My MIT interviewer asked questions to steer the interview of course, but we basically just had a 3 hour long conversation about anything and everything
I asked questions, he asked questions about my questions or about my answers, and really we didn't even get to asking the MIT-required questions until about 45 minutes in lol

By only considering the highest performing students you ignoring that most ppl that are nationally poor won't have be performing at that level. If they are, they definitely wouldn't be arguing that their poverty helped them (all things considered). They had to work harder to overcome the income gap, that is what makes them attractive as applicants, and not that their low income presented them with opportunities that helped them.
