that makes sense i see
posting for @steep fog Harvey Mudd vs UMich!! I just got rejected from WASP yesterday and I'm not really confident in my other schools, so I'm just trying to find what school would probably suit me better.
Schools: Harvey Mudd (CS/Math) and UMich (Ross)
Intended Major: For HMC, it would me CS/Math. For UMich, it would be business. It's more like quant finance vs finance for me.
Similarities: Literally like nothing, they are polar opposite schools in terms of vibe, size, and weather. Other than maybe the fact that they are both great schools for STEM.
University of Michigan Ross:
Pros:
- Fantastic business school that are targets for both consulting and finance.
- 2 hour flight from where I live (NYC).
- I can double major in engineering if I would like
- I get a free macbook air if I attend
- I got a full ride as OOS
- Ann Arbor is a fantastic place.
- Alumni. Need I say more?
Cons:
-
I don't believe I can double major in CS and Business since I didn't get into CS advanced selection (I didn't even apply).
-
It's a bit too big for my liking.
-
Very big greek life and I feel like I won't be able to do that well in recruiting if I don't join clubs and frats.
-
I've never done CS before, and I think it might hold me back if I start in college (Ik many people start extremely early)
Harvey Mudd
Pros:
- Fantastic school for STEM (probably better than UMich)
- Smaller and near a bunch of other fantastic LACs.
- I think I can double major in economics (from what I've heard) at CMC, correct me if I'm wrong.
- Tech recruiters recruit from HMC on campus.
- Fantastic undergrad education.
- Much better if I'd like to pursue a grad school.
- Second highest college in starting and mid career pay
Cons:
- Really far away from home.
- Not sure about financial aid yet (I'm FGLI and I need a ton of aid)
- Course rigor is pretty hard, just like every other STEM school.
- I'm not sure how HMC does in quant finance in NYC, and I'm also not sure if I'm even smart enough to do quant.
thank you
idt mich does well in quant either but idk on this one
faslk;df I love both schools but I really dk which one suits me more ๐ญ
From the way you described these schools, you alr leaning toward umich, close to home and full ride? (That checks off pretty much everything and you can doublemajor in stuff you like)
Also free macbook ๐
@steep fog fwiw i would choose mich too
wait for finaid tho
dont have to choose until that cmoes out
haha i do get a full ride but the thing is that i might also get a LOT of aid from HMC
both schools appeal a lot to me, the thing im worried about is that UMich might be considered a target school, but it also requires a lot of networking as well as joining frats/clubs which are going to be hard for someone like me, since I don't have any connections nor am I that partial to joining frats
Is your UMich full ride all grants and scholarships or does it include loans and work study?
hmc gives me a small community that branches out to 4 other great schools, and theres not rly a sense of frats and companies that recruit on campus dont exclusively recruit out of frats
grants + scholarships
also if i am not able to make it into quant, HMC makes it easy for me to go into the regular paths of CS majors or go into grad school for engineering, MBA's, and maybe even law school or med school if i decide for it in undergrad
Then go with UMich. I have friends there. There is no pressure to join greek life.
Harvey Mudd also meets demonstrated need but they include work study and loans. Cheaper is better. You will be able to find a community at both. Unless you truly LOVE HMC and couldnโt live four years with out, then go there.
oooh i see i see, thank you
Youโre overthinking the greek life.
yea its just from what ive seen online, a lot of ib/consulting companies that recruit from ross recruit directly from certain clubs, so im just a bit put off by that
To be fair, a lot of schools are like that. Especially at state schools. Itโs not uncommon. But thatโs also not to say you canโt get recruited if youโre not apart of one.
Itโs just alumni networks. Some clubs have alumni that want to recruit from there. Some recruit from the whole department. Some from the whole school.
At the end of the day, go with youโre heart and make a financially feasible choice. OOS, I would most definitely choose the UMich full ride! That is HARD to come by.
hahah thank you!! I was rly surprised abt the fin aid they gave me even before the scholarships, but thanks for the input!!
I'll still have to see about my other schools (though not rly confident once i got rejected from all of WASP) and seeing my financial aid package from HMC
hmc has somewhat unreliable financial aid unfortunately
I would go with umich ross because it's more prestigious in the finance world, and also you get a guaranteed full ride (no stressing on whether aid is approved the next year)
HAHAH well its not necessarily guaranteed, around half is scholarships half are grants, but as long as my financial status doesnt change my grants shouldnt change
umich also only requires fafsa to renew, while hmc requires both fafsa and css (and i have to also submit noncustodial)
oh ok, is it mostly made up of like fin aid or merit aid?
i got like half in scholarships (i think one of them is merit and one is need based) and i got half in need based grants, and then pell grant
the only thing left to pay are the indirect expenses, but tuition and room/board are covered
that's pretty good actually, for a state school. I know the UCs even only offer aid to in state
I would still go with UMich, if they have a good track record for offering aid to all, as they have more financial resources
yep and im OOS too, so im really surprised'
not to mention how Ross is a target in the finance world
yup definitely
im just really put off about how big umich is as a whole, though i really love the school and im visiting it next week (they are actually flying me out which is super cool ๐ญ )
that's really generous of them to include a trip lol
the thing is i also really like HMC, when i first found out about it i researched so much, and i loved writing their supplements and i really could see myself there
I was put off applying to HMC because of the stress culture actually, I read their GPAs are so low they have a disclaimer at the bottom explaining why
though I like the nerdy environment
along with the fact that im really indecisive, i find HMC being a bit better for me in that aspect because they allow me to explroe the different fields in engineering and other parts of STEM, while having a good reputation when it comes to getting into graduate programs (and CMC is right there too if id want to get into econ)
yes i definitely heard about that too, which also makes me kinda scared
but i already come from a pretty stressful place ๐ญ the thing is if i want to continue being in a more academically inclined environment or a more socially networked and "fun with others" type environment
umich also has a ton of nerdy people
it's not all frat parties and such
but the admission counselor when I visited HMC told me how there was essentially 0 greek life there
thats true!! (i would consider myself a bit of a nerd), but its also very sociable, with a lot of greek life, football, and clubs. its a huge school with a lot of opportunities and a really good urban area
tbh it honestly comes down to what fits me the best, i gotta go visit both of them soon :')
but thank you for ur suggestions!!
@steep fog if you do CS, harvey mudd is INSANE
so it depends on your career preference
haha thank you!!
but do yk how well hmc does in quant roles? i looked on their websites and ik that some companies like jane street hire from hmc, but idk to what extent
for that id say mich is more well known, but you gotta remember it's an LAC
meaning you get a LOT more resources dedicated to you
and attention
so it depends on what kind of uni you wanna go
yea thats true, both are complete opposite schools
congrats tho! both really awesome schools
me personally would choose HMU
but it has a pretty dedicated cs culture
so certainly not easy
