I like programming languages and type theory, and one of the best things I've done this year is think about how to explain what my field is to others and what I like about it with several templates of cliche-sounding spiels.

i do say "i just like this" at some level, but by cooking up reasons why, it helps others have things to grasp onto

AND they might be able to better understand and relate to some of these reasons

this is particularly helpful since i (unfortunately /s) interact with non-cs non-math kids. and they just wont get what i mean by "i study PLs" if they've never coded. (a lot of kids know how to code, but it's like script kiddie or worse data scientist's R/Python)
