Schools: Purdue, Edinburgh, Toronto
Intended Major: Undecided Engineering
Similarities: Cost of attendance doesn't matter, weather is about the same, all three are top ranked schools within their countries. Around the same total enrollment numbers

Purdue**
PROS

  • 3 Year Bachelor, vs 5 for Toronto (includes one year of co-op) and 4 for Edinburgh
  • US Job market much more appealing post-grad
  • Much easier to transfer to top US dream schools from a US school, easier to get into top US dream schools post-grad from a US school
  • Learning communities allow for smaller classes, and taking classes/rooming with the same group of people
    -T10 US according to US News (engineering)
    -T40 World according to QS (engineering)
    -Finish my Bachelor at 19, but 0 work experience

CONS
-In the middle of nowhere, one hour and a half from the nearest semi-decent city
-Safety concerns, a kid was murdered there by his roommate last year
-15 hours of transit from home to university, 2 flights and a longgggg bus ride

Toronto
PROS
-Guaruanteed Co-Op program with minimum salary at 50k for one of the years
-only university to offer me a merit-based scholarship, although only brings total cost equal to other schools
-At least 5 of my friends are going there next year, so established network + know some students already there
-3 years post-grad work to get the nationality
-Finish my bachelor at 21 with one 9-17 months work experience
-Number 1 Engineering school Canada
-T40 World engineering schools (QS)
-Vibrant city, would genuinely enjoy living here - visited before, seemed good enough

CONS

  • Extremely rigourous workload
    -Don't take IB credits, so would have to retake courses I've already taken i
    More...
    n high school like Calc 1, Phys 101, etc
    -10 hours from Home
    -Cold Ass winters, I come from a semi tropical paradise 😢

Edinburgh
PROS

  • 4 hours from home
    -UK is a vibe
    -best city/life in general by far
    -15 the in the world (not Engineering) QS
    -66th in the wolrd engineering QS

According to my school's college counselor, postGrad opportunities at top US schools are much more likely for students who went undergrad at US schools

And I guess I'm still clinging on to the dream of studying at some point at an HYPSM, plus Purdue allows me to finish my bachelor much faster
