Schools: Rice v. UVA
Intended major: Econ/Commerce/Business

Rice
School 1 Pros:

  • More prestigious
  • More emphasis on entreprenuership
  • Smaller class sizes
  • More "introverted" and quiet, whereas UVA is slightly frat-focused
  • Like Museum District and Ion District in Houston
  • Far away from home so I'm forced to grow and adapt

School 1 Cons:

  • ~$20k/yr more compared to UVA, not a huge factor though
  • around 6 hrs away from home
  • Not sure about opps in finance/consulting

UVA
School 2 Pros:

  • McIntire School of Commerce is super strong, good recruiting
  • Echols Scholar: cool dorm for first yr, slightly easier time getting classes I want compared to other freshies, no geneds
  • 1.5 hrs away from home (I'm in state)

School 2 Cons:

  • Not as prestigious
  • More frat-focused
  • 1.5 hrs away from home: I might be less forced to grow and stuff
  • Lots of ppl from my HS will go to UVA so that might be odd
  • Huge school so I might feel lost

Tiebreaking considerations:

  • Are investment banking or consulting opportunities better at UVA? Can't find much data on this.
  • How do class sizes differ, esp for freshman yr?

Addendum:

  • Seasonal depression so prefer warmer climates/short winter, so prefer TX in this regard

UVA has better finance recruiting and its cheaper for you. Seems like a no brainer.

Hmm yeah I had been thinking the same

#

My only concern was that UVA entrepreneurship is exceptionally weak, a friend of mine who runs a YC-backed quant finance startup said that he didn't get much support from UVA. On the other hand, Rice's entrepreneurship center seems well funded, lots of successful Rice alumni who went on that path stick around and remain affiliated with Rice Entrepreneurship

#

And from what I can find online, Rice finance recruiting seems on par with UVA at least? Really good recruiting for places like JPMC within Houston, then you can move to NYC for the actual job.

Although you might be right that UVA is the better pick; for some reason I feel kinda emotionally attached to Rice

rice is the better option. we prove this claim now. let R be the set of all reasons why rice is a better fit for litfishie than uva, and let U be the set of all reasons why UVA is a better fit than rice. we want to show that R is larger than U, i.e. |R| > |U|. we can construct f: R -> U, such that for each reason r in R, f(r) is a corresponding reason in U. for example, f("Rice has a warmer climate than UVA") = "UVA has a cooler climate than Rice". however, we can clearly also find a reason r' in R that has no corresponding reason in U, such as r' = "Rice has a mascot named Sammy the Owl, which is cooler than UVA's mascot, the Cavalier". therefore, f is not surjective, and R and U are not equinumerous. since R and U are both finite sets, this implies that |R| > |U|, as desired. hence we have proved that rice is a better fit for litfishie than UVA. also, if litfishie didn't go to rice, he wouldn't be able to have hella skibidi rizz in room Martel 406C. Q.E.D. for anyone wondering, this is /s and an inside joke lol

This proof is incorrect, f being defined from R -> U defines that for all r in R there exists a u in U such that f(r) = u. This has nothing to do with surjectivity. Not being surjective would imply that there exists u in U such that for all r in R f(r) is not u. A better proof would be an injective but not surjective map from U being the domain to R being the codomain. Then that implies |R| > |U|

If both are finite sets
