we have great faculty members (Boaz, Sitan, Madhu, etc). i'll note that some fields in cs arent well-represented tho. for example, HCI has like one main person: Elena Glassman.

ngl, this is kinda the vibe in the math dept as a whole lol. this gets more true the more advanced the class is. one extreme is the calc series for every major that needs to be decent w numbers. those are hard to get an A in (relatively). on the other are grad-level topics classes, where you get an A (unless you didnt understand the content, and didnt do any of the work - they assign work to us undergrads since we need grades)

the math dept has made efforts to make math more approachable. you can read the latest Crimson articles about Math 55 and Joe Harris for specifics. if you've seen the material for the first time (which is most people), digesting the content can be time-consuming and difficult, but it's doable. just depends on how much time u want to spend on math

grading depends on the dept and the prof

traditionally, the math dept affords a great deal of flexibility to profs and in particular CAs and TFs

that combined with you generally being able to tell if your written up solution is correct before submitting means you're most likely getting an A in a proof-based Harvard math class

but u just gotta know the prof; either way, if you understand the material, you wont need to worry about the grade at the end!

i'll concur with the assessment on Boaz. I TF'd his theoretical cs class (the one at the undergrad level - not grad), and like tbh, it's kinda hard to teach the material well imo

if you actually read the definitions and go thru examples, it's chill. except, it's kinda hard to sit thru examples and perhaps unintuitive definitions

If you're desiring good teachers, we also have Stephen Chong. he teaches a compilers course and other stuff sometimes. idk about his research, but i've heard only very positive stuff about his classes

well, I guess I'd say the proportion of profs who are "good" at teaching is roughly the same. you are for the most part free to choose the classes you want to take though and the profs that teach them

i believe there's also documents on how course numbers should be made, etc., but they may be harder to find
