Yeah but, looking at my current stats and preferences (money) are any of those realistic options?
Yep, all of them. These are not my options at all. This is based of your current 9th 10th and 11th grade marks
A friend of mine who's going to major in CS applied to very similar schools
he's in ISC as well
I see.
Aren't UCs highly competitive sepcially for international cs students
I also wanted to ask if my ECs are any good or do I need to work on them.
Oh yeah, especially cal and ucsd which is why I classified them as targets / dreams. They're also often overhyped so keep that in mind when applying to them
Your EC's honestly look like the strongest part of your application rn which being an international student in the same situation, won't get you into a good dream university
For instance, the best I got was a high target, I got rejected or waitlisted from all my dream universities because my grades were mid at best
I'm fairly confident il get 1500+ on SAT when i give it.
Any college ranked less than 100 for cs or similar course worldwide would make me very happy ๐
That definitely helps. Honestly just concentrate on your 12th grades as your major focus as of rn and keep up your EC's.
If that's your goal it's honestly fine if you maintain 80% cause you'll get that fairly easily due to your strong EC's and the 1500+ SAT score as long as you don't apply with financial aid
that makes it slightly worse
You're gonna want to look at public unis more than private ones like Purdue and UIUC more than private cause of fees
Even UMich might be out of the option because even though they're public their fees is very expensive and they don't offer aid
Even though USC is deathly expensive and a private uni I'd personally try because if you've got great grades they give great aid, upto 75% and a girl I'm friends with from my brother's school (JBCN) even got a full ride
Similar case here ๐โโ๏ธ
I'm sure that il score 85-95% in my 12th aswell
But when i apply it would just be a predicted score for the finals since my finals are in Feb next year
Yes that's true but if you get deferred into the RD round by universities which is highly possible, you're going to have to submit those grades to them as well
For consideration of your application, not after you're admitted
I see
If you aren't confident about your upcoming finals in Feb, you could try for a not-so-high university in your ED1 round
Like Northeastern for instance
Or your ED1 could be a throwaway application just in case you get in like Carnegie Mellon and your ED2 could be Northeastern maybe
Dude it's ranked #34 worldwide it's like a target school for me lol
Yes but you said you wanted aid as well, that basically pushes all targets into dreams haha
Not sure about CMU, they rejected my friends who are really smart and had national/international Olympiads in competitive programming
Medalists
Same here, I only know two people who've got in for comp science across mumbai and one of them got harvard too
so like
Aren't there merit based scholarships:/
I'm thinking il apply without aid to a few schools and just loan it out if i get in.
If you're able and willing to do this it's relatively easier to get admission into schools
I see
You could always mail the schools after obtaining admission saying that you cant afford it lmao
It's what Im doing rn
It would be very cheap for me if i got accepted into unis near Boston because i got relatives there
Could live with them or something
oh and NEU's apparently like a "rich kid school" and has grade inflation
Still ranked #80+ cs worldwide
damn i might get terminated for what im saying here
NEU's #34 right
Correct
You could try both I guess. I know a guy who ED1'd BU, didn't get in and ED2'd NEU and got in
He had also applied EA to UMass
Lol
Determined af on Boston so
1 nov
Okay, seems good
Me too
haha yeah go for something similar then ig
harvard, boston university, boston college, NEU, MIT, Babson, UMass Amherst, Tufts, Wellesley,
Damn they've got a lot
Yea
if you are willing to go to the Midwest, Kettering University has good cyber security and AI concentrations for the CS major. It is very prestigious in the Automotive and Manufacturing industries. 2 years of full time paid internship experience is baked into the 4 year CS degree. It could be a good safety.
Should also be fairly cheap after merit scholarships and co-op income
Hmm, il look into it.
.
?
Just bumping since i need more suggestions lol
Oh haha
I'll be very honest: that 80% and 79% is gonna get u massacred.... almost everyone at these schools for CS has 95+ in all years of high school (yes, even those schools with grade deflation)
Yeah but what options do i have sir
I'm going to project 95%+ for 12th
What do you recommend?
Throw in as many publics as you can
Rutgers, UMass amherst, Penn state, Virginia Tech as safeties, Purdue, UMD, UW Madison, etc would be (hard) targets. GT, UIUC, UDub, UMich, Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD as reaches
Pretty much gold standard for CS... if u get into one of the reaches, faang recruiters will have an orgasm... The love when they see u have UIUC/Mich/GT/Cal etc on your resume
@nocturne marlin i just read about double majors. What do you think about applying to easier to get into courses like Information Systems in highly prestegious colleges and then double majoring in computer science so i can still show it on my resume after graduation and still have all the knowledge and classes?
- most publics do not allow double major
- CS is capped. You cannot backdoor
if u do not apply CS, you CANNOT take a major in CS
typical admissions strategy at cmu: apply and get into IS, then transfer to CS
you can choose any major within school of cs
but all majors within scs are equally competitive
My friends at CMU say it's easier to get into IS than CS at CMU.
yeah its easier to get into IS, but there's very tough GPA reqs for people looking to transfer into SCS
also it's only easier to get into IS right now because they recently tripled the class size...the acc rate will go back down (to 7 percent iirc) over the next few years as the program grows
SCS just takes you undeclared and then you can declare any CS major sophomore year
