UGA
Major: computer science & geology
Pros:
- credits transfer better and would have to take 2 courses to complete gen ed
- georgia resident and have zell miller scholarship (covers cost of all tuition) - brings coa to ~40k for all 4 years
- would have a car and would be able to drive back home whenever
- cost of living is lower
- would have friends and contacts here
- pretty campus
- likely would be easier to double major here
- good professors (for geology)
Cons:
- seemingly not as good research and internship accessibility as umd
- very white school (~70% white); however, cs is more diverse
- too much into greek life & football
UMD
Major: computer science & geology
Pros:
- much more diversity as a whole
- much more clubs and organizations
- stronger cs & geology program - easier access to research, internships, and jobs
- a lot more courses and diversity in classes
- maryland is much more progressive than georgia with more protections for lgbtq+ statewide
Cons:
- accepted into letters & sciences so i would have to transfer into cs, but doesnt seem difficult to do
- costs significantly more even though i have 50k scholarship (150k total); however, can afford it
- my credits dont transfer as well because of their requirements, meaning i have to take more courses and potentially delay my graduation
- do not know anyone here
- cost of living is higher and overpriced residential housing / seems to have a housing crisis?
Other considerations:
- ultimately do not have any interest in cs as im chasing bag, so research & diversity in class choice for cs does not really matter me as im just trying to get a job. however, research & diversity with classes, etc. does matter to me for my geology major
