Yeah, I think a lot of WL admits also miss priority housing application deadlines, a few miss priority course registration deadlines, and, from what I've heard, some schools are more strict about rescindment(ex. grade-related) with WL admits.

I technically met the graduation requirements since I started with AP classes in 7th grade, so I applied for fun in 10th and 11th grade because I had nothing to loose by doing so and thought it would help me refine my essays.

Each time, I changed my essays to see what would happen (if I got rejected in 11th grade but was accepted or waitlisted in 10th grade, I would have known that change was bad). I actually applied to multiple other schools as well in 10th and 11th grade just for this reason so I could have a better application this year.

It also meant I had some really good recommendation letters as my teachers made multiple updates to them.

Probably because MIT admitted quite a few people from the waitlist this year. Also, waitlist admit rates fluctuates(yield overshoot and undershoot about a value) year to year, and last year Stanford only admitted 6, so this year my guess is it will be a total of 20-50.

That's a bit misleading: Berkeley is top tier for grad school, but it's not quite at the same level for undergrad(obviously undergrad there is still excellent, but not T5 level except for a few things like EECS). Those rankings are reflective of its graduate programs which, in many subjects, are better than or on par with some of HYPSM.
