotivated for everything college related mid december (which is hte worst time to have it)
i dont actually need more scholarship money if i get full pell
im not too sure how it all works
finaid is confusing
it said outside award up to 3.5k can replace work study
idk if that includes pell
something tells me i don't get full pell
people who got harvard interviews, did you also get an email from an alumni committee person in addition to one from the interviewer, and did they say that your interview report was due 2/2?
nah
No
But itβs not abnormal I donβt think
i guess the 2/2 deadline is a bit interesting seems a bit early
just got it, and only gives like 10 days to complete the interview
Different alumni associations do it differently
for example my Harvard one told me it was due by next week if I intend to do one (which I guess is 2/2?)
Fairly certain that they just donβt have time for us to drag them along with our availability
nah thats around the time alabama's is
they just say "late jan-early feb"
why do u say that
y?
My Hahvard interview today first and only in person one
idk not a lot of interviewers in my area
Is it true that only 1 Kuwaiti gets into Harvard every 10 years? I want to get uplift my country!!π
i got an interview and i really wasn't expecting it!
Hope you do
@rancid mural what did you talk about during ur interview
Iβm On my way! To mine now
For the interview is it proper etiquette to send a thank you note after? And how would i do that if i dont have his address. I feel like its improper to just email him a thanks
yeah just send a thank you email
thank them for their time and insight
I really want an interview ehre
Whatβs so odd is I got interviews a few days after I submitted apps
Then after that I just didnβt get any
lol
i did it
πbro my mentor is not funny
Introduced me to a guy
We were talking
20 mins later he tells me he's mba at Harvard
I'm like
Cause I was low-key fooling around those other 20 mins
Troll
Good thing he likes me
Wha
my internship boss did phd at harvard π
π₯
Are u planning on sending him a letter or what π€¨ why do u need his address
Hello
when do admissions committees usually begin? at this point are they likely still doing first reads
probably early febuary
after most interviews are taken care of
but still giving them 2 months to review 15,000+ applicants
im so happy I have an in person interview
oh shoot I thought only 15000 people applied
mustave been thinking caltech
other 55k
immediately after app deadline
I mean I suppose
but it sounds like a hastle to deliberate again
with more info from interview
feel like itd make sense to go in 1 fell swoop
interview isn't that additive
and they're gonna go for at least 2 more rounds after first read
ah
i got in a supplementary rec from my research mentor late lol
i hope theyll at least take it into acc after their first read π
do you think it could be additive depending on the role of the interviewer though
ik obviously AO interview means something
but say someone got an interview with like
a top 10 alumni of all time
would it then hold a lot more weight
they should, they're in the business of considering as much info as they can
yeah williamthereader said thats p good
asking for a friend π
are you interviewing with bill gates or smth lol
can i dm lol
in general given that it's pseudo random I doubt it gets weighted that much???
Naurrrr i wanna know the tea too
the thing is tho my region does it kinda differently lmao
im telling myself its random cuz im not tryna be delulu out here π
Nah I donβt think it has any different weight
Unless the dude like demands you get accepted or he pulls his funding which is unlikely
Besides that would be extremely unfair. Like obviously there are regions that are hotspots for wealthier alumni like NY, Silicon Valley, LA whatever.
why?
but also they can do this
because enough people apply before the deadline
(I'll admit I misread the initial q, thought it was asking when reading started, not committee)
i saw a thread like years ago where someone said admissions office confirmed they read before deadline
at least for REA
never admit mistake as a Harvard graduate
is this why you got deferred at mit?
hey man mine was a harmless joke π¦
so was mine
I guess u right
sorry lol kinda out of pocket
tbf mit does place a big emphasis on accepting failure lol
Nah MIT deferred me bc they wanted to read my application twice
is being "scattered" a bad thing in apps?
