Schools: UT Dallas vs FSU
Intended major: CS
Similarities: None, which is why I don't know which one is better
UT Dallas
Pros:
- Commuter school, so academics is really great
- A strong stem school, and CS department is decent (#63 in USNews). Research in this field is also good
- Dallas is great for job/internship opportunities
- Assuming that I get the AES scholarship, I'll only have to pay around $15,000 per year (around $8,000 cheaper than FSU)
Cons:
- Commuter school, so social life might be kind of dead (depending how "dead" it is, it might or might not be something I mind)
- Overall ranking is quite low (#151, but I'm not sure whether I should be concerned about this? Since overall ranking depends on all majors, and UT Dallas honestly isn't good at all for non-stem majors)
FSU
Pros:
- Overall ranking is high (#55 on USNews)
- Good social life/party scene
Cons:
- Social life/party scene MIGHT be too much
- CS ranking is low (#82), since FSU is more of an arts school
- FSU's location isn't exactly ideal for CS internship
- Assuming I get FSU's OOS tuition fee waiver (which relies entirely on a student's academics), it'll be $8,000 more expensive than UT Dallas
Tiebreaking considerations:
- How much does overall ranking truly matter? Since #151 and #55 is quite a big difference.
- How dead UT Dallas' social life really is? My high school is probably the most commuter school in the entire country (Oh, Asia...), people just come and go, and I honestly don't enjoy it that much, so if UT Dallas is where people do nothing but study, I'm not sure if I want to go there.
