I know nothing about CS but approaching this from a practical perspective, there’s no better place to learn Wall Street and NYC banking than NYU

#

You would be right in the thick of the action. Unless UT is that much better at CS, I think NYU would be the best fit

nova tusk
#

if your goal is to work in Wall Street then NYU is the clear choice, otherwise Turing is one of the best cs programs in the country

#

is changing majors to stern a necessity?

oblique bay
#

Why would u do cs if u wanna go vc?

#

Or even banking

#

You’ll be doing more back office stuff

#

And isnt turing way better than tandon?

nova tusk
oblique bay
#

But for turing vs tandon i’d check placement results

weary berry
#

I realized that all my EC's in hs was related to stem

#

it was only until really really recently

#

where I made up the mind that I wanna do finance

oblique bay
#

Like would transferring into stern be possible

weary berry
#

I think

#

i just need a really high GPA

#

one issue of turing is that it kinda shoehorns me into a cs/quant job

marble siren
#

turing is one of the best cs programmes in the world. declining that for tandon should be solely for the location or the possibility of switching to stern. you've gotta decide whether declining turing would be worth it

nova tusk
#

I don’t think you should turn down Turing

#

working in Wall Street is not enough reason for NYU tandon

#

And I imagine it’s really fucking hard to switch to stern

left leaf
#

UT Austin Turin anytime!

nova tusk
#

see you at Austin

NYU is famous for only their finance degree and MBA.. it's an average school for computer science

narrow fulcrum
#

nyu non-stern doesn't place into finance at all afaik. the nyc factor obv still helps but just don't go there with the expectation of stern-like placements

left leaf
#

maybe nyu non-stern get hired as IT in finance companies but it's not the same as investment bankers hired from stern nor the software engineers hired by tech companies from top CS schools

weary berry
#

yeah

#

the thing is that I want to work front office

#

for IB

#

however at least I have a chance of transferring to stern if I go to NYU

#

if I do Turing I kinda lock myself into CS

#

idk

#

cuz its not like I dislike doing cs

left leaf
#

i highly doubt it's easy to transfer to NYU stern - it's an impacted major at NYU, just like CS is impacted in most top schools

nova tusk
#

yeah I don’t think it’s gonna be even moderately easy to transfer to stern. And you got into Turing, aren’t you even considering software roles in the future??

oblique bay
#

Id rather go swe from turing than ib from stern

#

You wont make as much money but itll be so much easier

young quail
#

for quant I'd guess they're similar. for IB, I think NYU is probably a bit better

torpid latch
#

Bro nyu sucks ass at cs even SBU is better, UT Austin is one of the best cs programs in the nation. It’s a no brainer. Plus tandon engineering in in Brooklyn which is separate from the main campus

#

Nyu is only valuable for stern

oblique bay
#

Turing is super prestigious

torpid latch
#

Yeah Fr this isn’t even a debate

fresh lantern
#

wouldn't doing cs at nyu help getting into mba at nyu?

left leaf
#

why study cs if the aim is to do mba and work in investment bank?

oblique bay
torpid latch
#

If you wanted to do IB then why didn’t u apply stern

weary berry
#

I came to this realization recently

torpid latch
# weary berry I came to this realization recently

I mean if you choose nyu transferring to stern will be very hard, but you will get cs opportunities in New York. But Turing is very prestigious, and you will definitely get top tech companies after you around the country.

proud kettle
#

If Turing is as prestigious as people say, I’d say go there. It sounds to me like the transfer to another NYU school would be quite the hassle

left leaf
#

yes Turing can be considered almost at par with GT or CMU CS

vague pike
#

UT Turing gets you crazy opportunities + a high salary

#

plus UT is an amazing school.. im biased but UT

oblique bay
#

I would do serious research before this decision

#

In ib you will be a excel monkey for 3 years working 100 hours a week

#

Its a shitty job and if u dont think u can survive a horrible work environment do not do it

limpid iron
#

in all seriousness tho op, i also agree to look more into ib bc esp compared to cs, the pay might be relatively similar but the workload and lifestyle are completely different. honestly i think doing cs as undergrad lowk should still be fine but maybe double major or smth if u can but turing is rly rly good. i’d strongly consider it and if anything you can do an mba later if u still feel like going into ib is the way to go (though highly don’t recommend it unless you’re 10000% sure)

left leaf
#

@limpid iron what're you planning to study at stanford?

# left leaf <@1036647439370813440> what're you planning to study at stanford?

still deciding but either math (with finance / modeling focus) and cs double major or data sci and then hopefully an econ minor and econ co term or ms&e coterm.

there’s so much to choose from so i really don’t know what fully but i want to go into econ modelling / analysis or maybe quant but i also rly still don’t know bc econ modelling and forecasting pays you nothing

#

sorry for a whole life story lmao

left leaf
#

maybe try coursework in each of these and decide based on what you like

#

econ modeling sounds fun and you can also get into economic policy making

limpid iron
#

yeah i kind of want to work in the federal reserve but they highly underpay their researchers compared to working in the private sector so we’ll see how much debt i’ll have by the time i graduate lol

left leaf
#

private sector e.g. big oil companies hire economists all the time

#

Fed job would be cool though, you get to influence the entire economy
