Columbia has a decently strong reputation in CS, and when u factor in machine learning it rivals Princeton. When u factor in the theory side of computational statistics, it surpasses Princeton. Within the ivies it’s only significantly behind Harvard and Cornell.

Brown, on the other hand, just doesn’t have as strong of a CS reputation.

As someone who sees the validity of complaints on both sides –– I think both the IDF and Hamas are committing crimes against humanity that will, like most crimes against humanity, go unpunished -- I have a slightly different take.

Seems to me that the clash at Columbia is between student groups, both of whom have ideologies, demands, and litanies of complaint that have less to do with academic discourse per se than with identity, political perspectives, and amplifying real or imagined offenses on-campus.

That's fine. Problem is those things seem to be fucking up the whole "academic discourse" bit.

There's a 3rd group that no one seems to mention: those who have no interest in participating in this conflict and would like to carry on studying so they can get their degree and GTFO. I don't think their silence makes them complicit in anything –– an unpopular opinion in an atmosphere that desperately needs to paint people as "us" or "them" -- but they, too, are affected by the events on campus. What about their rights to the education that, for many, isn't coming cheap?

FWIW, Columbia claims to value "a commitment to thoughtful, rigorous debate that respects our collective rights to learn, work, and live together, free of bigotry, intimidation, and harassment," which, in an era where people seemingly think of microaggressions as tantamount to violence and conflate discourse with shouting matches, seems... tricky, at best.

The clash isn’t between student groups, it’s the funding that the university gives to Israel and its institutions (e.g: Tel Aviv global center) I won’t disagree that clashes between students do happen and that’s because by those people are ignorant which is why you’ll see aggressors from both sides. The majority seem to be in peace, we had prayer services earlier which Jewish students and shortly after Muslim students prayed in peace in joint efforts for the cause ( I participated) ~ divest from academic ties with Israeli Institutions and funding

I agree there a lot of people who just wanna focus on their studies and not be directly associated with any of the protests going on, but with such an activist community where it’s only growing bc the university wants to suspend and silent students in a school stemming from a long history of activism, it tends to backfire. A bunch of classmates suspended and arrested tends to have an impact on how courses pan out which is why most of them are hybrid now and a lot of exams are behind pushed back.

And the heavy amount of police and extra security on campus doesn’t help, they don’t even feel safe going to class

Slightly left-leaning. There are international students who are far more conservative than their western counterparts, as well as students who are libertarian conservative / religious, but who aren't Trumpniks.

Here's my experience.

I went in as an older non-trad student, but all my friends were traditional undergrads. I do not recall a single political conversation, though they were extremely diverse in ethnicity, national origin, and economic background. I didn't even figure their politics out until I graduated: one was a conservative Catholic, another was liberal, another was what you'd now call "woke," and a few were POCs who didn't really have any hardcore political feelings. But NONE of that came up when we were drinking, hanging out, or recovering from hangovers on Low steps.

I don't think Columbia is as wildly political as, say, the East Bay (looking at you Berkeley).

most students cannot get on campus, most dining halls are closed (i can't eat until noon unless i want to walk 1.5 mi), most libraries are closed (they were all closed until a few days ago)

by surrounding you with help and the right resources

I think lots of people could be successful with startups at cal or columbia. Cal is just harder to stay afloat

you would be under the same stress at columbia even if you make a startup at columbia instead of cal you will be competing with people launching similar ventures at cal so it makes no difference

you just have less resources at you're disposal when you're not in the yc-stanford-berkeley startup triangle

I've always thought cal was more rigorous. Might be wrong. IMO the stress of academics is a huge factor for success in ECs
