Schools: UC Berkeley and UC Irvine
Intended major: L & S as undeclared / ICS as undeclared (want to declare computer science)
Similarities: Both are large public school. Both share UC system resources.

** UC Berkeley**
Pros:

  • more prestige
  • have one of the best CS program
  • more complete college experience

Cons:

  • hard to declare CS major
  • surrounding is dangerous
  • very competitive
  • I have to share room with other people

UC Irvine
Pros:

  • I love Irvine this city
  • I can still live at home
  • I can study CS
  • friends
  • FOOD!
  • cheaper

Cons:

  • 30min commute time everyday
  • lower rank
  • CS program is not as good as Berkeley

Tiebreaking considerations:

  • If declare CS as a major is not a problem in L&S college I would go for Berkeley. I hope someone can tell me what exactly should I do to increase my chance.
  • I didn’t expect that I can get in UC Berkeley so I concern about the workload in Berkeley especially go there as STEM majors.

Im pretty sure Berkeley changed it this year so LS CS is a direct admit

u can major in LS data sci at cal, pretty easy to declare

as for cs, idk ab the new policy but my friends have been able to declare cs fine as long as they have solid prior knowledge in the prereq classes, but it’s still like 10-20 hrs a week

as long as u get the prereqs ur good tho i think

and the prereqs are basically don’t get a C average in ur required lower div classes

Cs is absolutely brutal at ucs, especially Berkeley

If you didn’t apply CS for Cal I wouldn’t risk it. Switching into CS from undeclared is now through holistic review, more of a crapshoot.
