#uiuc (cs + linguistics) vs. purdue (cs)

Also to reiterate overall, UIUC is undoubtedly better, but the difference isn't sky and ground.
The idea that CS + x is less prestigious is false
In fact half my friends in CS+x have freshmen internships
And recruiters think we are double majoring
I personally like uiuc better because it's more urban than Purdue
And because our CS connections are definitely crazy
And CS + ling is one of the hottest majors here
Cuz NLP and AI
You also have access to basically all the Grainger CS resources
Same priority for classes
And also better priority for classes in linguistics
And you basically do the same thing as Grainger CS because you take the same core courses
It's just you aren't required to take as many CS electives
But hey you could finish up the whole Grainger CS degree too
Or take more linguistics courses
It's a choose your own adventure type deal
CS + X is not less prestigious
so that is false
UIUC is way more prestigious than Purdue at the moment but like you said they are both amazing schools
I think you should lean towareds UIUC here but take my advice w/ a grain of salt
I highly doubt this characterization
CS+X, regardless of how it is looked at compared to CS, would still be higher than Purdue prestige wise
how about uiuc cs+x versus GT CS
fwiw i ended up choosing gt cs over uiuc cs + ling after getting in rd
Fantastic! What were your reasons choosing gt over uiuc?
here were my deciding factors!
- the weather. I've lived in the northeast my whole life and i'm sick of the cold lol so georgia weather was super appealing to me (esp compared to illinois)
- location. Atl is such a lively city and there's sm to do. I know uiuc has a great college town but it's also 2 hours away from chicago and is surrounded by cornfields. This is a pretty personal factor but for me i 100% preferred atlanta, though ik some people would prefer uiuc's location
- party culture. There's a pretty strong party culture at uiuc and ik you don't have to be part of it, but i wasn't really that drawn to it. At gt i've heard that there are parties so i could still do that if i wanted to, but it's not as strong as uiuc's culture. This could be a pro/con depending on what u want
- more stem ppl at gt. Again this could be a pro/con but personally i kinda want to be around more stem people. Uiuc is more well-rounded so if you like that, then this could be a con of gt
- gender ratio (this is a con for gt but oh well). The ratio at uiuc is better lol but i'll survive
- cs vs. cs + x. I know cs + x is still a cs degree but i feel like i would end up getting impostor syndrome at uiuc. This is definitely a personal thing though and it probably isn't something that everyone would be affected by
- gt has some more overall prestige (ik this is a toxic mindset but it was still a factor for me 😭 )
- gt is cheaper than uiuc (i'm oos for both)
- gt has really good study abroad opportunities where u pay in-state tuition
if you're really torn between the two, you should definitely try visiting the campuses!
i visited gt's campus and fell in love, so that + the above factors ultimately helped me decide that it was the right place for me
Well-summarized. Thanks @topaz coyote
