i’m rural generally lowish income (lower middle class), but yeah there are some elements of wealth here that are kinda intrusive. for one the gentrification around campus is very evident, if you walk a few more blocks than columbia spans you’ll see the real community in harlem we kinda pushed out. it is generally safer though and that’s something i’m thankful for. in terms of people, some people just don’t have any common sense or emotional intelligence because of how they were raised

take that as you will but it isn’t an overt “im so wealthy im going to exclude you” type of thing

i do really like columbia but this was something i massively struggled with for a bit

the first week or so it felt like everyone went to a better school than me and did more than me and was wealthier than me and didn’t understand where i came from. so i just felt generally underwhelming because people knew so many people going to ivies and stuff. and like i had to work my ass off to even remotely get on their level

and i feel like that made me a little angry that nobody understood that. but i found groups of people who did understand that

we’re all here for the resources

you have to be accepting of everyone’s backgrounds

whether they worked their ass off or their daddy paid for a building

yup. my mom made an analogy; most of these kids who have legacy or come from rich families come from parents or grandparents who worked their as off to be able to put the next generation of their family forward, and that’s where i’m starting off

everyone starts at their own place in time and you can’t really compare with other people

my mom immigrated to the US from romania to give me a better life

and i’ll be attending college at an elite university in the US to (if i have kids) give my kids a better life and also the entirety of my family tbh. can retire my parents, my cousins in europe use me for clout