like i swear my app is literally everywhere
there's no real spike
not inherently
this is fine, spikes are overrated imho
ok i've just been seeing so much stuff online
its lowkey tripping me up
all these posts "you should quit your HS sport and do X passion project"
Petey (MIT) despises βspikesβ and βnarrativesβ and βthemesβ
"why are you still in NHS/DECA/FBLA"
lmao i had 10 straight stem ecs and my counselor said to switch them out cuz it would be a 'red flag' for some places that i wasnt well rounded
like holy shit they're tearing my app apart π
i feel like my ECs are just mid
like they don't compare to the ultra tryhards on here and similar platforms
the ones that i see getting accepted everywhere
a2c is not representative of the general applicant pool though
like acceptance posts are self selecting
a2c all tryhards
its people w crazy ecs and awards that are inclined to advertise their acceptances
like lowkey bro i get into my ECs on accident
have u read the admissions files
hell my most recent one my little cousin introduced me to a roblox game...it got rlly big and i became community manager
i think thats more representative of understanding what the admissions process actually is
like its just random af
and its sm more than ur raw ecs and stats like they actually want to think about what kind of roommate youd be and how youd contribute
the "i piss on the toilet seat" roommate
have u seen the 'i have a fetish for soft things so dont mind if i stick my head in ur laundry' roommate essay
those people are just louder online. truly all different kinds of applications can be and are accepted
and at this point, there's not much you can do about it anyway
i haven't yet...
no sense worrying
ah gotcha
thanks
i feel like recs and stuff like that play sm more of a role than ppl think
#π»-app-questions message
I think recs are highly underrated, ECs overrated by a2c
& like context especially
the closest i'll get to being a student is touching the foot on the statue
that uh....
that statue nasty as hell huh
pls dont tell me ppl actually piss on it
touching the statue just isn't something students do is all
that's the point haha
point being there's like 0 shot i get accepted
already got deferred
REA
do they download your app again for RD?
cuz lowkey i updated it hella
π
hey have hopeπ fire loci
actually it wasn't bad
except i got promoted today π
and my loci was sent yesterday
my double legacy friend who started a bunch of npos and raised like 20k got deferred π
from the experience with mfs at my school
those NPOs are just begging their rich family members/connections 4 money
they don't do jack shit otherwise
at least the ones at my school
honestly prob yeah
my school is a load of the same bs lmao
we had one girl whose team raised over 200k
but both her parents r cardiologists
lowkey bro maybe
nah
Ik someone whoβs raised a similar amountβ¦ guess what tax bracket their friends and family r in π
π₯² I rly hope this isnt true
i could until i actually do something with the position
i'm basically 1/40 thousand
ya i get that
my role is switching big time though
i used to run the official league / large tournaments for the comp scene
(which i actually did and included in the app)
don't they actually make the decision long before the decisions r released though
cuz they gotta go through so many students
yeah i want to do a mid february update
by that time youβll most definitely have been read already
if youβre borderline a strong update would probably be helpful in committee but not initial reviews obviously
The harvard thread having 60k is crazy actually
Especially since it died after luck left
It was never luck
it did?
never noticed any difference in activity lol
what's the best way to sender over the loci? The portal or email?
hi carly
Email feels more personalized
so like do I send like a pdf or do I just paste the 800+ words
i wrote an email and also uploaded in portal
like wrote an email not attached a pdf
but up to you tbf
harvard explicity said this on he deferral letter:
These optional documents or updates can be submitted via the Materials Uploader tool in the Applicant Portal.
so guess portal works for them
should I email that I've uploaded updates to my portal or would that be unnecessary?
thats what i did
So did uchicago reply back too? like an acknowledgement or something?
yes but it was literally a 2 sentence acknowledgment to my 500 word email LOL
π€§
I'll email too
at least ill know that i still do exist for them
oh now that i think about this; it makes sense
yeah skipping it i guess
thanks
What do they ask on the interview?
my interviewer attended Harvard med school, not the college⦠is that normal?
yes
it happens. some clubs require interviewers to be alumni of Harvard college but not all
