URochester:

Pros: Unseenable prestige, somehow ranked 36th but no one knows this college lmao.
Seems to be good in Optics but idk if I’m going in there. 30k/yr tuition campus looks really nice. FIRST merit scholarship( calculated alr in the 30k total)

Cons: Didn’t get the 5 year GEAR bs/Ms program, tuition doesn’t seem to be negociable. In the outskirts of NY, looks like lack of internships. Engineering ranked mid: like #68

Stonybrook:

Pros: WISE Scholars with possible merit scholarship but idk, considerably the cheapest option of the three. Decently well known and at school kinda a feeder to this college so I will know ppl already.

Cons: Older dorms have a bad rep, nothing much with robotics or formula sae club fun, no prestige ( yes I have Asian parents)

RPI:

Pros: Prob the best engineering wise when ranked at #33, and decent prestige at #51. A lot of robotics and engineering resources. Lots of CNC machines, 5 axis, big money in machines. Formula SAE team and i know high school alumnis there. Has relationship with FIRST scholarship 37k/yr offer rn but i can prob negóciate lower hopefully.

Cons: way more guys than girls (I’m scared) old principal and administration was clown( heard they got a new one this yr tho) in troy but place seems nice, kinda a capital area next to Albany. No clues on resources like internships or opportunities

I don’t know how to research more info on these colleges in case you guys can’t tell

fringe quest
#

will you be able to do admitted students weekendS?

#

UR is a super school

#

(i mean all are good options)

kind obsidian
#

Also Rochester is 8 hours from where I live but I’ll try to do admitted weekends but idk it is so far and I gotta commit by may 1st

fringe quest
#

those are really the best thing to get a feel for a place

#

though if SB is TONS cheaper, that may be the obvious option

kind obsidian
#

SB will prob be like 20-27k due to mech degree

#

Overall stem is just more expensive even if I’m broke and asking for aid

fringe quest
#

so less but not an insane amount

kind obsidian
#

Ye

#

The biggest thing that attracted me to UR was GEAR and I took the L

fringe quest
#

gotcha

kind obsidian
#

I wonder if I can do 5 yr bs/Ms

#

My seniors at RPI said they can do bs/Ms in 5 yes

#

So I’m mixed

fringe quest
#

could call and ask?

#

AOs love to talk to admitted stduents trying to makedecisions

kind obsidian
#

Yeah I prob will double, triple, quadruple check

#

But that is good advice

#

RPI had an arena size area full of fabrication machines

#

If only I applied for that scholarship junior yr but I missed it 😦

And they got cool underground tunnels

broken turret
kind obsidian
#

And ground boys

broken turret
#

but like in all honesty is location a big factor for you?

kind obsidian
#

It is a somewhat factor

#

Because I do want to help my family somehow in case anything happens

broken turret
#

a lot of people who grow up here like to remain local but people who were transplants or weren't here their whole life basically scramble to get out

kind obsidian
#

Troy is like 4 hours away and rich is 8 housers away

broken turret
#

Hmmm

kind obsidian
#

I’m the eldest child of my fam and my fam rely on me for basically anything legal papers and documents

broken turret
#

How far are you from RPI?

kind obsidian
#

I tried to pass some responsibilities to my younger siblings but so far all they learned was how to fix the 3d printer

kind obsidian
broken turret
#

😭

kind obsidian
#

8 hours for Rochester

broken turret
#

Thats not as bad as 8 hours to UofR

#

if I were u i'd choose RPI

kind obsidian
#

I’m from NYC

#

I both love NYC’s atmosphere and hate it

#

Like the duality between awesome musicians playing and the crowd syndrome

#

And naked man pole dancing on the subway

broken turret
#

LMAOOO i miss NYC

#

going back there in a few days i need to get out of roc

kind obsidian
#

RPI is like the middle ground between NYC and Rochester

broken turret
#

sounds like a good compromise

#

uofr has good cafeteria pizza tho ngl

kind obsidian
#

Ima just take these advice as both thoughts and votes

kind obsidian
broken turret
#

As a nyc dweller this should be a vital factor

kind obsidian
#

Indeed

broken turret
#

a very unwalkable city

kind obsidian
#

Rochester: 0
RPI: 2

kind obsidian
broken turret
#

just in the whole area is pretty sparse

#

there are sidewalks and crossing walks but many days out of the year its EXTREMELY cold

#

we also don't have a metro system

kind obsidian
#

I prefer cold over hot

#

Cus I can always wear more layers

#

But idk I don’t want frostbite and I heard some of UR’s forms have no heater 💀

pale mortar
#

if u go to uofr u get to meet the one and only meeshat ‼️

kind obsidian
#

Like how do those students live

broken turret
kind obsidian
#

Also RPI has formula race car team while Rochester doesn’t

#

I’m a huge robotics person

#

So that’s a factor I’m considering too

#

Cus formula SAE motor sports looks sooooooo cool and fun after experiencing FRc

broken turret
#

Im on RPI side

kind obsidian
#

Lemme update the tally

#

But the Rochester ppl seem so nice

#

The interviewer I had for Rochester and the staff in general is nice

#

And a 9:1 student to staff ratio looks like a close relationship

#

Aaaaaaaa I’m indecisive and as a first gen low income

#

With Asian parents

#

I’m scared

#

My siblings are supposed to follow down my path
